The tour covers much of what the area has to offer. Three large Kiwis in nocturnal enclosures, Maori carving while you watch, and a volcanic field with bubbling mud, geysers, and hot surfaces to let you know the heat is right under your feet. Our guide was a very educated and informative Maori who gave us many insights into tribal culture.

Really appreciate you sharing this, sounds like you got to experience a bit of everything which is exactly what we hope for. From seeing the kiwi up close in their nocturnal homes to spending time at the New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute watching carving being brought to life, it’s a pretty special mix aye.
It's awesome to hear your guide made the experience even better too. Having someone who can share those deeper stories and perspectives of te ao Māori (the Māori world) really brings the whole place to life in a different way.
Ngā mihi nui (big thanks) again for visiting and for taking the time to leave a review.

Really interesting experience with a lot of variety of things to see. We loved seeing the kiwis in the kiwi house.
The group was a little large and it was sometimes difficult to see what the guide was talking about however you were able to wander around after the tour had finished.

thanks for sharing this, we're glad to hear you enjoyed the experience and got to see our kiwi up close in the kiwi house, that’s always a highlight for a lot of people
really appreciate the note about the group size too, we understand it can make it a bit harder to catch everything the guide is pointing out. good to hear you still made the most of it by exploring more of the site in your own time after the tour
ngā mihi (thank you) again for visiting and for the feedback, it helps us a lot

Interesting visit although our tour only lasted for an hour instead of the advertised 90 minutes. We booked a time slot for late afternoon and unfortunately the kiwis had all gone to bed. However we witnessed the geyser erupting which was fantastic.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed seeing the geyser erupt, it’s always an impressive moment and a highlight for many visitors.
We’re sorry your tour didn’t run for the full 90 minutes as advertised. That’s not what we want for anyone, and we appreciate you letting us know. We also understand it’s disappointing when the kiwi are already asleep during the later sessions, as they can be tricky to spot depending on the time of day.
Ngā mihi for visiting and for the feedback, it helps us improve the experience here at Te Puia and the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute.

Our guide did a great job explaining the cultural center and Maori history. We saw kiwis in an enclosed space and we saw the mud pools and geysers. We'll worth your time to learn about this center.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. We're thrilled to hear you enjoyed learning about the New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute and exploring the mud pools, geysers, and seeing the kiwis. It's great to know our kaiārahi (guide) helped make the visit special for you.

The guide walked ahead of the group. No microphone so you could not hear her but I don't think she was speaking anyway. She was asked a few questions and appeared to have minimal knowledge. We were told that we would miss the hourly eruptions by 5 minutes and we could wait at the end of the tour for an hour and go back to watch the main event of the tour on our own. We skipped the end of the tour and waited for the eruptions on our own. It was spectacular. If we had gone back at the time given we would have missed the erruptions by 10 minutes. Worst tour ever but only way to see the guiser eruptions. $170 aud for our own self tour!

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We’re really sorry to hear about the issues you had with the guided tour. That’s certainly not the standard we aim for, especially around clear communication, engagement, and ensuring our guides are informative and easy to hear. To help us follow this up properly with our team, we wanted to ask if you happen to remember the guide’s name or if you may have a photo from your visit that includes them. This would really help us look into the matter more accurately. Your comments about the pacing, guidance around the geyser eruption timings are concerning, and we will be passing this feedback on to the wider team to look into.
We’re glad to hear that you were still able to witness the geyser eruptions, as they truly are a special and powerful part of Te Puia. However, we understand your frustration and disappointment, particularly given the cost and your expectations of a guided experience. Feedback like this is important for us to reflect on how we can improve the experience for future manuhiri (visitors).
Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with us.

Te Puia is a renowned cultural and geothermal experience in Rotorua, New Zealand. It is home to the famous Pohutu Geyser, bubbling mud pools, and steaming hot springs that showcase the region’s volcanic power. Visitors can also engage deeply with Māori culture through guided tours, traditional carving and weaving schools, performances, and a hāngī-style meal. The experience blends natural wonder with living indigenous heritage, offering insight into history, art, language, and spiritual connections to the land.

It’s great to hear you also appreciated the New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute and the chance to see the cultural performance, as these are at the heart of sharing Māori heritage. We hope the hāngī buffet added a special touch to your visit and gave a taste of our traditions.

Tours seem to be only as good as your allocated guide. We had a youngster who was only just trained. We overheard others who were really engaging and much more knowledgeable. You can stay and view the entire site after the tour and there is so much more to see that they don’t mention.
Response from Host, Jan 2026

Thanks for sharing your experience. Sorry your guide was still learning the ropes. Some of our guides bring their own wow factor in correspondence of their experience here, so tours can feel a bit different depending on who you get. It’s great you got to stay and view the entre site however, there is still more you get to see outside of the guided experience.

