A Perfect Day in Essaouira – A Hidden Gem on the Atlantic Coast

    younes_l, Jul 2025
I took a one-day trip to Essaouira from Marrakech, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of my time in Morocco! The journey itself was scenic and relaxing, with stops along the way to see the famous goats in argan trees and visit a local argan oil cooperative — a great introduction to the region’s unique charm. Once we arrived in Essaouira, I was immediately struck by the laid-back coastal vibe, so different from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. The air was fresh and cool, and the sound of seagulls and ocean waves was incredibly soothing. We started our visit by strolling through the medina — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — filled with art galleries, colorful shops, and friendly vendors (less pushy than in other cities). The blue-and-white color palette and Portuguese architecture gave the town a peaceful, seaside charm that felt timeless. Lunch was a treat: freshly grilled seafood right at the port, with ocean views and a salty breeze. We also had time to walk along the city walls and Skala de la Ville, which offered stunning views over the Atlantic. There was even a chance to dip our feet in the ocean or watch the kite surfers dance with the wind on the long sandy beach. Essaouira has a magical, relaxed atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and soak it all in. Though it was just a day trip, I left feeling refreshed and enchanted. I’d absolutely recommend this trip to anyone looking to escape the city for a day and enjoy Morocco’s beautiful coastal culture.
