Additional Info

  • Confirmation will be received at time of booking
  • Not wheelchair accessible
  • Near public transportation
  • Travelers should have a moderate physical fitness level
  • Many children have enjoyed the tour, however it’s based on Rowling’s rags to riches story & so is dark. The more difficulties a person has overcome, the more you can learn from them. This tour has darker stories from Rowling’s instructive biography, which I hope will inspire those ready to achieve more
  • The tour is also based on the books, the books have some adult themes which I give credit too, because 'they're just children's books' annoys me. People who have just seen the movies may not be aware of these darker themes
  • 5 km+ of up and down walking through Edinburgh’s hilly old town
  • 4½ HOURS is a long time so BREAKFAST. Think everybody’s favourite Gameskeeper: if your feet haven’t swollen to baby Dolphins - keep shovelling!
  • This tour is also available as a private tour, along with a more JKR-comprehensive 5¾ hour private tour & 8hr Potter Cornucopia with lunch. Please contact Potter Tour
  • ENDS AT: City Chambers, 253 High St, Edinburgh, EH1 1YJ
  • Not recommended for people requiring mobility aids, e.g. a stick, 6km of hilly walking is demanding. Contact me for a private tour
  • This is a private tour/activity. Only your group will participate

Great walking tour

Amy_W, Jul 2025
Tons of info about JK Rowling and a great walking tour of the city that included places we would not have visited other wise.

Response from Host, Nov 2025

Thank you, Amy. There is much enjoyment to be had discovering things for yourselves, turning corners and "Aha! Mission in sight!". So I'm pleased whenever it is felt worthy of the money, and for Amy at least, seemingly elevated over similar activities. Everything is subjective; it's just Amy is the best. Thanks for choosing me. x Sam 🙇

Tour guide is excellent

shirley_b, Jun 2025
Very very informative about JK Rowling her life and journey to write and publications of her books Query tour guide gave it a special experience

Response from Host, Nov 2025

Yes, director Christopher Columbus said fans should "Separate the art from the artist". My tour definitely doesn't do that. The Harry Potter story of Edinburgh is JK Rowling's story, the struggles of an artist finding their way, with the writing and creation's gradual progress often entwined. But mostly it's JK. Poor me. I'll never take Columbus around 😭😭😭 I did very much love his realisation of the Chamber of Secrets, the TV series has Hagrid boots to fill. But it looks like it's going to be Cornish, not Scottish... 😳 Shirley, by contrast, was the right customer for me 💞 x Sam

The pros: tour guide is...

politikchik, Apr 2025
The pros: tour guide is very knowledgeable about Rowling’s history and the influences on her writing both for Potter and her other works. There is a lot of information to take in! I’ve done another tour before and we went to about 1/3 of the locations this tour covers. Guide was always quick to point out places to sit to be comfortable and he incorporated some fun little interactive photos and wizardy activities to break up the time. Needs some fine tuning: the meeting point on the itinerary was incorrect so even though we were on time we were in the wrong starting location. The guide messaged us after we were 5 minutes “late” otherwise we would have missed it. it was very difficult to hear the guide and he also talked very fast so even though we speak English (well, American) it was hard to understand him at times. He also tends to walk fast so if you have mobility issues it might be difficult. There were some points about Rowling’s life that were pretty deep dive history - maybe about 30-45 minutes could be edited out. I’m a BIG Potter fan and it was a lot even for me. Overall, the guide is a sweet man that is very eager and enthusiastic to share his knowledge. He also makes a great effort to make it interactive by including fun little touches that I don’t want to mention to keep the surprise. Some of the details of Rowling’s life could be paired down and I wouldn’t recommend this tour for the casual fan.

