Excellent day hiking amongst 2 large volcanoes! Great to get out of the city and see the beautiful mountains! Hike was not difficult, 13 km with about 400 m elevation gain, and wandered through various terrains including a waterfall with icicles! Our guide, Alan, was excellent and knowledgable. The lunch afterwards was so good and local. Would highly recommend this adventure!

Really good experience, Carlos and Alan were excellent guides. Wasn't too difficult but the altitude made it a bit harder.

There isn’t enough I can say on this review of how good Alan was. He looked after us from the very beginning of the tour before we even got on the shuttle. During the hike, he stopped and took breaks as often as needed for us, he gave us great knowledge on the landscape and the volcanoes were astounding! Once we had our lunch, we went to a local area where he fed a stray dog, and gave us the recommendations of food. Once we got back, he got in contact with our driver and stayed with us until our hotel picked us up, when he didn’t have to! He is a true figure of what a tour guide should be.

It was very good experience, the guide was very effective and polite. We have very good time with the group, the lunch was also very good

Really great experience with beautiful views! Carlos was a great guide. Be mindful of the high altitude!

The hike was enjoyable and worth it, even with clouds and limited visibility!
I do wish our guide, Betoh, had been a bit more engaging. I’ve done a lot of tours around the world, and guides are always talkative, educational, and interact more with the group.
Unfortunatelly there was no excitement from our guide in the morning ,much of the long drive was spent in silence, with little information shared about the areas we passed through or the volcanoes once we arrived. It often felt like the group had to initiate conversation and actively ask questions to get information or learn something interesting.
Response from Host, May 2026
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience—we truly appreciate it.
We’re really glad to hear that you enjoyed the hike, even with the clouds. The mountains have a special kind of magic, even when they don’t fully reveal themselves.
Regarding your comments about the guide, we genuinely appreciate your honesty. This is actually something we care deeply about—our experiences are usually known for having guides who are engaging, friendly, and proactive in sharing information about the surroundings, the volcanoes, and the journey itself, while creating a dynamic and connected group atmosphere from the very beginning. Our goal is for it to feel like much more than just a hike—it should be a full experience from the moment the day starts.
That’s why what you described is not the standard we aim to deliver. We’re already addressing this with Betoh and reinforcing it across our entire team to ensure the energy, interaction, and overall experience are consistently there.
Thank you for helping us improve. We’d love the opportunity to have you join us again and experience the trip the way we truly intend it to be.

We had a great trip! Only about 2 hours out of the city, went on about a 4 hour hike and then back. Hike was relatively easy but the altitude made it more difficult for me. Ate a snack at the top and then came down and had a big lunch at a small local spot. They had everything included and everything we needed. Overall we had a great trip and the views were beautiful

This was an awesome experience. The volcanoes were breathtakingly beautiful, and our guide, Bernardo, took excellent care of us. My girlfriend and I were the slowest in the group, but he made sure we stayed hydrated and well-fed, and ensured that the group maintained a reasonable pace. We were also joined on the hike by a handful of adorable street dogs, and ended the day with some delicious tacos and quesadillas.
As a fairly experienced hiker, I wouldn’t consider the hike itself terribly difficult under normal circumstances, but the altitude definitely made it much more challenging (I believe we reached about 3900m – significantly higher than CDMX even). If you’re not used to high altitudes, I would recommend doing this excursion towards the end of your trip, so you have a few days to acclimate, and would hydrate excessively both during and in the days leading up to your hike.
All in all, an incredible experience and well worth the price. Would highly recommend if you like the outdoors and have an extra day to escape the city.

It is a nice walking tour, very well organised, Mexico Traverias is a reliable company and on time. We got nice snacks in a backpack for the tour from them.
However consider which tour will you choose, because for us it was way too easy (14km 300m elevation gain). They have multiple day tours and those are more difficult the guide said.
The place where we got the lunch after was sweet, but the food itself wasn't so good.
It is pricey.

