Fabulous, exciting, exceptional trip!
This is a wonderfully run and well conducted trip but be prepared to need to be flexible as its weather dependent and safety first! we went two hours earlier than booked because the weather was closing in and we thought it was going to be cancelled. So glad we got airborne as the flight was stunning and the landing on the volcano, not to mention the views! were other worldly :) Thoroughly recommend. Probably best to book early in your visit so allowing time to reschedule if necessary.

Really good walking tour
Really good walking tour which takes you up to the top of the crater, around the rim and back. It is a tricky climb, and even harder descent, in places but the guide is very friendly and will help you if you struggle. The terrain is very loose volcanic rock underfoot so good walking shoes are a minimum. Note, it took us about 50 minutes to get to the start of the walk, on a very rickety bus, over some very potholed (off) roads. So the walk itself was only about about 2hrs of the whole trip.

Loved it
This was a fun experience for sure! The duck tour was fun and we even learned a lot! We had a new guide who was training (with a veteran accompanying her) so we hit the jackpot! They were both caring and helpful.

Mt. Tarawera
  • Mt. Tarawera is ideal for nature and outdoor enthusiasts.

  • Tarawera’s peak is privately owned and has been off-limits to independent hikers, cyclists, and general visitors since early 2010.

  • The entrance fee for Lake Rotomahana and the Waimangu Volcanic Valley supports this extremely rare and protected ecosystem.

  • Obtain a required access permit for Tarawera Falls or Tarawera Outlet at Maori Investments Limited in Kawerau, or on weekends at the Kawerau i-Site Visitor Centre.

  • Because much of the Tarawera area is rugged forest, make sure to wear sturdy footwear and appropriate clothing.