Response from Host, Apr 2025

The meeting point was correct. You went to the end point. The emails included this information so people can plan their activity at the end of the tour. ✤ I've now removed the end point, it is now set as the start point. This isn't quite true, but I can take people to the start if they wish and it will avoid tired people making the end-is-the-start error again. ✤ I tried to be humble about that, saying I would remove the existing endpoint to remove confusion, which I have done, but I have been burned anyway. ❝MRS FIGG I NEED YOU!❞ The edit you suggest, well, much of that time is small impact story between stops. I could walk folk in silence, weaving in and out of the oncoming pedestrians. The tour is sometimes done this way. It means the stops make less sense but they can still be followed. ✤ Sometimes I omit the backstory and have a conversation. But I find over the tour's period both can be done. ✤ There is a minor amount done while seated. On my 🕸️-site the major selling point is this: ❝ In Edinburgh, you can step from the page's sketches to skylines mushroomed with stone Wizard towers in the twinkling of an eye. But what's inside a mind that's personally earned us much of a billion in taxes? How does it work & how does it think? ❞ The stories have clues on how JK Rowling became successful, how she cultivates her family, her relationships with colleagues. Those stories illustrate her attitudes and paradigms that led her up and sustained her. These may be generalisable, they're essentially 'self-help' stories. ✤ Unfortunately, the forging of Rowling didn't wholly occur in Edinburgh, so yes there is a deep dive into history. These themes may be obscured by the fact that Potter connections are woven into Rowling's history and that element is simply factoid trivia that bulks the stories out, but honours another theme. 'Harry Potter'. ✤ The self-help theme does make it less fashionable, I had a trans performer tell me 'We don't want her lessons!'. OK, well you're not on my tour, I don't have your money, and there are many other tours which do things differently 🧙‍♀️ » 🔥 It has been said many times that people can't understand me. If you choose me and you're European, then expect a trial! I can make it a little less risky to commit. I can promise a 💯% refund if you cancel the tour within 20 minutes of commencement but then you will need to reorganise your day, so think hard! ✤ I took my hand to the doctors. A sprained ligament. You need to behave better when travelling. x Sam

JK Rowling Rules!

Kelly_G, Aug 2024
This was our first tour. I liked how our guide kept us moving! I wish we had had headphones as the accent was new at this point of our trip and my hubby had only some knowledge of Harry Potter and JK Rowling so it headphones would take the strain of listening away. I thought it was great to learn and experience so much in a short time! Especially at the museum. Thank you for the fun and inspiration from how JK Rowling wrote HO. Changed my walk through this world. I like the magic at the end but not the prayer😢.

For Harry Potter Fans

Amy_D, Jun 2024
Sam puts a lot of heart into his tour. He adds many small details and personal touches and gifts. My son loved the tour and we all learned a lot.

Response from Host, Jul 2024

Oh cheers Amy, four and a half hours can be a slog for some younger kids but ancient city visits are HISTORY HISTORY HISTORY, so I think it's a fair gamble to think an excursion from that will engage. Thank you for the generous review and I was (and now even more so) happy that you chose me. x Sam

Very Educational and Entertsining

Keith_S, May 2024
Sam, our guide was very knowledgeable about JK Rowling and the background of the writings as well as locations and local references.

Response from Host, May 2024

Thank you Keith, you're a sweet heart ☺️ Sam

We had a great timing...

Crystal_D, Apr 2023
We had a great timing learning about JK Rollins and our tour guide Sam was great!!!He was very informative

Response from Host, Apr 2023

Thanks, Crystal 🙏 It’s not a short tour, glad you & Jason appreciated it. I think Rowling may prefer her new name! Mobile keyboard right 😖 I had an editor seeking a private tour grammar correct my emails 😳 Anyway, I’m a bit like a Hippogriff, some folk think I’m alright, other folk think ‘he’s A DANGER!’. Glad you came down my side 💞 May your robes seldom rumple & your cauldron never crack 😭 x Sam

Awesome

Angelica_A, Oct 2022
We enjoyed the trip and we strongly recommend this tour. Our guide, Sam, was very friendly and well prepared with a lot of information and surprises.

