This experience was one of the highlights of my trip. An overall amazing day. They picked us up from our resort and we thought we’d be there for the hour of the class and ended up staying for the whole afternoon. We did a rum tasting experience as well which was a nice break from the watered down drinks at the resort. The staff were so friendly and recommended Doña Pula to eat where the locals eat. It didn’t disappoint! I 1000% recommend this if these kinds of experiences are up your alley. They’re very knowledgeable about all of the experiences they offer. And we had such a fun time. We even met new friends.

We were unable to attend because our flight was delayed. They refunded our money immediately no questions asked. Gracious, responsive and respectful.

    Entertaining, educational ánd delicious.

Nice store, prices don't always make sense though. You're given time before and after the workshop to shop around. The workshop itself, given in my case by Rudy, is fun and engaging, as well as delicious. You go home with some great chocolate and learn quite a bit about the origin, history ánd making of chocolate.

    Response from Host, Mar 2026

Thank you very much for your review. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed the chocolate workshop with Rudy and that you found it both fun and informative. We appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you again soon for another delicious experience.

My friends and I really enjoyed the class. You could tell the instructor, Rudy, really enjoyed leading the session. We learned about the process of making chocolate, got to taste different chocolates and learn the differences between the % of chocolate, and finally, made a chocolate bar plus chocolate bomb (for hot chocolate). The store was beautiful and had a bunch of stuff to buy (from rums to chocolates to teas to other gifts). Would highly recommend this class.

    Great experience

Great class. Great store. Great people!

    Bob_K, Oct 2025
Our class had 5 people in it (our group of 3 and another couple). Ages ranged from 15 to just over 50. Everyone in our group of 3 were very happy with the class and all said that we would recommend it in a heartbeat. I'm also very confident that the other couple enjoyed themselves and would recommend this, although I didn't specifically ask them. The class was a brief history of chocolate followed by a more in depth hands on that included making chocolate bars and chocolate balls for hot chocolate. Instructor was very knowledgeable, friendly, and easy to understand. He was also able to help with questions about local coffee when we were shopping in the associated store. We were very pleased. The store was clean and well stocked. Prices were generally much better than the the resort, although a few items were the same price. Much bigger variety of items than we has at the resort, and items generally seemed to be much higher quality. The staff was friendly and helpful. One person (store owner would be my guess) also checked up on us to make sure transportation had been smooth and we were well taken care of. While I'm sure it was a good business practice, I'm convinced he genuinely cared that we were happy. For reference my wife says tend to be fairly cynical (I prefer the term "realistic") so that's about as high of praise as I can give LOL. Transportation to and from the class were in clean, air conditioned vehicles with good drivers. If I would have paid attention to who they drove for I would not hesitate to recommend them as well, but this was not my first event of the day and I admit I was a bit exhausted and didn't take the time to look.

    Response from Host, Dec 2025

Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review. It’s wonderful to know that the instructor’s knowledge, friendliness, and clear explanations helped make the experience memorable, both during the workshop and while assisting with your questions in the store. We’re also very pleased that you found our shop clean, well-stocked, and offering better variety and quality than the resort. Our team always strives to provide excellent service, so your comments about their genuine care mean a lot to us. It’s great to hear that your transportation was smooth and comfortable as well. We appreciate your trust and your kind words—they truly motivate us. We would be thrilled to welcome you back whenever you return to the Dominican Republic!

The experience was something unique and different. Experiencing the local chocolate masters explain and show us how it works was something special. We enjoyed it very much.

    A Sweet, Hands-On Chocolate Adventure

    Krystal_C, Aug 2025
We had such a great experience! Not only did we learn all about chocolate, but we also got to create our own chocolate bars and chocolate balls. The chocolate balls were perfect for adding to my protein shakes when I got home, and the bars made the best snack for my 4-hour ride back to New York. Our instructor (Saturday, August 9th) was amazing—fluent in English, Spanish, and French, full of energy, and such a joy to learn from (sorry I forgot your name, my dear!). You’ll be in for a treat! The shop itself is beautiful and the perfect place to stock up on souvenirs. This experience will definitely leave a good taste in your mouth!

    Fabulous and wonderful

Interesting topic and informative. Interactive, like chocolate work. Just one phrase about Olmec wish it were more. Cacao purchases at the end are great. Wish I could buy their cacao products online. But I did leave with my own hand made chocolate candy bar.

    Response from Host, May 2025

Thank you so much for your thoughtful feedback! We're glad you found the topic engaging and enjoyed the interactive elements, especially the chocolate-making experience. We appreciate your interest in the Olmec history—it's such a rich story, and we’ll definitely look at expanding that part. We're also happy to hear you loved the handmade chocolate bar! We’re working on making our cacao products available online, so stay tuned!

Wish we had a little bit more

    Nicole_m, Jun 2024
Honestly my son and I enjoyed it but I didn’t think there was enough. First we got picked up at 130 and I thought that it was supposed to start at 130 (apparently times are approximate) so we got there late because the guide already had started and they ended up having to repeat for us when we got there. So anyways the place you do the class in is absolutely beautiful we made the cacao balls and bark. Which was fun and messy and delicious. I have a picture at 2:13 pm the start and we were done with it all by 2:32 based off the picture I took of the chocolate in it’s mold… so about 20 min. Then the bark takes 20 min to set and you go shop which we did and then We came back and packaged up the chocolate and left. We spent more time waiting for the bus to take us back than we spent on making chocolate There was no “surprise contest” or “entertainment” that they list in the description and your one soft drink was water. Staff was friendly and the gift shop was cool and worth looking around. Like I said I wish we would have gotten to make more, maybe white chocolate and/or milk chocolate.