The place itself is very cool and worth seeing. Loved seeing the kiwis but wished we’d had more time. Had about 20 people in our group so kept us moving past the windows. Gave 3 stars because our guide was either very new, a fill in or just not into it. She essentially told us what we could read on the signage. Heard other guides who were much more animated and provided more detailed info. She encouraged questions but you don’t know what you don’t know which makes it hard to form a question. Would have enjoyed more information on the Māori people and culture. She was really sweet which makes it hard for me to criticize. We ended up going back around to read more. Would be nice to somehow add in a mini Māori performance at scheduled times. Didn’t want the fully immersive meal/performance. Just a “taste” of the culture would be great. Cool site though.

Thank you for taking the time to share such thoughtful feedback. We’re really glad you enjoyed the site, the geothermal valley and getting to see the kiwi, they’re pretty special and we understand how limited time viewing at the kiwi enclosure can feel when groups are moving through.
We appreciate your honesty around the guiding experience. It’s always helpful for us to hear where things didn’t quite hit the mark, especially when it comes to storytelling and sharing our Māori culture with manuhiri (visitors). If you’re comfortable, it would be really helpful if you could let us know the name of the guide or send through an image of her, as this helps us follow up with the correct person and provide the right support.
It’s also great to hear your thoughts around wanting a lighter “taste” of culture. We do offer the option to add a cultural performance onto your guided experience without needing to do the full meal and evening package, though this can be subject to availability on the day.
Thanks again for your kind and balanced comments, and we’re glad you still found the visit worthwhile overall.

Really appreciate you sharing this. Sounds like an awesome visit, and we're so happy you got to experience four of our valleys' geysers going off. We're really glad to hear Rebecca looked after you and made the tour interesting with her kōrero (stories).
Thanks again for coming through and spending some time with us here at Te Puia.
Kia pai te rā (have a nice day).

Informative but moved too quickly through the sites. I could have gone through at my own pace for much less money. The highlight of the experience was the gift shop which has thousands of really lovely, locally made, handcrafted artifacts and gifts for a very reasonable price.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with us. We're glad to hear you enjoyed the Oha Store (gift shop) and the beautiful locally made taonga (treasures).
We’re sorry to hear the tour felt a bit rushed for you. We try to keep things flowing while still giving everyone a good understanding of the valley and our cultural spaces, but we know pacing can feel different for each person. Your feedback helps us look at how we can make the experience more relaxed and enjoyable for everyone.
We appreciate you taking the time to let us know how your visit went.

I choose this experience as it was guided and my only opportunity to learn about Maori culture. Overall, I found the information 'light on' and could of done the same with a map. I did the 3pm session.
Lesley_W, Sep 2025
The geysers and hot mud pools are the main event but the tour guide left us to wander in this area on our own. The focus of the guided tour is on the educational work being done. (Which is great to see). I would still recommend this tour, but think the guided visit could be improved. It was also great to see the Kiwi enclosure.
Panda_A, Aug 2025
Spectacular experience. Pohutu eruption is a wonderful experience. Reminded me of Hish School Geography. Better to see individually.
Francisco_N, Jul 2025
Visiting Te Puia in July was a terrific experience. We were able to see a Kiwi up and about looking for worms, an active geyser, and walk through the Māori Arts and Crafts institute. This was a great tour to start my time in Rotorua.
Lara_K, Jun 2025
This is an absolutely amazing, must do! I would highly recommend and spend the extra time to just hang around and enjoy watching the mud pools bubble and the geysers play. The tour guide was friendly and informative. Even the cafe was delicious.
Robert_B, May 2025
As there were a few options in the area for hot springs, I decided to choose this one as it had the cultural experience and I am glad that I did. Our guide, the area and the school were all great to see and hear.
Jessica_B, Apr 2025
Definitely go to Te Puia, accessible by tour, car or public bus. The mud pools and geysers are quite astounding and the kiwi centre is just beautiful. the guides are really interesting and helpful and show how people can live authentically.
Hao_Z, Apr 2025
It is interesting to learn Mori culture and seeing Kiwi bird.
The main geyser didn't erupt when we were there that is disappointed. If I knew no guarantee to see it I would not go since the ticket is expensive. Self guided tour is better for this place.
Nicola_H, Mar 2025
Te Puia was a great day out and well worth the money paid. We saw Kiwis up close and the geyser turned up on time while we were there. Our guide was very knowledgeable and had many stories to tell.
James_P, Mar 2025
Interesting, educational walk through with a guide. Definitely worth the trip! We got to see a greeting ceremony and watch local artists carving.
CraigB, Mar 2025
I felt the important geothermal fields we were rushed thru and the guide was somewhat pretentious. The tour was not worth the money or time. I recommend the Waimangu tour
Dianne_J, Feb 2025
On the tour’s website it is not specified the distance from the city to the site of the tour. We disembarked from a cruise ship believing the pickup was close by but when we checked the pickup was more than an hour away. It would have cost us $200 one way fare. We contacted the tour company explained that their information was incomplete and we couldn’t travel that distance, requesting our fare reimbursed of $102.00. We have been a repeat customer of Viator for a few years and have never had an issues with our various tours until now.
Jeff_S, Jan 2025
Great and interesting place to learn about culture, traditions. See some geisers, visit work shops. Recommend
Sally_H, Jan 2025
Loved the personal touches and local guide. It was great to be able to stay longer after the tour to revisit points of interest.