Response from Host, Oct 2022

Cheers, Angelica! So glad, I strive for maximum misery, in JK's story, glory in it; pleased it made the conclusion all the sweeter for you. Ah but not entirely well prepared though. I've had a date to look up. Thanks for 2 kind reviews 😍 And the tip! You guys were heaven sent 💞 I wish you McGonagall's fist of iron & Hagrid's glowing heart. x Sam

Kept the clueless muggles entertained

MarieCarla_S, Sep 2022
Good tour. The guide really prepped for our tour. And he really tried his best to entertain my muggle husband who doesnt have any clue about HP movies and books. He had us sorted and he gave us chocolate frogs in the end. Too bad the rains were torrential so we had to end it abruptly.

Response from Host, Sep 2022

Cheers Marie, I packed a couple of umbrellas for the tour the following day, to avoid wash out. The forecast for our tour was pure Trelawney, completely faulty. Thank you for the kind review, sure wasn't expected! He was a good husband, humouring your passion, a Mrs Figg, rather than Filch 😘 Sam

Christmas morning for Potter fans!

Victor_C, Aug 2022
Wow, this tour far exceeded our expectations. Sam was simply AMAZING. The four hours flew by, and we were moving quickly. Any serious Potter/Rowling fan would devour this tour. Sam is a fount of knowledge, not only on all things Rowling and Potter, but Edinburgh in general. I HIGHLY recommend this tour. We had a fantastic time.

Response from Host, Sep 2022

^^^ Cheers Victor! Yes a Fount of knowledge, pivot your face towards me and it's like you're doing CPR on a mermaid, a blast of icy Black lake water smacks you in the face. It flew by likely because you had heightened interest; thanks for the call to action for folk like you, you are an ideal student 😆 I wish for many more. x Sam

Fun Interactive Tour

Danielle_T, Aug 2022
The tour was really interesting and interactive. Our guide was really knowledgeable and took us about the city in a fashion that didn't make it seem to like it was 4 hours. I really recommend this tour for not only for your love for Harry Potter but also as a great way to explore the city and hear the bits about the city and the sights.

Response from Host, Aug 2022

Cheers, Danielle! I think it could be more interactive, really given the length it's a minor feature, this amount of speech struggles to engage kids who have not completed the books. I'm aware that many of the locations on the tour people won't be passing to revisit, so I try and have a few bits to say about the location to fulfil all customers' interests. I'm pleased it didn't seem like 4 hours, in the main it is a lot of intense detail on Rowling's life, how that richens her epic, on the writing, the real and, occasionally, the whimsical inspirations; it touches on Rowling's themes and sometimes what those themes achieve. If you want to Cancel JK bring a doctor, you'll probably have an apoplexy 😱 It'll be the longest 4+ hours of your life 😵‍💫 Glad you chose me Danielle, worked out well for me too 💞 x Sam

Interactive, interesting and great fun!

Tim_B, Jul 2022
I booked this for an activity for a stag weekend as my brother (the stag) is a huge potterhead. This was a great activity very interactive and interesting. Sam (our guide) did a number of fun activities throughout the tour which got the whole group involved and felt a part of it. Also he kindly bought us some ice cream! It was a great way to explore Edinburgh and get your bearings around the city. There were a number of opportunities to sit down throughout the tour, so you aren't walking for 4 hours! Sam was a great guide, very friendly, knowledgeable and appropriately dressed in wizarding attire. We learnt a huge amount and had a lot of fun. Only advice I'd give to Sam is perhaps keep it to 4 hours. Our tour lasted around 4 and ½ hours and some of the party started to flag a little towards the end. Though that's probably expected for a stag do. Advice to anyone on this tour would be to have a good/big breakfast before and wear comfortable shoes. If you like Harry Potter (especially the books) and don't mind a walk, this tour is for you!

Response from Host, Jul 2022

YES! Brilliant, a review! Thanks for sticking with it Tim. Rowling's now disavowed the Kirkyard; she never visited, contradicting various national and local newspaper stories, clearly rather fanciful. So I've cut the amount of stuff taken in the Greyfriar's Kirkyard. A good gift because it's a long tour at 4 hours, irrespective of overruns. Thrilled you chose me Tim, hope the wedding is epic, no Moaning Mytyle floating above the congregation, wailing 'it's all your fault I'm deid'. She mixes up her churches sometimes; sometimes I think she might be brain dead - bless her. x Sam

Sweet experience

Judy_M, Jun 2022
Sam was very knowledgeable and excited to share it with us. It would be helpful if he spoke a bit slower, but we got used to his cadence. He even bought us ice cream. It did. It feel like 4 hrs because we had a great time.

