Long drive (but our driver Murat was so good) but good views, car ferry ride, excellent tour of the Troy ruins with great historical context from our guide Omer, and good museum right next to the site. Excellent conversations and short naps.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review. We're delighted you enjoyed the journey to Troy, taking in the scenic drive, ferry ride, and especially the guided tour of the ancient ruins. Our guide Ömer is passionate about providing rich historical context and Turkish insights, helping to connect the legendary stories of Troy with the broader history and culture of the region. We're also pleased to hear that Murat ensured a comfortable and safe drive, allowing you to relax and enjoy the experience. The Troy Museum next to the site is indeed a fantastic addition, offering even deeper understanding of this remarkable place. Thank you for choosing us-we hope to welcome you again for more discoveries across Turkey!

I will reiterate what many others have said - the Troy excursion alone is fine (better if you are an archeology buff or know the Iliad very well). But the distance and the time spent is rough if you only do Troy.
It’s an early morning, then a 5 hour drive to Escabat, lunch, a ferry ride across the Dardanelles, a 30 minute ride to Troy, 1-2 hours at Troy (you get an overview of the Iliad on the ride to Troy and then go through an archeological visit at the site itself), and then the whole thing in reverse (minus Lunch).
If you can swing it with time - DEFINITELY opt for the two day Troy and Gallipoli tour instead. You’re on the same bus out, but you do either Troy or Gallipoli on day one, with an evening and morning to explore Canakkale before doing the other tour and heading back.

Drivers were smooth and safe. One of our party did not geft motion sickness, so we are greatful for good drivers. Lunch included was quite nice and offered enough time to have a meal and conversation without rush. Our guide, Charlie, was knowledgeable and truly engaged the group with legends and archeological fact. We talked about the iliad and we were impressed especially when charlie pointed out the south gate where legen has it, is the place Achilles died. I was thrilled as a little boy to be in that spot.We liked his youthful zeal which even captursd even the oldest members of tne tour. This trip i have been planning for over fifty years and this life dream was made all better with the excellent drivers and charlie of course.

MariaSolita_L, Aug 2022
It was a long drive and just few hours on the site .Very tiring experience . Better to do a 2 day trip but we did not have the time.
Alvin_W, Jul 2022
All I can say is “wow!” Loved this tour! So much history and our guide Burat was very fun and engaging with everyone. He really knew his stuff! He basically taught us a archeological lesson and made sure everyone had an amazing time.

A journey (long indeed) to the lost and forgotten city of Troy. The trip down history coupled with modern amenities and perfectly organized trip from Viator. If you love history then this trip although a bit tiring (18 hours in total from istanbul) is a must. Our guide Burak made history come live in front of our eyes. Loved the sea cruise in transit.

Loved it. Great tour to do in the off season when it’s not so busy. Great tour guide and lovely to get to see so much of the country in the drive.

I finally made it to Troy!
Since that was the plan, and since I had googled the info & pictures beforehand, I have had a very pleasant day. We made it to the site of Troy and visited the museum, too. And there were only 2 people on the tour, including me - basically, we both almost have had a private tour :)
Our guide Ensar is a very nice person, he's helpful and friendly, so it was a pleasure to meet him. The driver (sorry, I don't remember his name) was competent and drove carefully.
It is quite a long way from Istanbul, but, to me, it was worth it.

Unorganised! When I left my hotel, till I arrived at Eceabat ferry pier, no one told me what was I going to. The driver from the hotel just dropped me at the bus terminal in Istanbul and gave me the coach seat number and he was gone away; once the coach left the bus terminal, a bus attendant asked me for a bus ticket to Çanakkale. I told him I booked a day trip to Troy. He said this coach only stop at Eceabat, and they wouldn't take me back to Istanbul nor provide any tour guide for me because the coach was kinda public bus only! I was shocked, then I called the number which Viator's confirmation email has stated it, but no one picked up my call! Since I couldn't do anything at that moment, the bus attendant asked me to call the tour company again once we arrived at Eceabat. Luckily, there was eventually a tour guide looked for me at Eceabat ferry pier. Viator and the tour company in Çanakkale should let me know the itinerary and to explain to me all the procedures but not keep everything secretly. I didn't know how it was going while I was in the coach at Istanbul. It was my first time to experience this mess! Besides, it stated my lunch was a seafood lunch in one of the restaurant in Eceabat, but turns out the lunch was provided in Çanakkale and it was NOT a seafood lunch! The tour guide did a good job to tell me and the other joining tourists about the history of Troy very precisely while we were in the Troy Ruins. However, we didn't even have time to visit a Trojan Horse from the Troy Movie in the city centre of Çanakkale, our van was just pass by this site, coz we needed to catch the ferry back to Eceabat where we have to transfer for another van back to Istanbul. It's really chaotically since I board the coach at Istanbul bus terminal in the morning on that day!