    Response from Host, Jul 2024

We apologize for any confusion regarding the start time and the overall duration of the class. We strive to make our sessions as enjoyable and fulfilling as possible, and we’re sorry to hear that the experience felt too brief for you. We appreciate your suggestion about offering the opportunity to make more types of chocolate, such as white or milk chocolate, and will take this into consideration for future improvements. Regarding the “surprise contest” and “entertainment” mentioned in the description, we regret any miscommunication and will review the accuracy of our promotional materials. Thank you for visiting our gift shop and for your honest review. Your feedback is valuable to us as we work to enhance our offerings. We hope to see you again and provide an even better experience next time.

Amazing way to spend an afternoon!

    Great chocolate class

It was very informative and my hubby and I really enjoyed the class. It doesn’t hurt that you leave with what you created which is nice. If you want a short activity but interesting one, I recommend it.

The type of sweeth tooth you want

this was my second time taking a class. My first class was around Christmas and we prepared fish. The chocolate experience was nice. We made chocolate balls that were able to use for hot chocolate and we were able to make chocolate candy. I enjoyed my time and the class was fun.

    WHO DOESN'T LOVE CHOCOLATE!!

    TRACY_C, Feb 2024
The class was something different for an excursion. Was really hard to hear the guy talking. The guy talked way to much and didn't concentrate on all the couples. Two couples had to have the chocolate reheated to be able to make the chocolate bars. The class lists for an hour but we were there several. They have a mini market on site so plan to do a bit of shopping before or after the class.

    Great taste!

    Johanna_S, Dec 2023
The taste of the cacao nibs and the taste of chocolate! Unique and very strong. Memorable and great fellings!

Thank you Rudy for a great experience! Try the Chocolate wine!!! It is so good!!!

This is a must do activity!

    Sharita_W, Nov 2023
We loved learning about the chocolate making process and my kids really enjoyed being hands on with the chocolate making!

    Chocolatey fun

    Shehryar_S, Nov 2023
This was one of our favorite experiences on this trip! The class is intimate (we had 8 people in our class), fun, and informative. You make cacao balls for hot chocolate and 8 chocolate bars to keep, and learn how to temper chocolate to make them. Highly recommend!!

    3 chocolate loving sisters

    Darleen_G, Oct 2023
We were a group of 3 sisters in our 50’s. We truly loved this experience! The chocolate we made together is delicious. We had gone through a class about chocolate on Kauai last year, but this was our first time to actually make chocolate. It was a little challenging and used a good amount of upper body strength to crush the cacao beans and then manually grind them. Then tempering the chocolate required more use of the upper body, but we managed to get it all done. It was really rewarding to make the raw chocolate balls that will become hot cocoa; and to pour the chocolate into molds and then pop out the delectable chocolate bars. Felt a bit like Lucy Ricardo in the chef’s hat, but in a fun way. This was one of, if not the most favorite activity we did while in the DR.

    Great time!

    Rebrown2010, Jul 2023
We had a great time! Felix taught us about the history of chocolate first with some opportunities to taste then we went to the back kitchen to make chocolate bars and candies. Overall enjoyed ourselves! The gift shop is nice as well

    Absolutely fabulous family experience!!

    Diana_V, Jul 2023
This was absolutely fantastic!!! It was myself, husband and two kids (9 and 11). We also had another couple in our group. Picked up right from the hotel in an air conditioned bus and driven the 20 minutes or so to Taino. They picked us up at 2pm for a 3:30 tour which seemed really early but that's literally my only complaint. As soon as we got there Wendell gave us a little presentation of cacao and then we sampled different chocolate (white, milk, 60%, 70%, 85%, 100%). That was really interesting - the 100% is very bitter (no sugar!). They offered us some hot chocolate too. (Which is funny considering it was 100° outside). Then we walked around the shop for awhile until our time started. It is a great shop with souvenirs, chocolates, alcohol, art, and a lot representing the indigenous people. Well priced too which was nice to see. And they were NOT pushy at all. The store was a little warm but we were able to handle it. Then Anthony came and got us for the actual chocolate making. He was the best!!! (And so was the second Anthony in there who helped us too). Extremely attentive to the kids but made sure everyone felt included. There were 4 stations to make chocolate so we split into groups of 2 and used 3 of the stations. Lots of steps involved and he walked us through them all and it was so much fun. In the end each station took home 2 large platters of chocolate with different toppings. We learned all about the process (getting the beans, instruments needed, right temperatures, etc) and had fun. The actual class was from 3:30-4:45. Then we walked around the store for another 20 minutes while the chocolate hardened and then were driven back to the hotel. We got back to the hotel around 5:45. I think the description said the class was an hour but from pick up (a little after 2pm) to drop off (545pm) it was more like 3.5 hours. So plan accordingly. I really wish they offered this more than just Saturdays because so many people would love this. Minimal driving and perfect for kids or those who don't want high adrenaline activities.