This trek was outstanding. It is by no means easy and requires good physical fitness. Bernardo, our tour guide, was very helpful. He regularly checked in with us, explained what was coming up next, and told us more about flora, fauna, and geography of the volcano. I highly recommend this tour because the views are great. But it is physically demanding and strenuous and require being comfortable hiking at the altitude with ground and rocks being at times slippery.

The first 8 or 9 kilometers are incredible. The last 4, on the road with cars, are not good. Bernardo was a very good guide.

Nice, long, yet easy hike. The trail is mostly a dirt road, bit it is scenic and peaceful. A very nice way to spend a day in a beautiful place away from the city. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgable. The food was very tasty, and the tour well organized. We were lucky and saw the volcano erupting.
Marta_L, Nov 2025
Nice walk, beautiful views. Nice guide. A good experience overall. However, I’d appreciate some more information from the guide about the park, volcanos, flora and fauna. Our guide did not really talk much.
Lisandro_O, Oct 2025
The experience was great; we had a wonderful day at the park; the weather was perfect. It is a really beautiful hike, through different landscapes, some woods and always with great views of both volcanoes. The tour guide, Bernardo, is a great guy; always explaining everything you see. It is an activity you must do if you have the chance

We booked this tour last minute because the tour we first booked had to reschedule, but after completing this tour I can’t imagine a better experience! The views of Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl are stunning, and our guide, Carlos, was very kind and knowledgeable. They provide you with lunch, water, a backpack, and hiking poles too, and treat you to a delicious traditional meal afterwards. The hike itself is not too difficult but you are at a high elevation (about 13,000 feet) so keep in mind how you handle altitude. We also went on a Tuesday and the trail was very empty and quiet (we only saw one other group on our hike) so if you’re worried about crowds, don’t be!

A really lovely way to explore the volcanoes around Mexico without needing too much equipment, a very enjoyable morning and lunchtime!
Ravi_N, Sep 2025
Amazing experience. You’re well taken care of - they will provide a backpack with food and water and some hiking poles. I went in September and all I really needed was a hat, sunglasses and some hiking boots. A warm jacket will help, since it can get windy and a little cooler in the morning. The views are amazing and the hike is not too difficult. You get to choose between a 9km or 13km hike. We did the 13km hike and it was perfect. On the way back they will take you to this very authentic taco place which is really great. Take lots of photos when you’re up hiking!