We made our trip on Dec 12, 2019. The organisation was perfect: communication, pick up and drop off at our hotel, transportation, lunch, guidance during transportation, etc. Our guide in situ however didn't answer to this standard. He appeared to be a competent man, but his attitude was not at all conform. During the entire visit he gave the impression he wanted to get rid of it as soon as possible by rattling off his comment and constantly running metres ahead of us. By doing so he pulled down completely the level of the trip. That's the reason why rating the trip we leave it at 'average'. Understandable because the visit of the ruins of Troy was precisely the purpose of our trip.

Troy day trip from Istanbul was great. Beautiful sights, a lot of historic places, great attention, and a very knowledged guide made this trip a time to remember!
Georsadd G, Aug 2018
If you booked this tour for the lunch, look for another tour as they did not serve sea food. If you booked this tour for a short drive, look for another tour as we only spent literally just an hour in the site. But if you really wanted to see 'Troy' and hear the interesting stories as to why this is said to be the 'Troy' from the mythology, then this is for you.
Evelyn_D, Jun 2018
Mustafa is a great guide and took great care of us. He h has a good knowledge of history. The mini van was very comfortable.
Alan B, Apr 2018
We were a little concerned that the journey to and from Istanbul would be too long but the guides made it all very interesting and the journey time was fine. As well as the commentary from the guides we also enjoyed the views of the countryside while traveling to and from the site of Troy. Everything went according to the schedule and we found the experience at Troy extremely educational. The trip included a ferry ride and stops for breakfast extra cost and lunch included. My only suggestion for improvement would be for the guides to allow us a little free time on our own at the Troy site so that we could soak up the atmosphere there. I can definitely recommend this trip. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thr trip from Istanbul to the Echeabat was handled lousily by the driver who can hardly speak in English and kept on stopping for smoking break. He can not even tell us the places we were passing. We just slept all the way to Echeabat then met by a lady who accompanied us to a seafood restaurant who served meatball and pasta instead of the seafood as described in the info sheet. Then another guy brought us to the ferry to cross to Troia. The driver/guide who met us at the Camukkale Feribot is very good in his stories about Homers Iliad and Odysey but gave us a different version from the book of Homer and he doubted if there was really a Trojan War. On the way back to istanbul, all the passengers were sleeping on the minivan since we can not stand the body odor exuding from the driver. I have to put peppermint from my chaplips on my nosetrils to minimize inhaling the foul smell. First time i am giving VIator.com a 2 star.

The tour was interesting although the two-way car trip took up the majority of the day so do take note of this.

WOW! such an amazing site to see! a bit of a trek, but worth every minute
HoiChing_L, Jul 2017
A long but worthy trip if you love the historical legend of Troy!

Really interesting tour!
Very friendly guide.
Leslie O, Oct 2016
Site was interesting, trip was long, and guide basically hurried us through the site.
Theresa D, Oct 2016
It's a long way to see nothing. The tour guide did well with what there was but seriously there's nothing to see, this was a total rip off and I'd never recommend it to anyone that asks.
James N, Jul 2016
The trip was well worth it and the tour guide had a solid understanding about the location, the facts and the history. He was able to communicate effectively and added additional information about Turkey and some of its history.
Allen_G, Jun 2016
Excellent tour and tour guide was extremely informative. Disappointed didn't get time to do a photo of war memorial at Galipoli township
