We joined José’s walking was a real highlight. A former Coimbra University student, José brought the city and its traditions to life with stories that mixed history, culture, and his own student experiences, making it all feel very human and real.
He also introduced us to Coimbra Fado, a more soulful, less melancholy version of Portugal’s traditional fado, unique to the city.
We wandered through Coimbra’s steep hills and narrow streets, ending in the peaceful Botanic Gardens (which made us very happy!). Before we parted ways, José even gave us a great local tip on where to try roast suckling pig. Lunch sorted.
Highly recommend if you want to see the real Coimbra through local eyes.

Jose was a fantastic guide! So knowledgeable, with a great energy and sense of humor. He shared stories and information that everyone on the tour — from kids to seniors — could appreciate. We covered all of the main sites at a steady pace, stopping for photos along the way. Also gave a lot of valuable recommendations for restaurants and other sites to visit.

A very comprehensive tour of the Coimbra city center! Jose was a fantastic guide, with so much insight into the history of Coimbra. There is quite a bit of walking, with steep hills, but Jose takes his time and makes it very enjoyable. Highly recommend!!

This was a fantastic way to spend a few hours. The tour guide was incredibly informative, and clearly knows and loves his city. The group was small, allowing for conversation and deviation. Jose gave practical tips (restaurants etc) as well as a good grounding in the history and interests of Coimbra. I highly recommend it.

José was a fantastic tour guide! he showed us so many amazing things giving us a great overview of the city; interesting history, good views, and fun facts all delivered with a good sense of humor. After the tour ended He gave us a typed handout with things we could continue to do later in the afternoon by ourselves, my favorite recommendation was A cozinha da Maria’s for lunch of traditional goat stew! I’ve noted some controversy of people complaining that it was a free tour and that when you do it through Viator or you have to pay. Just to clarify on that, you do pay through Viator, but José absolved us of the to give him a tip because we paid through Viator and other people had not paid, but the tour was so good we gave him an additional tip because it was well worth it! This is the third walking tour we’ve done on our Portugal vacation, and it’s unanimous my husband and I said he was the best tour guide yet! You should definitely do it!

Unfortunately due to illness, we had to cancel our tour at the last minute. So while we didn’t get to go on the tour, I wanted to add a review to complement how helpful our guide, José, was. He messaged us a couple of times ahead of time to send meeting details & reconfirm. Then when we ended up canceling last minute, he still gave us a list of sights to see in Coimbra. If his professionalism & kindness is any indication of his tour, I’m certain it would’ve been great! Id highly recommend.

Our guide José was exceptionally good! Very funny and informed, available for questions. We did the highlights tour and felt like we really visited the majority of the city and were very happy due to our limited time in coimbra. He also gives you a brochure and many tips during the tour about places to visit or to eat etc. Very cute the photo in the end all together. The visit is not rushed and the guide gives you time to climb the hills. One of the best walking tours we did, we suggest that everyone goes!

Jose was a wealth of knowledge and shared a ton of historical information about Coimbra. He kept us entertained so we didn’t think about the many steps to get up to the university 🙂. I would highly recommended his tour to anyone visiting the area.

We really liked the tour itself. José was very good as a guide. But - Viator failed to mention that this was a FREE walking tour, for which they charged 3€/person! Had we realized this, we would have signed up for the exact same tour on the Coimbrawalkingtours website!

The tour has participants coming from different platforms with different business models. Otherwise it wouldn't be possible to run the tour in the low season.
At the end of the tour, I always make sure to point out that participants who have already paid a predefined amount don't have to give any kind of additional tip as they have already paid the agreed amount.
The amount I set for this platform is below what participants usually give as a gratuity precisely so that they don't feel that they could have done the same tour for less money.
I'm sorry that this has affected your perception of the quality of the tour, but otherwise it wouldn't have been possible to offer the tour at all.
