This was one of the highlights of my time in Istanbul. It turns out that Turkish food is very diverse, and there are lots of flavors I did not expect. I highly recommend this.

Crossing continents one bite at a time

One of our favorite ways to explore a new city is through a walking food tour, you get a taste of the place both literally and figuratively. Our trek through Istanbul’s culinary corners was no exception. We began on the European side at the Spice Market, home to around 200 shops (a fraction of the Grand Bazaar’s 3,500+). Our first bite was at Börekçisi, where we sampled flaky börek pastries filled with cheese, spiced minced meat, and potato. The minced meat won us over with unexpected pops of sweetness from raisins. From there, we hopped a ferry across the Bosphorus to the Asian side. At Özcan Turşuları, we tried a plate of pickled vegetables, our host even suggested drinking the brine for health. Next, at Borsam Taşfırın, we devoured lahmacun, a flatbread topped with ground lamb, spices, lemon, and mint, rolled up like the best “pizza wrap” you can imagine. It was paired with ayran, a salted yogurt drink that Rob hated (I didn’t mind it). Then came a surprise favorite: stuffed mussels at Kadıköy Midiyecisi. Filled with spiced rice and eaten in one bite using the shell as a spoon, they were incredible. At Mis Tantuni, we enjoyed tantuni, lavash bread dipped in sauce, stuffed with meat, onions, and tomatoes, then topped with more sauce and blistering-hot peppers that had us sweating. Crossing back to Europe, we tried the unexpectedly delicious fish wrap at Bdnio, where pomegranate sauce elevated the flavors into something unforgettable (and messy—don’t wear white!). We ended at Safa Café with baklava and strong Turkish coffee. Our guide told us that you can read the coffee grounds left in the cup like a fortune. He demonstrated with comedic accuracy, predicting I’d soon be leaving Istanbul for Greece on a large ship…which obviously turned out to be true since we were on a cruise. Throughout the tour, our guide also gave us a snapshot into the history of Istanbul making the tour as education as it was delicious. I’d recommend this tour to anyone visiting Istanbul.

    We chose this tour...

We chose this tour because we were interested in seeing the differences between the two continents of the city. Definitely did not regret it. Walked through the spice market and tasted several teas, spices and Turkish delights. And we bought a few. Then We continued to frolic around the city and tasted so many different types of food and drinks. I was stuffed by the time we made it to the ferry to go across to the Asian side but I walked it off lol. I loved that we were shown restaurants off the beaten path instead of tourist spots. The food choices and combinations were definitely things I wouldn't have considered on my own. I also appreciate the historical lessons and experiences we also had while on the tour. Definitely worth it.

5 Star experience...Highly Recommended...Ali is the best host!

This was such an awesome experience. Ali's knowledge of the city as well as the food scene was sensational. I was so grateful that he still showed even though I was the only one there. We visited so many great places that only a local would know. Every food stop (I think it was 9!) had a history and unique story. I can say you would not find a more enjoyable experience. To top it off, it was great value! Teşekkürler Ali.
