Beyond Safari: A Life-Changing Visit to Kibera with Kevin & Ismael

Theodoros_F, Feb 2026
Our visit to Kibera was one of the most powerful and eye-opening experiences my wife and I have ever had. Unlike the safari tours that focus on Kenya’s breathtaking wildlife and landscapes, this tour focused on something even more important — the people. Kibera is considered the largest informal settlement in Africa, with nearly 800,000 people living there. Before the tour even began, our amazing guide Kevin picked us up from our hotel in Nairobi. During the drive, he gave us a detailed and honest introduction to Kibera’s history, its current situation, and the many initiatives being taken to uplift the community — including projects he and his brother Ismael personally lead to support local families. From the very beginning, we felt this would be a meaningful experience. As we walked through different areas of Kibera, we witnessed the harsh reality of how people live there. The conditions are undeniably difficult. However, what touched us most was something deeper: the incredible sense of community. Despite the challenges, the bonds between people seemed stronger than ever. Everyone was kind, supportive, and respectful toward one another. There was dignity, warmth, and humanity everywhere we looked. Kevin guided us thoughtfully and respectfully, explaining daily life while ensuring we felt comfortable at all times. One of the most special moments of the tour was visiting Ismael’s home. Meeting his family was a privilege. They welcomed us with such warmth and kindness — we immediately felt like friends, not visitors. Sitting together, sharing conversations, and experiencing life inside a home in Kibera is something that truly raises awareness and shifts perspectives. It reminds you that behind statistics and headlines, there are families, dreams, and love. The most emotional and uplifting part of the tour was visiting the local orphanage and school that supports more than 250 children. We met several classes, their teachers, and the principal and founder of the school. The dedication of everyone involved is extraordinary. But the real highlight? The children. Their smiles, their hugs, their discipline, their respect — they genuinely change you. These are incredibly well-educated and well-mannered kids who radiate hope and potential. It was inspiring to see the excellent work being done by those supporting their education and upbringing. This part of the tour will stay in our hearts forever. We were also impressed by how discreet and respectful the local residents were. Not a single person approached us to sell something or ask for money. Everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming. Most importantly, not even for a single moment did we feel unsafe. We truly loved the local community. We ended the experience with a stop at a bone handicraft shop — a wonderful final touch that supports local artisans and allows visitors to contribute directly to the community. This tour is not just a visit. It is an experience that changes the way you see the world. It reminds you of what really matters — community, resilience, dignity, and hope. Kevin and Ismael, who were born and raised in Kibera, are doing incredible work alongside many others to uplift their community. By joining this tour, you not only learn — you also contribute in a small but meaningful way to their efforts. We strongly encourage everyone visiting Nairobi to take this tour. It will move you, inspire you, and stay with you forever.

Eye opener for well-heeled folks

Robin_K, Nov 2025
Kevin promptly picked us up, he and brother Ismael provided excellent tour as described. Learning how residents of Kibera live and support each other, the community development work Kevin is involved in is heart warming. My 12 y/o granddaughter visited on a clear sunny day and navigated the dark, narrow, steep and irregular steps with occasional assistance from the guys. There is a strong sense of community among folks surviving in this urban jungle. Despite misperceptions, many folks do have jobs and earn incomes. I was initially hesitant to book, but after reading numerous positive reviews, I took the plunge and booked the tour. Granddaughter came away with a sense of how blessed she is and with empathy for others living in difficult circumstances…exactly the lesson I hoped to impart.

