This experience was really magical, exceeding expectations in every way. The staff was extremely capable, friendly, articulate, and funny. We learned a lot and saw something extraordinary all while getting a great twilight excursion on kayaks. I can’t recommend them enough, especially Pedro who led the excursion and provided clear and detailed information about how bioluminescence works.

Cool, light kayaking with a group and experienced bioluminescence. Crew was good and had a good time.

We enjoyed the kayaking and the night trip.
However, we saw very little bioluminescent algae. We were expecting it to be much more than what we actually saw. We came from over an hour a way, we hoped to see more and were disappointed in what we actually got to see.
Our guides were incredibly helpful and super nice. We enjoyed going down the mangroves and experiencing the whole trip.
Here is my honest opinion. If you are close by and are looking for something fun and unique, then absolutely go. You will enjoy it, as long as you are not expecting to see what pictures show on the internet show. If you are farther away and it is going to cost you a lot to get there, then you decide if it is worth it. Overall, great experience, but not cost worthy from a distance and not for WOW experience.
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful and honest review, Shannon.
We’re really glad to hear that you enjoyed the kayaking experience through the mangroves and that our guides made the trip enjoyable and supportive along the way. That night paddle through the mangrove channel is truly a special part of the adventure.
Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon, and its brightness can vary from night to night depending on environmental factors such as moonlight, currents, nutrients, temperature, and salinity. Some nights produce a strong glow, while other nights appear as more subtle sparkles in the water.
Thank you again for joining us and for taking the time to share your experience.

Simple check in process. Friendly staff and attentive to needs of customers. Provided great history. This is not the first experience because we just live the bioluminescent bays and the whole kayaking through the mangrove experience! Do not leave Puerto Rico without experiencing it!
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you for sharing your experience, Jennifer!
We’re very happy to hear that you enjoyed the tour, the mangrove channel, and the opportunity to experience the bioluminescent bay again. It means a lot to us that you highlighted the check-in process, the friendliness of our team, and the information shared during the trip.
Kayaking through the mangroves at night and witnessing the bioluminescence truly is a special part of Puerto Rico, and we’re glad you felt it was a must do experience while visiting the island.
We appreciate you joining us and hope to see you again on your next visit!

Tour guides were great and knowledgeable. However, I think all kayakers should have been issued headlamps or told bring headlamps
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you for sharing your experience with us, Paul. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed the tour and found our guides knowledgeable.
Regarding the use of lights, the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) requires that only the guides carry lights during the tour. Since the lagoon is a protected natural reserve, minimizing artificial light helps avoid disturbing the wildlife and preserves the natural nighttime environment. Guides use their lights only when necessary, mainly for safety or emergency situations.
We appreciate your suggestion and your visit, and we’re glad you were able to enjoy the experience with us. We hope to see you again on another adventure!

Probably better without the moon, but I’ve seen far better in New England and the PNW/BC. Chaotic & crowded too. Big disappointment for me. Our viewing consisted of pulling a plastic tarp over our collective heads and splashing water around for ~5 minutes, then heading back.
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you for sharing your feedback and for joining us. We’re sorry to hear the experience did not meet your expectations. Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon that varies nightly depending on factors such as moonlight, water movement, temperature, and other environmental conditions. When there is ambient light, our guides may use a tarp to create a darker space so guests can better observe the glow present in the water. The lagoon is also a shared natural area used by several tour operators, which can make it feel busy at times. We appreciate you giving the experience a try and value your feedback.

It was amazing!! Great staff and the kayaking wasn’t too hard. The bioluminescent water was beautiful ( not peak season but we were still able to see it !!)
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you for sharing your experience! We’re so glad you enjoyed the adventure and that our team helped make it a fun and comfortable night on the water. Even when the glow varies from night to night, it’s always special to witness the bioluminescence in the lagoon. We truly appreciate you joining us and hope to see you again on another adventure in Puerto Rico!

