Poorly organised tour but good experience

    hcolefax, Feb 2020
Thereis a lot this tour needs to improve on. We got picked up easily and on time and taken to the agency to join others in the main van. It was very chaotic here with people getting moved in and out of vans, and then when everyone was ready waiting in the van, it took another half an hour before we actually left, onlg to pull over and wait another 15 mins for someone to get in, that we later realised was the "tour guide" ( he didn't really say anything until for hours). There was very little/poor communication the whole time and everyone seemed confused as to what we were doing as we would pull up somewhere and the driver would just get out and leave for a while.. lunch is at a very overpriced restaurant, you dont get to wander at all or choose where to eat. And there is no mebtion of going to the film museum and no time. You also get taken to a rug shop for a "demonstration" which is them just trying to make you buy a rug. Our driver was wild, hitting speed bumps so fast we would go flying out of our seats, then he drove straight past the drop off point (a very obvious spot where the other tour vans and all the camels waited in plain sight, driving 20 mins up the road, pulled over, had an argument on the phone, then turned around and went back, meaning we almost missed the sunset. The camp is lovely but no information, everyone was milling around and wondering when dinner was as we didn't get served until 9:45, with no one able to tell us what the plan was. Breakfast the next morning was tea and coffee and stale bread and 3 small bowls of spreads between ~40 people that ran out very quickly. The drive back was fine, Ben haddou was lovely but the tour guide didn't really have much to say except for walking with us to the look out point. Again, no one really knew when we would eat or what the plan was as he asked if we were hungry for lunch, we said yes, and then we did the tour instead of lunch (~3pm lunch). The driver stopped on the way back, half an hour after the last stop to have a coffee with his friends, saying nothing to us, just parking and getting out of the car, leaving us all looking at each other wondering if we were supposed to get out too. He did this a lot, stopping to buy snacks in towns, getting petrol after he picked us up in both directions making us wait. Frustrating when it is a looong drive to start with. The most annoying part is that the nomads who work at the camp out a lot of pressure on you for a tip at the end, and kept pushing you wanting more, saying you had to tip enough for everyone. Then the "tour guide" who didn't really do much and only came on half the tour pressured everyone for a tip, then when we got dropped off it was the drivers turn to aggressively yell and shake his hat wanting a tip. I dont understand why you have to tip everyone when we have already paid for the tour. That being said, the van was very comfortable, the views were beautiful, the camp was nice, the view of the stars spectacular and the camel ride fun. I'm still glad we went.
