This is our family’s first visit to Portugal and we have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. We considered taking a group bus tour to see the Douro Valley, but decided to book a private tour instead. We took a train from Porto to Pinhão, where we met our guide, Guilherme. Before we arrived, he let us know what he’d be wearing so we could find him easily at the crowded train stop. As soon as we hopped off the train at Pinhão, Guilherme was there with a friendly smile on his face, and offered bottled waters to our family as we got to his 4x4. From this point on, I’ll go ahead and say that this tour with Guilherme was my favorite part of our entire trip to Portugal. We started with a boat ride along a section of the Douro River (the only part of the trip that was shared with a larger group). Guilherme pointed out so many interesting things along the boat ride, as well as answering all of my countless questions. Guilherme speaks and understands English very well (better than anyone else I met in Portugal). We then began our trek in the 4x4, climbing up the hills to an AMAZING lunch at a private winery. After a tour of the winery, we were served a beautiful Portuguese meal with a selection of their wine (which was incredible). Guilherme then took us to another winery for a tour and tasting—Adega Cooperativa de Favaios. Our tour guide, Mia, was very friendly and knowledgeable and we loved the sampling of their award-winning Moscatel. The rest of the tour consisted of a beautiful drive through the hills above the Douro, stopping frequently for family pictures (Guilherme offered many, including many times to stop the car for us to take as many pictures as we wanted). He took us off-roading for a while (our teenage kids really loved this part) before we had to make our way down to the train station for our return trip to Porto. I can’t sing Guilherme’s praises enough. He immediately made us feel like we were friends/family, took care of us for the entire trip, and shared so much of his knowledge of this beautiful part of Portugal. Guilherme has roots here in Vila Real District, and his love for his family and this breathtakingly-beautiful land was apparent (and relatable to anybody who loves their home). I highly recommend taking this tour (especially with Guilherme)! It was an unforgettable experience for my family. I don’t know that I’ve ever felt such a visceral connection to the “soul” of a place, and I can attribute that directly to Guilherme’s tour.

This was probably the best day we had in Portugal! The off roading on narrow old streets was super fun, the scenery was gorgeous. We learned a lot about Douro, the wine, and even about Portugal itself. We tasted many wines and had delicious food. Our guide, Vasco was wonderful.
Highly recommend this tour.

This is the absolutely best way to spend a day in Douro Valley. This is my second time taking this tour and both times with Vasco and he is amazing! The sites, the stories, the food, and of course, the wine all made for an absolutely fantastic day. Well worth it, and you won’t regret it.

This was an amazing day guided by Joao & Vasco. Not for the faint hearted - but such fun! Organised & executed to perfection - we felt completely at ease during the boat trip (fab), the 4x4 travel on unmetaled tracks and a wonderful waterside Portuguese lunch in the middle of the day. The afternoon wine tour of the Cooperative was definitely best of the 3 we have done - Maria was so knowledgeable.

The 4x4 is old and the A/C barely worked (it was nearly 100 degrees F all day). The boat trip is lovely, but not private. We (3 of us) with another group with 5 +guide - so our guide and theirs were speaking at the same time ( distracting). The linchpin at Calca Curta in Foz Tua far exceeded expectations. Highly recommend their pork platter, it was the best pork preparation we had in Portugal. Wine tasting was not what we were expecting. The winery produced primarily muscatel varieties and our tasting included only 1 appertif variety and one dessert variety. If I had known this was going to be the “wine tasting “, I would not have booked this tour. We enjoyed the scenery at the viewing points. Our guide Guillerme was lovely and informative.

Regarding Land Rovers, we understand that they are the best jeeps for traveling the vineyards in comfort. We regret that the jeep had an air conditioning problem, a problem that could have been easily resolved by replacing the jeep. Regarding the wine tasting, you could have expressed your dissatisfaction to our guide, and he would have automatically offered you an upgrade to your tasting or offered an additional tasting at another winery. For us, the most important thing is that our customers are satisfied.
We apologize for the unpleasant day you had.

Grapeland Adventure and Tourism was an excellent choice for our tour of the Douro Valley! Nuno was a fantastic and well-informed guide who grew up in one of the towns we visited, which meant he was able to share a level of insight we wouldn't have gotten with a larger tour company. Great wineries, excellent lunch, and stunning views. There was a slight misunderstanding about the start time, which they went above and beyond to make up to us, but they did nothing wrong and didn't need to make up for anything! They really care about ensuring the experience goes the way you want it to. Highly recommend.

We had an absolutely outstanding tour with Nuno. The full day tour was without a doubt the best experience we had on our trip. And the stop for lunch at Calca Curta was the best meal of our 10 day trip as well! Nuno is clearly very passionate about the Douro Valley and having grown up there, has plenty of intimate stories to share. The group also made it very easy for us to get to Pinhao by giving us advice on train schedules to make it out to Douro. Highly highly recommend!