We had such a great time doing this tour! It is important to come in prepared that this is not a small group activity where you bond with nature- there are TONS of groups doing the same thing at the same time. I knew this going in so was not disappointed, just need some expectation management. The kayaking portion was smooth and easy. I didn’t realize how many people just don’t know how to kayak, but our guide was patient with all of them. He did a great job explaining things, gave a really nice talk about the science, and then we covered our kayaks with tarps to maximize the effect. It was beyond our expectations!! I was stunned at how cool the bioluminescence was. All of my friends were giddy with it. We had a great time!!
Bring bug spray and prepare to get wet!
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you so much for sharing such a thoughtful review! We’re really happy to hear that the experience exceeded your expectations and that you had such a great time on the water.
Laguna Grande is a shared natural area where several tour operators launch during the same time window, so we always appreciate guests who come prepared with that expectation. We’re glad the kayaking felt smooth and that your guide was able to help everyone feel comfortable along the way.
It’s also great to hear that you enjoyed the science explanation and the moment in the lagoon. When conditions allow, using the tarp helps create a darker space so guests can better appreciate the bioluminescence that nature offers that night.
Thank you again for joining us and getting ready to get wet; it’s definitely part of the adventure! We hope to see you again on another visit to Puerto Rico.

It was enjoyable kayaking by moonlight. But I was greatly disappointed at what I thought we would see in the bay. Just a few sparkles when you splashed your hand in the water. Too expensive of a trip for some sparkling
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed the nighttime kayaking experience.
Bioluminescence in the lagoon can vary from night to night, from faint sparkles to a brighter glow, depending on natural factors such as moonlight, water conditions, temperature, and other environmental elements. Because it’s a natural phenomenon, brightness levels can’t be guaranteed.
Even when the glow is subtle, our goal is to help guests experience the lagoon in the best way nature allows that evening. We truly appreciate you joining us and sharing your thoughts.

It was fun, but would be hard for inexperienced kayakers. It was pitch dark and sometimes tree branches get in the way which would hit you in the face.
Response from Host, Feb 2026
Thank you, Lisa, for sharing your experience.
Night kayaking can definitely feel more adventurous, especially for first time paddlers. The mangrove channel is natural and unlit, which is part of what makes the experience unique; but it can also mean brushing past branches along the way.
Our guides are always positioned throughout the group to assist and help everyone navigate safely, and we provide a full safety and paddling briefing before departure. We’re glad to hear you still had fun and appreciate you pointing out that it can feel more challenging for beginners.
Thank you again for joining us!

My husband hurt his back a couple hours before the trip. I asked if we could reschedule as we couldn’t make it that night. They didn’t provide a new time and refused to give a refund unless we provided medical documentation. This was a reocurring injury and didn’t need immediate hospitalization. Any medical docs we had for this injury would need to be faxed from the US and that would be highly invasive and we don’t feel comfortable sharing that. Very poor customer service!!! Go with another group!
Response from Host, Feb 2026
Hello Kristen,
We are truly sorry you were unable to join us.
As clearly stated on Viator and TripAdvisor at the time of booking, participation is not allowed for guests with neck or back conditions. These safety restrictions are in place to protect all participants during a nighttime kayaking experience that requires upper body strength and stability.
While we understand that situations can arise unexpectedly, medical conditions are personal and not something we can anticipate unless disclosed in advance. For this reason, we rely on guests to carefully review the participation guidelines prior to booking.
Because the request to reschedule was made only a few hours before departure, and the tour was fully sold out at that time, we were unable to offer an alternative time. The subsequent refund request also fell outside of our same-day cancellation policy.
Each reservation secures exclusive spots that are no longer available to other guests. For this reason, our cancellation policy must be applied consistently to ensure fairness to both our staff and all travelers.
When exceptions are requested due to medical emergencies, we are always willing to review supporting documentation for refund consideration through Viator. This request is not intended to be invasive but to ensure fairness and consistency for all travelers, as many guests request similar exceptions.
Safety, transparency, and equal application of our policies are extremely important to us.
We genuinely wish your husband a smooth recovery and hope you are able to enjoy the rest of your trip.

We truly appreciate you highlighting our team’s communication and the energy of our guides. We work hard to make sure every guest feels safe and informed and has a fun adventure out on the water.
We’re so happy you got to experience the magic of the bioluminescence.
Thank you for choosing Island Kayaking Adventure. We hope to paddle with you again in the future!

