I very much enjoyed my time at the Shibori Museum! The friendly staff gave me lots of personal attention, and the scarf they helped me make is lovely! And the highly skilled artistic creations displayed in the museum were truly impressive. I'm very glad that I booked this experience!

Kind people who gave us a wonderful experience! The small place is personable, really wants to share their craft, and was an all around fun way to spend an afternoon! Do this!

So fun getting to make a scarf and also learn about the history and process of dying! Everyone was so nice, we had a really wonderful time.

Great experience! Clear instructions and the class is very hands-on, plus I love my scarf. The unexpected highlight was learning more about shibori and seeing the incredible masterpieces displayed on the 2nd floor while I waited for my scarf to dry. Highly recommend this activity!

It was a really fantastic experience with a dedicated one on one facilitator. Great way to relax and spending a good hour in a serene atmosphere. Easy to get to I loved the finishing touches at the end.

This class was GREAT!!! I'm not a particularly artistic person, but I loved every minute. Even more surprising, my teenage sons enjoyed it too! Everyone who works at the museum where the classes are held is wonderful -- helpful, kind, and just a whole lot of fun. Highly recommend!

Yesterday we had the absolute pleasure of taking part in an itajime shibori silk scarf dyeing workshop at the Kyoto Shibori Museum, and it was an unforgettable experience. The workshop was hands-on, inspiring, and surprisingly relaxing – a perfect blend of culture, art, and fun.
The staff were incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, guiding us through the traditional Japanese techniques with patience and encouragement. We each got to design our own silk scarf using the itajime (fold and clamp) method, choosing our colors and patterns. Watching the dyes take to the silk and then unfolding our pieces to reveal the final design was like unwrapping a little piece of magic. ✨
It was creative, satisfying, and so beautifully Japanese. We all came away wanting to do it again — and with our very own, one-of-a-kind silk scarves to take home. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Kyoto who wants to dive into traditional Japanese craftsmanship in a hands-on way!

This is an awesome way to experience the Shibori art in Japan. The hands-on activity for creating a tie-dye using a centuries old Shibori technique was fun and the end result was beautiful. We enjoyed it a lot!!

The staff were so much fun. The scarf dying was so much fun and we all were pleased with our outcomes. Finding the classroom was a bit of a challenge, it is on the 2F and not well marked from the street.

The owners of the Shibori Museum were excellent. They walked us through the process of making a dyed scarf and answered all questions. The display in the museum was beautiful. Our whole group completely enjoyed this event.

This was a great experience - very well priced for an experience in general and especially for this. My mother & son both had a great time making their scarves. I especially liked that they made a certificate for my son once he finished his scarf! They put a lot of effort into making sure the experience is something you won't forget.

Amazing experience, very personalized, my 12 year old son loved making the scarf and the museum tour.

What a great experience! I went solo, and I enjoyed the personalized attention. Instead of making just one scarf, I made three. The exhibition on the second floor is stunning and worth visiting. This was a perfect and relaxing way for me to start my last full day visiting Japan.

Kenji and his staff are just wonderful. Making our scarves was fun and the museum upstairs included a movie on the process plus the most beautiful art. If I return to Kyoto I will definitely visit again.

5 years ago, I visited Kyoto Shibori Museum and had a memorable experience, so when I brought friends from CA to visit for their first Japan trip, I definitely added this shibori scarf experience. As expected, they thoroughly enjoyed it! More over, they were in awe of learning about the process of making the many kinds of shibori on the informative video and seeing the many masterpieces in the upatairs museum. They developed such appreciation for the intricate work in doing some styles of shibori.
My friend purchased a beautiful leather and shibori purse and said she will treasure the hard work that went into making it.
Before leaving, I shared the story if my daughter's experience 5 years ago, and that she had recently married. The "cute grandpa" as she called him back then, gifted her with a shibori "lucky ball: charm to commemorate her marriage. Upon my return, I gave.it to her and she was touched by his kindness.
She's possibly returning to Japan in December and taking the shibori scarf class will be on their itinerary.

My husband and I loved this class. It was amazing and the staff was all super friendly. It was such a great way to learn some of the history of Kyoto and Japan.

This was so fun!! The team is very attentive and courteous. You start with selecting your desired colors and pattern, dye the fabric, and then get to explore the museum and exhibitions showing the talent and time it takes for this craft. By the time we were done looking through the displays and shopping our scarves were dried and packaged ready to go. Highly highly recommend!!

This class was excellent. The people and artisans go out of their way to make this a special experience. Better than expected in every way. Everyone we interacted with was a delight!

The gentleman’s father started the museum, and his grandfather was a shibori master, after making our wonderful scarves he taught us all about making the fabric for the kimono’s it was incredible!! Anyone interested in history of fabric or the ancient art of dying fabric or just wants a unique memorable experience should put this high on your list when you visit Kyoto. They are two minute walk from the castle so you could do both in a few hours. Thank you Shibori museum for such a wonderful, enlightening experience.
Sue_D, Aug 2023
Very interesting practical explanations of the techniques for hand dying and construction of works of art from the fabrics produced. The class was excellent: fun and very pleasing resulting scarves.