Response from Host, Jul 2022

Thanks Judy, yes I do have fits of the gabbles, I'm hard for those non-fluent to follow at times, and sometimes even for folk who are! It's funny when folk try and google translate me, Google just says " Ummm.... 🤷 " One day they'll crack it. May your bushy hair crackle with a thousand brilliant thoughts while your eyebrows dance a jig. x Sam

Very beautiful and...

Valeria_T, Nov 2021
Very beautiful and detailed tour. I joined the tour with my friend. We felt we were visiting all the city. We enjoyed our guide, discovering more about Harry Potter and Rowling's life. The guide had funny hats and accessories and we took wonderful pictures. We were afraid the tour was too long but we finished it before we realized. I recommend it. :-)

Response from Host, Dec 2021

Yes, it's a long long long tour, a trial for those with walking impediments - infirm: please book either my longer private tours here {8-hour 'Complete Potterhead', or contact me for my 5¼ hour tour for teachers or my short route 2⅓ hour 'Potter Tour'}. The tour is also a trial for preteen attention spans, but if they've read the books a treat too, like giving a child a flagon of Madam Rosmerta's Oak Matured Mead, an adult treat, they might not immediately process as such. BREAKFAST HELPS. Also, I have the shorter Potter Tour, 2⅓ hours. They're impedimented; wee legs right? Essentially smooth-skinned house-elves. It's why the socks go missing all the time. They hoard them. I do like to meld austere stone Edinburgh with the magic of Rowling's imagination. I think she might roll her eyes though. At one point I had a long discussion with my Fred, a pyromaniac friend - naturally, he runs 'Easypyro.com' - on how I could create a firework 'Dark Mark'. The greatest problem was it would be very, very few shots before my tour would be shut down, so I sadly left it. And so I have the costumes, I'm glad you liked them. Thanks for such a kind, surprising review Valeria. Firebolts cruise slower than I speak so it's keenly appreciated. x Sam PS. READ THE CHRISTMAS PIG

Definitely for Harry Potter Buffs! Even enjoyable for someone (me) who has no clue about HP!

KhaiSiang_L, Sep 2021
Sam was very knowledgeble in the tour, and covers lots of ground especially since it was a 4 hr tour! Due to this, you need to be extremely fit to keep up! All in my group were Harry Potter fans except me, but it was nonetheless still enjoyable as the tour spanned a lot of the Old Town as well! Would def recommend for HP fans!

Response from Host, Sep 2021

Cheers Khai, that's a fantastic review, I doubly appreciate your effort because you are/were one of the non-awakened. Yes, I walk too fast, it's an issue occasionally true. But I've bashed my knee glancing off the crags of Hunter's bog whilst brooming yesterday 🤦 maybe a little handicap will make it easier for visitors 👨‍🦽 Nevertheless, this can't be relied upon! I do not seek injury to aid my tours! The mobility challenged are invited to book a private tour (I have shorter and longer ones), they'll find it less challenging more enjoyable. Thanks for the kind review and your grace, indulging your companions on Edinburgh's longest Harry Potter tour when you're essentially a Squib. A very fine Squib indeed, I salute you 🎖️ May your adventures be worthy of radiant Lockhart and your home as comfy as Hagrid's hut. x Sam

Tour guide/Edinburgh

Jamille_M, Jul 2021
Sam, the tour guide seems to never run out of energy during the tour. We booked this tour without expecting much. We didn't come prepared and we dont know much about JK Rowling, just some general information about Harry Potter though. 😅 We can say that Sam really knows what he’s talking about. He is informative and flexible to foreigners like us. We were able to go to some unique places that you cant just find on some blogs. We tried that Cranachan that he suggested after the tour, and we loved it.

