Encompassing Stone Town—Zanzibar's history-rich capital—and a newer area known as Ng'ambo, Zanzibar City is many travelers' first introduction to the island of Zanzibar. There are tons of things to do in Zanzibar City, from exploring massive local markets to seeing the boyhood home of Queen’s lead singer, Freddie Mercury. And if you do get a craving for a bit of natural beauty, many of the island’s prettiest beaches and fragrant spice plantations are but a short drive away.
Zanzibar City is at its most pleasant during its two dry seasons. The first is in January and February, and the second usually starts in the middle of June and runs through October. The city can get crowded during this second dry season, as it’s also when many travelers venture to mainland Tanzania to see the Great Migration. When planning your trip, keep in mind that because the city has a Muslim majority, some restaurants are closed during Ramadan.
The Stone Town part of Zanzibar City is best visited on foot, and many visitors opt to get their bearings by starting their trip off with a walking tour. Taxis are easy to find and are useful if you're heading to destinations further afield, while shared taxis known as dala dalas are good for getting from point to point on a budget.

This funky little shop, which works primarily with women artisans, sells everything from coasters and water bottles adorned with colorful Zanzibari-inspired graphics to apparel, accessories, and beaded lamp fixtures.