Bring bug spray. The only danger of wearing flip-flops is them perhaps falling in it. It's better to have water shoes or sandals that stay on your feet. The first part of the trip is through a very densely wooden area. That's why the bug spray is needed.
Response from Host, Feb 2026
Thank you so much for your 5 star review, Holly!
We’re glad you enjoyed the experience and appreciate you sharing those helpful tips. For our guests’ comfort, we provide a natural, DEET-free insect repellent before the tour, especially for the mangrove area at the beginning of the paddle.
We’re happy to hear you found it to be a great experience for couples and would love to welcome you back again!

Very crowded. Many kayaks taking off at the same time. The only way to see the bioluminescence is with a black tarp placed over you in the kayak. I would recommend going to Mosquito Bay instead.
Response from Host, Jan 2026
Thank you for sharing your feedback, Jeanne.
We understand that the lagoon can feel busy at times, especially on high demand nights, as Laguna Grande is shared by multiple permitted outfitters. To ensure safety and a smooth experience, we add extra guides when higher traffic is expected to better support and manage our group.
Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon that varies nightly, which is clearly explained in our tour description. Some evenings it appears as subtle sparkles, while other nights offer a brighter glow. When conditions are softer, a light-blocking tarp may be used to help guests better observe the natural effect.
We appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective, and thank you for kayaking with us.

A lot of light pollution—bioluminescence is underwhelming but the workers are great. Call and find out if the algae is active before you go
Response from Host, Jan 2026
Hi Laurie,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us.
Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon, and its visibility can vary nightly depending on factors such as moon phase, recent weather, water conditions, and surrounding light. While we can never guarantee a specific brightness level, we always do our best to set clear expectations before the tour.
We truly appreciate your kind words about our team. Our guides work hard to ensure guests feel safe, supported, and well taken care of throughout the experience. We’re glad that part of the tour stood out positively for you.
Thank you again for your feedback. It helps us continue improving and educating visitors about this unique and delicate ecosystem.

All the instructors were great they even waited for us cause we were 8 min late even tho they had another group waiting...I thought the bio luminous in the water was going to be more prevalence but overall it was a nice experience
Response from Host, Jan 2026
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience, Yesenia, and for your kind words about our crew.
We’re really glad to hear that our team was able to accommodate you despite the delay and help ensure you still enjoyed the tour. Our guides always do their best to provide a welcoming and supportive experience whenever possible.
Regarding the bioluminescence, we completely understand your expectation. As a natural phenomenon, its intensity can vary nightly due to factors such as moon phase, tides, and environmental conditions. Some nights it appears as bright sparkles, while on others it can be more subtle. Even so, we’re happy to know that overall you found the experience to be a nice one.
We truly appreciate your feedback, as it helps us continue improving and setting clear expectations for our guests. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back for another night on the water.