Response from Host, Jul 2021

Ah fantastic, yes Cranachan is a treat. I'm pleased you enjoyed our tour and you chanced me. Having low expectations probably does help, I wish I could sell it as 'the worst, most heinously dreadful Harry Potter tour' but sadly Viator won't let me. Dunno why. My fear with younger pre-teens like yours is it's a real long time to be listening for, so I was pleased it did OK for you guys. Thanks for reviewing twice, you are my Gilderoy Lockhart (idol). x Sam

Writing of Harry Potter walking tour of Edinburgh

Mary_B, Dec 2020
Sam was amazing, very informative, knowledgeable and friendly. He kept us entertained throughout the tour. The weather wasn’t great, but that didn’t spoil the experience.

Response from Host, Dec 2020

Cheers Mary, yes it's a long long tour in the cold but you came very well prepared. Esikmo coats, full finger gloves, water resistant shoes, umbrella. It's meant to be a cold snowy winter for Scotland this year so you & Jess ought to be role models. RE: informative, cheers! I've been ramping up my knowledge for a few years, switching some amount out, looking for what might be useful to folk, or what might be more enjoyable. I'm pleased you chose me, all these reviews, you're a blessing. May your cauldron never crack and your owl never tire x Sam

Harry Potter Walking tour.

June_S, Oct 2020
Very knowledgable and enthusiastic guide who gave lots of info at every point. You get to see areas tucked away from main tourist areas and items relevant to HP. Fun and worth the price.

Response from Host, Oct 2020

Cheers June, yes I occasionally have enjoyed reading biographies - Rowling does too, she was fascinated by the Mitford sisters and the Kennedys - so it's neat that I have a job where I can read up and spout on Britain's most remarkable woman. Thanks for thinking different and employing me. I will maybe collapse onto Universal Credit over winter. So if you think work should pay, not sponging - go with the little local businesses like June. Work pays when you patronise locals. Patronising locals also pisses off the bullies in the multi-nationals; they're poor & want to pull others down to their level. BONUS! May your adventures be worthy of radiant Lockhart and your home as comfy as Hagrid's hut. x Sam.

Harry potter tour

Varganna_T, Jul 2019
Our guide Sam had really put some toughts in to the tour. We got to become wisards for a day. He showed us lots of places of interest. And to top it all we got candy and icecream.

Response from Host, Sep 2019

Thanks for the kind review! Yes I strive to be the comprehensive luxury tour, where you don't want for anything at the end. This summer Scotland's smallest ice cream parlour even offered Butterscotch (butterbeer) ice cream! It was dreamy. Getting too cold for it now though. I'm so glad you enjoyed it, thanks for taking the time to review. Every review means more than you can imagine, it set me up for a wonderful summer. x Sam.

Absolutely fantastic guide!

Murrin_M, Jun 2019
We had such a great time on this tour. I don't remember our tour guides name, but we went on 30/05/19. He was so professional and knowledgeable. I chose this tour so we could see more of Edinburgh as well as learn about Harry Potter. It definitely did not disappoint! If I could change anything I would have done this on the first day of our visit instead of the last so that we could know more about the city. I would definitely recommend!

Response from Host, Sep 2019

This is fantastic feedback, I might change the tour's values on my website to 'see more, do more, learn more'. I think a common hesitation over my tour maybe that 'will 3.5 hours on Harry Potter be booooring?' So I'm pleased it didn't dissappoint. I had a great summer, thanks to kind reviewers like you. Thanks Cosmo x Sam.

Interesting and fun

Joe_N, May 2019
I booked this tour because it sounded like it would be fun and cover a lot of ground...and it was! Sam made it interesting and interactive. I was disappointed when the ice cream vendor was closed, but the weather had something to do with that. Sam talks pretty fast so just ask him to slow down. We really enjoyed the tour!

Response from Host, Sep 2019

Yes, I speak too fast too often. I took your feedback and made the tour longer, about 3.75 hours over summer to reduce my speed. I'm rolling the length back now, going to cut like I'm a crazed barbers. Barbatrix - like Bellatrix but scissored. Yeah bloomin' ice cream vendors eh? Grrr. Thanks so much for the review x Sam.
