Overview

Get acquainted with Yucatecan specialties on this small-group street food tour of Merida. Walk with a local guide to Merida’s main market, a gelato shop, and more. Taste fresh fruit and sample plenty of local dishes, including empanadas, ‘cochinita pibil’ (slow-roasted pork) and ‘panuchos’ (tortillas stuffed with refried black beans). This was a deliciously awesome experience in Merda's market that you can only have by hiring a guide. Diego is an extremely nice person, knolegable and passionate of the Yucatan food. We tasted many local fruits and then different food with amazing flavours. Kastacan was our favourite. We ended with marchesitas and ice cream. After the tour we received an email from Diego with a detailed description of the tour so we can remember the names of different foods and a cookbook. We highly recommend this tour.

Excellent food tour in Merida!!

Spent a lovely time with Gisell in Merida. Very easy meet up, she confirmed the time and place via Whatsapp. She took us past the cathedral on the way to a local market. We had 5 stops there, trying authentic Yucatanean food such as panuchos. One of our party was pescatarian and Gisell was so accommodating and ensured she felt included and satiated at every stop, even arranged For the shredded turkey to be left off her portion. She guided us thru the many options for sweet, spicy and savory delites, noting her favorite candies. The sit down ceviche lunch was amazing, and the gelato at Pola was the icing in the cake. Gisell walked us back to the square and also sent links to weekend activities in Merida. She was a delightful guide and hostess; this tour is a must do for all foodies. Don't eat breakfast first!

Mixed, but would recommend

The good: - The tour guide had clearly lived in Mérida long enough to have a good sense for the city. All basic questions were easy for him to answer. - The variety of tastings was really good. I especially liked the spice tastes as well as the digestifs because they were a little unusual. - We got to see things we wouldn't have normally seen, like the making of tortillas from an industrial process. - I appreciated all the locations for various reasons. Some of them, like the ice cream shop, were excellent! The Bad: - The overall pacing. This biggest aspect here was that our tour guide took longer than necessary to explain things. Long enough for people to start feeling disconnected from the material. A second aspect of this is that it felt like we stood around, and while I expect some level of standing around, I don't expect to be as aware of it as I was with this tour. Our tour was supposed to be 3 hours, but we ended up taking 4.5 hours. And while I enjoyed it, this is something that could have been improved upon. - Some of the folks on our tour had expectations that weren't aligned with the realities of the tour. It would have been nice if our guide had been a bit more tuned in and/or addressing this expectation mismatch. - Our guide forgot to ever tell us the story why Edam is the cheese of the region. He clearly knew the backstory, but forgot to follow-through to tell us later. This is a small thing, but I figured I'd bring it up since I'm a bit bummed I never got to hear the answer.

Zulma was an excellent guide and we loved learning about all the foods and spices that are most popular in Yucatecan cuisine. All the food and drinks throughout were delicious. Inexperienced guide

I’ve been on more street food tours than I can count - likely half a dozen in Mexico alone. I’m afraid that Laura needed a bit more training than she received before leading tours on her own. To the discomfort of the older French members of our tour, she started by introducing herself and asking everyone else to do the same….but to include their age. She also took personal phone calls on the tour, at one point interrupting her narrative to have a phone conversation. Laura also did not consider food hygiene during the tour, having people retain their forks to repeatedly eat out of the same common food container for different food items. I’ve also never been on a tour where our guide did not call ahead to restaurants so that they would be prepared for our numbers - for locations where we sit down, I’ve always noticed that restaurants had an idea of our numbers so that they could make space for us and prepare food promptly. By not doing so, we were often left standing around waiting for the food vendors to serve existing customers before being seated, then more waiting while the vendor tried to prepare food for our unusually large group. And possibly because it’s Christmas, Laura also accepted gifts from two of our vendors, which was also remarked upon unfavorably by other members of our tour. All in all, as much as I love street food tours, I would not take another tour from this company or guide.

A detailed journey through the food of Merida

Would thoroughly recommend this trip for all foodies. Our guide Diego really looked after us on the tour and gave us a detailed lowdown on all the different local fruits from the market. We also tried tacos and tamales and this delicious pork rind which we also made into tacos! We then walked to a fish market to have ceviche and rounded things off with gelato. The tour was very much geared to ingredients and provenance of these things so it could be a bit slow on the eating side of things for some people. Despite it being a very hot day, it was still very enjoyable. Diego even sent us a recipe book via email at the end!