Melissa_O, Jan 2026
I was apprehensive about rating this experience. We booked 2 other excursions through this app and they exceeded our expectations. This one, not so much. We close the 8 PM in hopes to see a fair amount of bioluminescence. Unfortunately, we only saw some sparking while under a tarp, like blanket static in winter. I will say, the stars looked amazing.
The lead guides were personable and knowledgeable, however they had zero control over the guests. Also, PR is not the only place to see bioluminescence as he stated. The overall group was rather large (15+ kayaks plus several guides) and unruly. There was a group that definitely had been drinking. We smelled it on them prior to departing, after, and they were parked next to us and were drinking in the parking area. They were loud and obnoxious. There were 4 guys (different group) that blatantly ignored the guides to stay single file, 6 feet apart, and thought it was hysterical to ram into each other, and laughing at whomever they rammed into. The light on the kayak in front of us was out, so in the dark it appeared that we were lagging behind. Others decided to pass and we warned them that there was a kayak with no light in front of us but they proceeded to rush past, slamming into them. One couple hit us at least 5 times causing my son to catch his paddle as they again slammed into us smashing his finger. One couple ahead kept messing up the single line because the young lady (in the front seat) refused to paddle. She stayed on her phone for the majority of the trip, ignored him when he was begging for her to help, leaving him to paddle. He kept losing control and was exhausted, especially while we were going against the current. We drove an hour and a half to see a few sparks under a tarp. I would not book with this company or recommend this particular excursion.
The guides really need to be assertive during the trip and deny drunk kayakers.
Response from Host, Jan 2026
Thank you, Melissa, for taking the time to share your experience with us. We truly appreciate honest and detailed feedback, as it helps us continue improving.
We’re sorry to hear that this tour did not meet your expectations, especially after traveling a long distance to join us. We understand how disappointing that can be.
Regarding bioluminescence, we’d like to gently clarify that we do not state that Puerto Rico is the only place in the world where it can be experienced. What we share with our guests is that Puerto Rico is unique in having three of the five known bioluminescent bays in the world that glow year round, which makes it a very special destination. We also recognize that there are other locations where bioluminescence can be seen, such as parts of the Bahamas and Jamaica, among others. As with any natural phenomenon, brightness varies from night to night due to factors such as moon phase, tides, currents, and weather, and therefore cannot be guaranteed. On brighter moon nights, tarps are used as a tool to help enhance visibility.
We also want to clarify that we have a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol and drugs before and during the tour. This is not a private excursion, and guests from different groups share the experience. While most participants follow the rules and instructions provided, we understand that group dynamics can sometimes be challenging. Guest safety is always our top priority, and situations involving unsafe behavior are taken very seriously. Your feedback highlights the importance of maintaining a strong balance between fun and safety, and we will be reviewing this with our team to ensure we are all aligned and proactive on the water.
This experience takes place in a natural mangrove ecosystem, and while it is designed to be accessible, conditions such as tides and currents can vary. Some nights may require more effort than others, even though the activity itself is not intended to be strenuous.
Regarding the kayak lights, all equipment is checked daily prior to each tour. While rare, a light may occasionally turn off during the activity. We will reinforce with our guests the importance of immediately notifying a guide if this occurs, so it can be addressed promptly and visibility and safety can be maintained throughout the tour.
We truly regret that your experience was impacted by factors that affected your enjoyment and sense of safety. Your feedback has been shared internally and will help us continue improving our procedures and overall guest experience.
Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts.

We had such a great time! It is so cool kayaking in the dark- seeing the stars. We had pretty great visibility in the water, they have a moment where they put you under a tarp to see the lights even brighter in the water and it’s pretty magical. The crew was so awesome & had a wealth of knowledge! Would do it again!

Kelsey_K, Nov 2025
This tour was extremely overcrowded and honestly very disappointing. There were far too many kayaks on the water at once, making it chaotic and difficult to enjoy. Instead of taking in the bioluminescence, we spent most of the time trying not to bump into chaotic kayakers and other groups.
The experience started poorly we spent about 30 minutes tied together, crashing in the waves while waiting for our turn between four other massive tour groups launching from the same spot. Everyone ended up completely soaked before we even began, which was unnecessary and uncomfortable.
The guides seemed overwhelmed and rushed, offering very little personal attention or information about the area. There was a lot of yelling at guests who were struggling to paddle, which added to the stress. The bright headlamp one guide wore completely ruined the nighttime experience, and the wet tarp used to simulate darkness was just unpleasant.
Puerto Rico is a beautiful place, but this tour was not the way to experience it. Definitely not worth the money. I’d recommend making the trip to Vieques instead and finding a smaller, more organized company.
Response from Host, Nov 2025
Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review. We’re sorry to hear that our adventure did not match the type of experience you were hoping for. Every guest comes with different expectations, and while many visitors that same evening shared 5 star reviews, it’s clear that this particular tour wasn’t the right fit for you.
Laguna Grande is the main area where the bioluminescence can be fully appreciated. In the mangrove channel you can also see the glow from time to time, but it is a very narrow passage shared by multiple tour operators. Because not everyone has the same level of kayaking experience, guests may drift, slow down, or need assistance. For safety reasons, our guides must use their headlamps when helping kayakers in those moments, especially in such tight spaces, and this can occasionally affect the darkness needed for ideal contrast.
Our team works hard to manage spacing, pacing, and safety in an environment that is naturally busy and shared with many other groups. We appreciate you recognizing the effort of the guides despite the challenges of the night.
Your feedback is valuable and helps us keep refining our coordination and operational procedures so we can continue offering a safe and enjoyable night adventure for our guests. Puerto Rico is a vibrant and beautiful island, and we truly hope the rest of your trip was memorable.