First impressions make a big difference and the initial greeting was less than pleasant. Perhaps there was underlying reasons which weren’t readily apparent.
Alek_H, Aug 2025
Stunning hike through high elevation terrain with panoramic vistas, can't miss experience if visiting Mexico City.
Kristian_D, Jul 2025
Excellent experience with expert hiking guide Sergio in beautiful mountain scenery, highly recommended even during the rainy season
(when there might be no clear view of the volcanoes)
Michelle_H, Jul 2025
The hike was beautiful and the guide was was very knowledgeable. The actual hike took about 5 hours and there were a few tough uphills but it was a great hike! Make sure you are prepared for the altitude, it is a struggle!
Jacob_H, Apr 2025
Carlos was an excellent guide. Knowledgeable and passionate about what he's doing, where he's going and who he's doing it with. I had only been at this elevation once before (summiting Mt. Fuji in Japan) and I've experienced altitude sickness before. I had already been in Mexico City for 5 days, so I was acclimatizing. I picked this hike because I wanted to strike a balance between nothing particularly exertive and seeing natural sights and wonders. I was bang on the money. Though the air was thin, at no point in time did the hike feel out of my depth. Lots of gentle swooping valleys, alpine grasslands, old pine forests; complete with a glacial river/waterfall at the end, and icicles forming on the diverse flora. What a surprise!
To speak of Carlos' excellent character, there was an older gentleman in our group who needed a lift back towards the end of the hike. Carlos hopped in the van and grabbed him so as to spare the man any additional fatigue and strain. That's great support! The gentleman landed in CDMX at midnight prior and there was likely no time for him to adjust to the conditions.
Though this hike was very very satisfactory, (like any good hike) it leaves you hungry for more! I'm likely to return to Mexico in order to do the multiday hike up Iztaccihuatl with Carlos' operator Travesias!
Muchas Gracias Carlos!!
Raj_P, Apr 2025
Carlos was a great guide. Knowledgeable about flora and fauna, happy to answer my 11 year olds many questions, also great information on both volcanoes. Early start and a long but satisfying trek.
Sandy, Apr 2025
Salva and Bernardo were great guides and always checked in with everyone. Plenty of food and liquids provided. The hike was generally fine (in terms of difficulty), but due to the high altitude and heat, it's a bit harder uphill. A bit dusty, so be prepared to get dirty. Lovely hike and some nice views!
Zachary_D, Apr 2025
This experience is a wonderful hike with amazing views of the two volcanoes. The guides were very helpful and will be sure to allow everyone to walk at their own pace. Be aware, this is a 9-10 mile hike at 13000 feet of elevation. The paths are well maintained and easy to walk, but the elevation and distance will feel strenuous if you not in decent shape. It is well worth the experience if you are up for it!
Lucy_F, Apr 2025
had a great time (57), my brother less so.
You do need to be relatively fit (able to walk up slopes for say 50m or so) - remember there's less oxygen per inhale there! It's more than a GB walk in a town park. Stretches of steep/long up, and generally level.
The guides were great, hanging back with my brother.
You get "snacks" - a full pack lunch for any appetite- and plenty water in your rucksack, and THEN a full Mexican meal afterwards (about 2pm) in an open-air cantina on the road back down.
No-one asked for money or tips either, so nice to feel a genuine part of the trip and not just a money-making opportunity.
(I did give something due to the extra input for my brother)
You stop about the tree-line, the top (half the height of Everest!)would take 10 hours (just the ascent). It was about 8 degrees C at start (you need a fleece, trousers and jacket) but I was down to shorts and T-shirt by the end.
You "hill walk" from about 3,500m to just below 4,000m, I think the guides said 300m of ascent (and back down) in 5 hours, with rests.

We had a wonderful time hiking in the beautiful volcano range with Carlos as our guide. Our group was small but we got along well, and the weather and scenery were both excellent. The hike was enjoyable but not too difficult and the pace of our group was relatively fast. Carlos is very attentive to everyone's needs. He is knowledgeable, warm, and spirited, and we felt well taken care of from pick up to drop off. It was a pleasure and an unforgettable part of our trip to Mexico City!
Anna_R, Mar 2025
This was a nice, guided hiking trip. The tour company drove our group up to the mountains and we were accompanied by two guides during the hike. The scenery was stunning, and we got lucky with the weather, it was not cold, the sun was out, and it was an enjoyable hike. A lunch at a roadside stand after the hike was included in the trip, and it was pretty good. The reason I took one star off the rating is because there was no commentary whatsoever provided during the tour. The tour guide basically acted as a driver and a shepherd during the hike. It would have been nice to hear some interesting facts about the volcanos, the area, the flora. Nothing like that was offered, he just walked in front of the group in complete silence. The second guide, Johannes at least answered questions when asked, but the main guide looked uninterested in interacting with the group.
Justin_W, Mar 2025
Beautiful hiking about 2 hours outside Mexico City. No one else on the trails apart from our group. Carlos managed the logistics well and was friendly. Something unique to do - most people we met in CDMX hadn’t been to these national parks.
We’re both pretty fit and didn’t have any trouble with the altitude - it’s a pretty easy hike as these things go. A few folk in our group got more out of breath.

The hike was great. Highly recommend. Beautiful waterfall at the mid point. Guides Carlos and Alan were informative and supportive. Lunch was good. Never had a squash flower taco. It was delicious.
