Our guides and driver were great! Helped us go slow, get the pacing right so that we didn't really get altitude sickness. The hike didn't gain as much elevation as I thought - which was a good thing because even though we hike at home, we were not used to this elevation. The team really took care of us including lunch after the hike and I really appreciated having them as our guides.

A nice hike around two lakes in the crater of Nevado de Toluca

There are two hikes on the Nevado de Toluca, one is the hike around the two lakes and the other one is to the summit. The trip sold on Viator is the hike around the lakes which is offered every Sunday. The hike started at the trailhead at 4173m with an elevation gain of 327m and distance of about 7Km that took around 5 hours. The pace was slow enough that most people with a reasonable physical condition should be able to follow. The company provided hiking poles, drinking water and a light lunch pack. Our hiking group was lead by two ladies, Paola and Alexandria. Both were very professional, helpful and friendly. Paola also spoke very good English, therefore communication was not a problem.. After we reached the highest point on our trek, we descended down to the big lake on a snow covered slope. This may look scary at first, but it was much safer then it looked and lots of fun from doing so.

I paid and booked for the experience for Saturday. After confirmation, I received a message from the operator saying unfortunately Saturday was fully booked, but they kindly offered to reschedule us for Sunday. We re-arranged our plans and confirmed with them that we could make Sunday work. Upon arrival to the national park, the friendly guide told us that we would not be hiking to any summits today, instead the itinerary was a leisurely stroll around the lagoons. He said that the summit trip is a different booking, that they in fact did on the previous day, Saturday (that I initially booked). This was very disappointing for us, and not what we would have booked. I felt that the admin who offered to reschedule us should have informed us that it was not the same trip booked for Sunday. When I reached the admin after the experience to offer them the opportunity to acknowledge and be accountable for their error, they refused to do so and blamed Viator for not being specific enough in the trip details. I hate to leave a one star review, as the guides were wonderful, the pick-up and travel was smooth and on-time, however I feel that future customers should be weary of these details and confirm/clarify with the operator if you have any doubts. (unless slowly strolling around the lagoons with hundreds of other people sounds good to you).

Dear Melanie, We regret that you feel that we have deceived you, but please believe us that the tour you took was the same as the tour you have booked on Viator. Our customer service team explained to you that the trip you booked on Viator does not describe that you will climb to the summit of Nevado de Toluca, we also sent you, days before the trip, an email where clearly says that the trip is a hike around the lagoons. It is true that we also have the option to climb to the summit (booking not available on Viator) and sometimes we have both options on the same day, that was the situation on January 27th. Maybe that was your confusion. During this season there are many people visiting Nevado de Toluca and it can be a different experience. If you are looking for fewer people, we recommend visiting it in the months of March, April, May, October and November. We feel that we don't deserve only one star because you comment in your review that our services are good, but anyway we appreciate your review.

Need to be physically intermediate to advanced in hiking

Well organised program though here are few considerations: 1. Make sure to travel with someone who knows Spanish because 97% of communication in Spanish and it particularly important to understand when it comes to safety instructions. 2. This trip requires intermediate to advanced hiking skills and adaptation to high altitude. You should be physically really strong and exercise regularly. 3. I couldn’t do the full hike because it was beyond my capabilities, one of the guides stayed with me and we did a shorter pathway. 4. Dinner at the end was good, but in my opinion unnecessary, I’d prefer going home after this long trip than eating. 5. Everyone is nice and kind. Excellent equipment and well organized trip.

El Nevado es un lugar extremadamente increíble, vale mucho la pena ir y conocer. La ruta es bastante accesible y solo hay que lidiar un poco con el tema de la altura, pero al llegar al punto mas alto de las lagunas la vista es impresionante e imponente. El paisaje le permite a uno conectar con la naturaleza y desconectarse de las carreras del día a día, nuestra guia Maria fue extraordinaria, muy amable, muy linda persona, nos compartió muchisímos detalles del Nevado, nos dio recomendaciones, iba a un paso que fuera accesible para todos los que conformabamos el tour y eso hizo que todo fuera muy ameno. El único tema que tuvimos fue que en la parte de atras de la microbus donde ibamos habiamos 4 personas y si ibamos bastante pegados y fue un poco incomodo, ademas de que el aire no estaba a buena temperatura y empezó a hacer mucho calor.

¡Increíble lugar!, muy bien organizado ya que no tuvimos que esperar o hacer filas para comprar la entrada, sin mentir las filas para pagar la entrada o esperar los transportes eran de por lo menos unas ¡500 - 800 personas!, el almuerzo súper bien todo muy rico, lo único malo fue la cantidad de personas que habían en el día que fuimos, ya que habían muchos otros tour operadores, así que recomendamos ir mejor entre semana o en la medida de lo posible evitar los días de temporada alta quizás así se pueda disfrutar más el Nevado de Toluca

Excelente passeio. Vale ir com agência de viagens e de van. Caso contrário tem que subir de jardineiras e a estrada é horrível. Verifique se a agência leva até a entrada de van, como a Ecotura fez com a gente. Foi maravilhoso.