Most authentic experience in Kenya

Robert_N, Nov 2025
Kevin showed me around the area of Kibera slums he grew up in. We visited an orphanage/school, he’s parents house and some local craftsman’s. I highly recommend Kevin’s Kibera tour if you are short on time and want an amazing Nairobi experience. Thank you for showing me around your home Kevin, Robert

Very interesting way of life

David_B, Oct 2025
This was a very interesting tour. Everyone in America should experience this so they are more grateful for all that they have. This is a tough way of life without any modern conveniences. I must say Kevin‘s family was super nice and very inviting. Kevin’s a nice guy. I think I would’ve wanted to know more about how you get a place or how do you get a second story place or how do you expand. How is it that some people have some electricity and all that

A Truly Authentic Cultural Experience

Johnson, Sep 2025
This tour offered a truly unique cultural experience. It went beyond the surface and gave real insight into the way of life for the slum residents. Despite limited resources, the sense of community was palpable. Kevin was very engaging and provided safe guidance the entire time. His knowledge and passion for his community is very evident. Love the way he and his brother are giving back to the community. It was a pleasure visiting his family home for tea and meeting his sister and brother. Also loved visiting the school, students and teachers. Be prepared for alot of walking, sometimes uphill and in narrow spaces. Also, due to a lack of plumbing resources, there may be smells at times. Something to keep in mind if you are sensitive. The experience is 1000% worth it. I booked this tour as a solo traveler and had a great time, especially meeting others on the tour. If you are open to bringing gifts, the community school could use supplies and the children love candy treats. If you are into immersive, unique, cultural experiences, this is the tour for you. It was an unforgettable experience that I would definitely do again!

Thank you so much Kevin....

LINDA_T, Sep 2025
Thank you so much Kevin. Communication pre tour excellent, arrived on time for direct hotel pick up. Very informative insight into the way of life in Kibera.. We were taken into a school, met the children, also taken into Kevin’s father’s house where we heard more about life in the slum. Would recommend Kevin to anyone thinking of doing this tour. For people with mobility issues , there is some walking over uneven ground, up and down some slopes.

Terrific experience

Tracey_S, Aug 2025
Excellent tour of a poverty stricken village and it’s people. Nobody in today’s world should live this way, yet the children are happy and friendly. A true eye opening experience!

If you are looking for an authentic experience in Nairobi, this is the one.

Wesley_D, Jul 2025
Ismael is a genuine and trustworthy man who gives back to his community through these tours. By doing this tour, you will not only have an unforgettable glimpse into the lives of the people living in Kibera, but you will support their community. I felt so thankful for Ismael showing me around Kibera. He seemed to know almost everyone we saw on the tour. He is obviously a man of the community. Everyone we met was so kind and welcoming. My favorite part was visiting the school (I am a teacher by profession). The kids were all very sweet and excited to receive a visitor. I was able to interact with the students and teachers and ask questions. They asked a lot of questions too and were just excited to know about me. It is not necessary to give a donation to the school, but I would recommend bringing some cash to donate. If you are going on this tour to begin with, you are likely the type of person that will be compelled by the school’s story and will take joy in donating (the school began as an orphanage, but has quickly grown). You will meet Paris, the founder of the school, and the donations can be given directly to her. She is super sweet! Thank you again to Ismael for showing me around your neighborhood, welcoming me into your home, and offering this amazing tour. Thank you to Paris and all of the teachers and students at the school for welcoming me. Thank you to all of the friendly faces along the walk for making me feel welcomed. If you are reading this, just book this tour, you will certainly not regret this amazing experience.

Inspiring tour!

Caron_H, Dec 2024
It’s very treacherous walking, so if elderly or have balance or walking issues, I don’t recommend it. It’s a real eye opener as to how terrible the living conditions are in the slum and the government gives them little or no help.

Jose_N, Aug 2024
Ismael was amazing. Only mishap was with pickup time as it was an hour later than expected. Nonetheless, this was a great and humbling experience. The people of Kibera slums are some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. Highly recommend it.

Go and give back⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Beverley_B, Aug 2024
The tour of the slums was humbling. I felt safe the entire time. Ismael was so gracious to welcome me into his home and family home. All the people and children we met along the tour were so lovely and friendly and excited to see me touring the slums. Ismael and his brother are making a difference in their community by giving a percentage of their income back to the schools and many children. Go and learn more about their way of life, community, schools and see the way they care for one and other. Highly Recommend.

