This tour was advertised on Viator as a tour size of 15, and that is the reason I booked this one. Instead the tour had 50 people on a big bus. The tour took 15 hours of which 10 was on the bus.
Our guide was very nice, but had somewhat limited English. Most of the tour was Spanish speakers and he spoke to them most of the time. We left the group, with permission, and wandered Chichen Itza by ourselves because we knew with a group of 50, and most of the explanation being in Spanish we would just be frustrated.
The tour advertisement gave the impression we would observe the equinox effect on the pyramid, but we left before it occured.
The tour was a disappointment. I felt it was a bait and switch.

The tour included too much shopping. We stayed for about three hours in a Mayan village, and half of the time was for us to shop at this tiny over-priced market. They asked $20 (US dollars) for a magnet. And the other half was for a buffet lunch and Cenote swimming. Then we only got to spend half an hour in Valladolid, so the only place we got to see was the little plaza with small vendors and shops around. And if you don't speak Spanish, be careful. The tour was advertised as English and Spanish speaking, but for most of the trip, the tour guide speaks Spanish for 30 minutes and English for less than 1 minute. Luckily, after repeated complain, for the Chichen Itza portion, he found a separate tour guide for the English speakers only, which was great. My three-star rating was mainly for that part of the tour.

If we were only reviewing the guides and experiences on the tour this would be a 5 star review. Our guides were great, helpful, funny and friendly and really went the extra mile. BUT....
We'd asked for a local collection but received no response. Having shelled out for a hotel room so we could meet the tour in Playa del Carmen, we discovered that a number of our fellow travellers had been collected from where we were staying and the lovely driver and guides dropped us there on the way back.
We booked the whole package but the local tour operator had us down as reduced package. Therefore they had no breakfast on board for us. At one point we had to pay an extra 350 pesos each to cover the 'extras' we'd already paid for. Viator then sorted this out but only because the bus had Internet access. It caused great embarrassment not only to us, but to the lovely tour team.
So... The equinox. This tour was a special equinox tour which we specifically booked to, weather permitting, see the light phenomen which occurs each equinox. Sadly, the tour was not timed to coincide with the time of this year's equinox. Whilst we were lucky enough to see the first 10 minutes, we had to be back on the bus at the exact peak of the phenomenon. Particularly disappointing for us as this was the only reason we booked this specific tour which cost extra because it was a 'special' tour.
The monument was outstanding as was the Cenote and the Mayan village. Everyone involved at ground were amazing but there needs to be better communication between Viator and the operators.

Les points positifs:
- L'équipe de la visite (David, William et Juan) était très sympa et attentionnée; David nous a partagé de nombreuses informations sur la culture maya. C'est définitivement le gros point positif de la journée! Merci à eux 3! :)
- Nous avons pu assister au magnifique jeu de lumière sur El Castillo jusqu'au bout. C'était beau!
- Les boissons tout au long de la journée. C'est une région chaude et humide. Les boissons pendant le repas et en illimité dans le bus sont donc bien appréciées.
Les points négatifs :
- Le programme de la journée diffère de ce qui est annoncé sur 2 points :
1-Le cenote n'était pas mentionné, nous n'avions donc pas notre maillot de bain! Dommage car il était magnifique et nous avons découvert sur place qu'une serviette était incluse dans notre package!
2-À l'inverse, le programme mentionne une cérémonie de purification maya que nous n'avons pas eue!! J'étais déçue car c'est définitivement l'un des 2 points qui ont motivé mon choix pour acheter ce circuit, qui est plus cher que les circuits deluxe réguliers!
- L'incitation à la vente est très forte! Avant d'accéder au cenote/restaurant, par exemple, nous attendons longtemps dans un magasin où nous sommes approchés et suivis dès que nous regardons un article de plus près. Les prix annoncés sont plus élevés dans le village maya (ex : 700 pesos contre 400 sur la route pour un bracelet d'obsidienne), mais très vites baissés (de 700 à 500), sans avoir cherché à marchander. Personnellement, ça a coupé net mon envie d'acheter. Je trouve ça dommage que ce soit notre seule interaction avec la très belle communauté maya.
- Le temps passé à Valladolid est très court (20 minutes), juste le temps de faire le tour de la place. C'est dommage car c'est très joli! Avoir plus de temps dans le village et un peu moins à attendre dans les boutiques serait super.
- Dernier point : le lieu de rendez-vous. Coco Bongo est rempli de monde le matin et il est difficile d'identifier notre guide / destination. Nous avons passé 15 minutes à aborder tous les guides avant de trouver le nôtre et d'être accompagnés au bus, qui était seul donc facilement repérable sur la Quinta Avenida. Une pancarte tenue en hauteur serait la bienvenue. Ou, mieux, donner l'emplacement du bus comme lieu de rendez-vous.
