Vajdahunyad Castle is a picturesque attraction nestled in Budapest's City Park (Városliget). Originally built in 1896 for Hungary's millennial festivities, the architecturally diverse complex includes the city's agricultural museum inside the palace. The district has a harrowing past, as the site of the Jewish Ghetto during the city’s Nazi occupation, and it’s dotted with monuments and memorials. But in recent years, it’s also undergone regeneration, emerging as one of Budapest’s coolest quarters, full of cozy cafés, gastropubs, kosher restaurants, and live music venues.

In a city full of bathhouses, Budapest’s medieval Rudas Thermal Baths (Rudas Gyógyfürdo are among the most popular. Established as early as the 16th century at the foot of Gellert Hill, the traditional Turkish bathhouse features a swimming pool, six therapy pools, a sauna, and a rooftop Jacuzzi, plus massages and other spa services.

Visitors who want to explore Hungarian history’s darker side can head to Budapest's House of Terror Museum (Terror Háza Múzeum). Located in a building that was once used as the headquarters of the Arrow Cross Party and the secret police, the museum offers a look at life under fascist and Stalinist rule.

Castle Hill (Várhegy) is the medieval heart of Budapest and the centerpiece of the Buda neighborhood. The Moorish Revival Rumbach Street Synagogue was built in 1872, when District VII was a bustling Jewish quarter. Known for its Islamic detailing, domed interior, and colorful brickwork, this recently-restored space offers a window into 19th-century Jewish history. It's a fitting stop on a tour of the area's hip ruin bars and restaurants.

Located at the end of a bustling shopping area on Vaci Street, Vörösmarty Square (Vörösmarty ter is a vibrant public space surrounded by high-end shops, and known for its annual Christmas Market. Stop by for an ice cream at a local favorite, Gerbeaud Café, or hop on the metro inside the square and head for historic sights up Andrássy Avenue.

Budapest’s principal shopping street, Váci Street (Váci Utca) runs for almost a mile, right through the heart of Pest.