A must more than Safari

David_N, Aug 2024
This was an outstanding tour..Everyone I met in Kibera was so kind and friendly. It's a tough life for them all but what a strong community. My guide, Ismael was wonderful..His family were like any other in the world...laughed, joked and argued a little! This is a must do in Kenya....more so than Safari. Support this and open your eyes to how lucky us westerners are..Thank you Ismael and to your wonderful family.

Not just a tour. It’s a life changer.

WaseemShami, Jul 2024
My wife and two kids (age 8 and 9) had a once in a lifetime experience. It’s an understatement to call this a tour. It’s more meaningful than that. You will have the privilege of seeing the story of young school children succeeding despite the odds against them. We also had tea with Kevin, Ishmael and his family which was a true honor especially meeting his parents. The couple hours just flew by.

Great tour with Kevin!

pattibrown, Jul 2024
If you want to experience the slums from someone that lived here then this is the tour for you. Kevin was an amazing Tour Guide that took us behind the scenes of life from someone who’s lived it. We had the opportunity to visit a School that he and his brother are working hard to educate the children that are growing up in the slums. They are doing an amazing job. We also had the opportunity to visit his parents home and have a delicious hot drink. After the end of the tour, Kevin made sure we got to our next tour and stayed with us until the Tour Guide arrived. It. is definitely a five star tour.

Great experience!

Mari_O, Jun 2024
It was a very good experience in my life. I think it's very rare to have an experience like this. I'm really glad I took this tour. 100% recommended. I was a woman participating alone, and at first I was worried about what would happen if it was dangerous, but the people of Kibera were very cheerful, kind, and safe. Children are so cute and they never begged for food money or something. What I thought was most necessary was the need to improve the garbage and sewage environment. Hopefully they can get better environment.

#1 Tour in Nairobi: So Impactful

Griffin_P, Jun 2024
If you’re visiting Nairobi, this is the #1 thing you need to do. Ismael, Kevin’s brother, was so hospitable my entire visit, taking me to an orphanage, school, his home, his parent’s home, a community empowerment bag-making company and a bone factory. But most of all walking through Kibera was the most moving experience. You truly realize how fortunate we are. Traveling as a single woman, I never felt unsafe. The entire time I was with Ismael, who you can tell he and Kevin are respected members of the community. 10/10 I hope to return one day. Highly recommend. Logistics: wear close-toed shoes that you don’t mind becoming incredibly dirty. Anyone who struggles to walk on uneven surfaces should not book: the walk is precarious at moments walking through the slum, especially if it’s rained recently.

Heart warming adventure

janelle_f, Mar 2024
Ishmail was a kind hearted and knowledgeable guide. He was eloquent, as well as interesting. He answered every question of the guests. He engaged the quieter guests. The walk is long and it can have some need for agility and physicality. It is an adventure that makes you know you could not do this on your own!!! The residents were so welcoming. I was very happy to learn about life in Kibera and see the team efforts in ongoing improvement.

Fantastic tour, experiencing the heart of Kibera with Kevin and Ishmael who were such warm, friendly and hospitable guides. We visited their homes, a local school/ orphanage, a cow bone jewelry making factory and was even given an excellent Kenyan restaurant recommendation which was very much appreciated. Do yourself a favor and book a tour with this company. It will be a memorable experience for certain!

compelling, hopeful, frustrating

DIANNE_F, Jan 2024
Anyone traveling to Nairobi must take a tour of the Kibera Slum. The guide grew up in the slum, and still lives there (Ismael.). The walk through is very safe as everyone knows the guide and trusts him. What stuck me most -- the children are running through the dilapidated neighborhood where they can easily fall through holes in sidewalks and but themselves on broken metal roofs and other dangers -- but they smile and enjoy themselves. Also Ismael showed us a school created for orphans, and the cave-like dwellings where the orphans reside. There are kind-hearted people running "pop up" schools with little or no funding -- focusing on raising funds to get the brightest kids out of the slums and into boarding schools. You will feel some hope after the visit, but you'll also wonder why the Kenyan Government can't at least provide clean water, toilets and showers to more people. It is quite frustrating.