As others have mentioned, this trip with Nuno was a fantastic addition to our stay in Pinhao! The weather for our tour date was questionable, with some regions of the valley experiencing a power failure... but Nuno navigated the unusual circumstances like a true pro and gave us a fantastic tour. Exploring the small towns of the region, driving backroads through the vineyards, stopping for fantastic views, and wine tasting and enjoying a local lunch were all great experiences. Our boat trip that day was cancelled due to the weather, but Nuno arranged for us to take the trip early the next morning and it was fantastic; he also recommended a winery where we had a great tasting the next day. Be sure to make this part of your stay in Pinhao. Muito obrigado Nuno!

The Grapeland team is amazing. The sights we were driven to and the experiences we had are treasures we would not have been able to experience on our own. We believe no other tour could provide you with the scenery opportunity we were given. We drove into actual vineyards, authentic terrain only accessed through unpaved roads…and so much more. What a great way to experience Douro valley!

My husband and myself had a tour today of the Douro Valley with Nuno. He was incredibly informative about the valley, the history of it and the history of wine making here. He also explained about the growing of olives and cork trees here. We had a great visit to a winery where we had a tasting of wines and olive oil too. The age old process of making wine and olive oil were explained to us. It was both informative and enjoyable. We spent some time driving through the vineyards in the jeep off-road and certainly we could not have seen these places without a local guide. As well as the vineyards we had a gorgeous lunch in a traditional restaurant on the banks of a river, saw some amazing little villages and enjoyed a lovely boat trip to finish up with. Nuno really showed us the Douro Valley as we would never have seen it. We would highly recommend this tour.

Vasco Andre' was our amazing guide for a full day private tour of the Douro Valley, answering all our question about the region, the towns on the river and on top of the hills, the types of grapes, soils, and wines produced by each, and the people who live and work here. We started the day early at our hotel in Pinhao with a 1-hour boat tour on the Douro River and had the entire boat to ourselves! An hour later when we returned, people were lined up to board crowded boats. A couple of other highlights - we stopped to pick and taste some grapes from the vine and a local farmer stopped by and invited us to his home with a spectacular view and a swing, to taste his homemade port wine. We also stopped at a wine coop in Vasco's home village and visited a local bread bakery using ancient ovens the same way for hundreds of years. Lastly, we finished the day feeling this trip was a highlight of our first visit to Portugal and gave us a unique insider's view of the Douro Valley, its history, and its wines. We highly recommend Grapeland Tours and Viator for marketing them so well.

This is a can't miss experience in the Douro Valley. It includes so much, from the boat tour, to the 4WD experience to the visits to the lookouts, to a great local food experience and some great wine tasting on top! Nuno was a brilliant guide. Our tour was amazing! Nuno drove my wife and I around all day to the best viewpoints in the area, as well as two wineries and a boat tour in Pinhao. He was a wealth of knowledge (and spoke perfect english) and told us all about wine making in the Douro Valley and all about the region. He was also able to answer the million questions we had. The roads in the Douro are pretty crazy so there is no way we would have been able to visit half the places we went without him driving. He grew up in a little town in the valley and has been driving the roads his whole life which made us feel comfortable with the tour. We drove through a vineyard, visited many beautiful viewpoints, and then had lunch at a very small winery in a little village with a large spread of traditional portugese foods. The food was wonderful and the lunch was very relaxing in shaded patio area. The second winery was slightly larger and had a more extensive tour and another great tasting, this time with vineyard views. We HIGHLY recomend this tour. Don't think twice, just book it!

This was one of the best tours we have ever taken, and my best friend and I have traveled to many countries and have taken many tours. What made this so special was that our tour guide, Vasko, personalized everything and showed us his village, his local bakery, his favorite look out spots, his favorite restaurant….basically his Duoro Valley, through his eyes, the eyes of a local. The 4x4 portion gave us a sense of adventure as well- it was very fun! It really exceeded our expectations in every way, from the boat tour, to the delicious lunch to the off roading to seeing Vasko’s village!

Every part of this tour was excellent but especially the delicious Portuguese lunch. Our guides were extremely informative, approachable and able to answer all our questions. Only comment is wish we would have been given better directions by the guides about tipping at our lunch spot. We were somewhat at a loss as to whether to tip and felt very badly that we did not do so. Without knowing the cost of the lunch, it was also difficult to determine the amount of a tip to leave. But that was it. Everything else was perfect.

I would highly recommend this private tour! Our tour guide was Vasco, who was very friendly, easy to talk to, knowledgeable about the area (its businesses and people and culture), and a highly skilled driver (off-road as well)!
The boat sailing, the private lunch, the private tour of the Favaios Wine Factory, the off-roading, and the various viewpoints — were all well-planned activities that filled our day with uncountable memories!

This was such an amazing experience! Nunno was knowledgable and incredibly informative and entertaining. From cafe pastries to Portuguese specialties at lunch to a winery tour and tasting, we experienced the best of the Douro Valley.
