It was indeed a memorable experience. Good takeaway from our 12 day trip. My husband and I took the train overnight for the first time. It was relatively clean and spacious. Snacks and water was provided and shared toilet is clean too.

Beware

Viator voucher is not valid for train. You get your train tickets thru a travel agency. It was very frustrating that it was not mentioned on viator that the voucher they gave was not valid to get on train. Spent about an hour trying get train tickets thru the veitnam travel agency. Was not happy with thus process at all

Dear reviewers, We are so sorry about your experience about the train Train in Vietnam is belong to government. We operate nicer cabins for tourists. It is a traditional transfer, not really modern as it in Europe. It is not as quiet as sleeper bus but safer, an unique local experience. If you book directly at the local company, it would be normal cabins for local tourists. For the train tickets, we just can issue on the date. It can be QR e ticket or voucher that you can check in at the specific desk. For the train from Hanoi to Lao Cai, Sapa, there are SP1, 3, 7 with differen departure times Please keep in touch with your operator/supplier during the trip for the support quickly Best regards, Luong

Wouldn’t do overnight train again

Julia_P, Dec 2025
Travelled on overnight train to and from Hanoi-Sapa with teens who are both over 6 foot. Damitrans cabin better option as longer beds. Train was surprisingly noisy and rattly. Also wasn’t expecting it to be so rocky, definitely not the gentle rocking others described. Be aware there are no lifts or ramps at train stations so you’ll need to carry suitcases up couple flights stairs. Interesting experience but wouldn’t do overnight train again.

Really cute cosy cabin....

Grace_M, Nov 2025
Really cute cosy cabin. However if you want any sleep don't book this. Expected to be able to get some sleep. The noise was so loud even with ear plugs and noise cancelling headphones we couldn't sleep. It stunk of cigarettes. The toilet didn't flush. Expensive for a night counting down until it was over. Not sure if it was because of our location on the train but beds 25+26 were not good.

Thank you for your feedback, Grace Morrall-Kelly Train in Vietname is belong to the government. We operate nicer cabins for tourists. It is a traditional transfer, not really modern as it in Europe. It is not as quiet as sleeper bus but safer, an unique local experience. Smoking is not allowed inside the cabin, some people smoke outside the cabin so you can smell cigarrette. We clean toilet before the trip and when the train stops at each station. We are so sorry about the experience. Thank you for your understanding. We will note and improve it next time. Hope you have a good time in Sapa and in Vietnam Best regards, Luong

Thanks so much for your feedback We arrange a private cabin for you as your booking. There is wifi on train, during the way from Lao Cai station to Hanoi, the connection can be weak when the train is moving in mountainous area. The train from Hanoi to Lao Cai, Sapa and back is belong to local government and we arranged you the tourist cabin with standard quality. There is a mirror at the lavabo, not inside toilet. We will take note your feedback and improve it better. Hope you had a good time in Sapa Thanks again for joining us. Have a nice time in Vietnam! Best regards, Luong

A unique experience- better than a sleeper bus

Kathe_M, Mar 2024
Taking the train to Sapa overnight was an easy choice over a sleeper bus. We bought a room (4 berths) just for the 2 of us. The beds are extremely firm but the room is cozy and private. Water, some weird baguette spicy chips and a soda was displayed on the night table free to take. With 4 people in a room, I imagine it would get quite stuffy but with 2 it was fine. The air conditioning was not to high. I recommend taking a sleeping aid because the train is narrow (around 9 feet wide) so it sways back and forth. And earplugs! There are bathrooms on both sided of the carriage and a nice sink to wash up and brush your teeth. It was not luxurious, but gets you from point A to B just fine.
