Worth It, But Not Cheap! Chichen Itza Tour Review

Keenan_J, Apr 2026
Brilliant experience well communicated and well thought out. A little confusing at times when they’re speaking both languages (English and Spanish) as sometimes you were listening out to make sure you weren’t missing anything but it’s to be expected when you’re in Mexico hence 5 stars! I did feel like I spent ALOT of money that day after purchasing the tour. For example in the Mayan Village after Tequila tasting I spent £136 on 3 bottles of tequila! Not looked at the quality of them yet. (if I’m able to I will update my review accordingly.) Life Jackets at the Cenote are MANDATORY. You will incur a $10 for 2 people. I ended up paying an extra $2475.20MXN on top of the listed Viator price for two people this charge includes the government tax of $63 USD (each) so total $143 (at current exchange rate) The whole experience was definitely educational I felt I learned a lot about the Mayans, hieroglyphics, numerology and astrology. Ofcourse being ONE of the 7 wonders of the world there are street vendors there. In my experience they will NOT approach you however, you will be told to avoid buying their product on the coach the reasoning will be told to you on the day. Bring sunscreen and water! It is a long day so I got picked up at 7am and got back to my hotel at 9:30pm. It gets very hot! Wear swimwear for the cenote and bring $100mxn for a locker should you use one at the cenote. All round fantastic tour and would recommend to anyone wanting to visit the Chichen Itza!

Bumpy ride Very Old Van

Waqar_A, Feb 2026
The tour bus or I would say the van they arranged was very old with seats ripped and we sat at the very back and felt bumps throughout the way . Our guide was good speaks fluent English. If they had the better van I would have given 5 stars.

Best Experience Ever!

Good value for the cost

Jason_R, Jan 2026
Overall this was a good experience. The shuttle driver was late so we were unsure if we had missed it or what happened but after contacting their rep, we were picked up shortly after. The excursion was very lengthy which was to be expected due to the distances being traveled. Jose & Carlos were great and we learned a fair bit more about the Mayan culture through this trip. In total we made 4 stops and never felt rushed to get back on the bus. Overall we had a good experience.

Great Way to See One of the Seven Wonders

Andy_C, Nov 2025
Overall it was a great trip! Our guide, Nisa, was extremely knowledgeable and informative and fun! The itinerary actually starts at Valladolid, then goes the Cenote, then stops at a Mayan community (where lunch is served), and then ends at Chichen Itza. Our only recommendations for other travelers would be to bring extra cash (pesos preferred) for the stop in Valladolid (shops, food, etc.), and to pay for the vest rental ($5 USD) and the locker rental, at the Cenote. Also, remember to bring your own towel for the Cenote, or you can rent one for a small fee. And bring water shoes for the walk down to the Cenote because it is basically a cobblestone path. At the Mayan community, you will have the opportunity to purchase genuine, handmade Mayan artisanal items, so bring extra money for that as well. Overall it was well worth the time and money and we enjoyed it very much.

This tour was very informative and a great experience overall. Our guide Tony was very knowledgeable and accommodated the groups preference of English and Spanish. The group got to see many interesting facts both as a guided part and also free time for us to venture ourselves. Overall a great experience

The transportation was...

Teresa_W, Sep 2025
The transportation was substandard as we were crammed into a van meant for 10 and there were 15 of us plus the driver. We had a pickup at a different site, and they arrived an hour later while we just sat in the van. The driver and tour guide were very nice knowledgeable and pleasant. The lunch meal wasn't very good. We found a lot of bones in our chicken tacos. Gross! While we made the best of the day. I would say make sure you know exactly what type of transportation you will be in and the time frame of the day.

Tour guides were amazing. Roberto and Gonzalo treated us like family and were extremely kind and funny. They shared an in depth experience of Mayan culture both historically and modern. Learning the social aspects was like no other tour we have taken to Chichen Itza before. Highly recommend this one. It’s worth so much more than what you pay for it.

Response from Host, Oct 2025

Hello Joseph, Thank you so much for your kind words! We’re thrilled to hear that Roberto and Gonzalo made you feel like part of the family and provided such an in-depth and memorable experience of Mayan culture. Excellent day out

Melanie_K, Jun 2025
We had an amazing day. Our guide was brilliant. We were picked up as arranged on the Rd by the hotel. Our first stop was the town of Valladolid. We had half hr there which was fine to have a look about and an ice cream. 2nd stop was the Mayan culture centre, where we learnt a bit about Mayan life. Our guide had tought us a few works and how to count in Mayan. There was a shop there selling products made locally. No pressure to buy. The buffet lunch was also served there. Traditional Mexican food. It was nice. Also had vegetarian options. Next stop Chitzen Itza. We had 2 hrs there which was plenty to see everything. We were in very quickly, not waiting around at all. Our guide showed us around for an hr telling us lots of information. We then had an hr to look about. Wear sun protection and bring a hat! Next stop the cenote which was brilliant. We just had to pay for the lifejacket and locker. We had an hr there. We got back to the hotel at 8pm.

Guide spoke mainly in Spanish and when he spoke English it was difficult to understand. Bus had poor ac and was in not a first class bus prompt pickup, good food, guide at chicken itza was excellent ,tour driver was excellent all together it was a fabulous experience

Yuya_S, Feb 2025
I had an archaeologist guide who is professionally has so much knowledge about Maya. We learned so much and he was funny. We had really good time! The bus was so packed that my friend and I couldn’t seat next each other, that was the only bummer part.

Could do better

Sukhdeep_M, Feb 2025
Pick up was on time but a lot of time was spent joining up with other pick ups before heading out for the day. There was a lot of talk of "Mayan culture" which seemed to be a prelude to introducing us to expensive gifts ranging from calendars to obsidian carvings. Lunch was terrible!!! Damp tortillas, plain rice, boiled bland vegetables. The center experience was great but we weren't told up front about the need to purchase tickets for lockers at the entrance! Chichen Itza was great although I didn't understand the restriction on taking in sunblock! Valladolid was a nice stop but 30 mins isn't enough. Not enough information on the time of our drop offs - our day was well over 13h which meant we were very late for the hotel restaurants.

Francisco was a great guide!

Maya_T, Feb 2025
The trip was great, the cenote was amazing and we had lots of time at chichen itza to take photos and go around

Unforgettable experience

Tandrima_B, Nov 2024
At Chichen itza when we arrived and guide told us history and showed us places . How ever on the way back from Chitchen itza to go to cenetoes I experienced very rude behavior from guide when I approached him that I have to leave as the time table not matching that I had been told during booking

Chichen Itza is Amazing

Jeffrey_D, Oct 2024
Our guides were very friendly, knowledgeable, and interactive with the guests, which made the long day more manageable. I would have preferred a tour that went just to Chichen Itza, but for some reason, those tours were hundreds of dollars more. The cenote and the city tour were just ok. Skip the box lunch and bring some snacks or a box lunch from your resort and you will be better off. For the price, it was worth the trip but just filling you in on my preferences. I would recommend it.

Response from Host, Nov 2024

Not well organized - tour less than what we expected

skovel, Oct 2024
Despite the tour team being very nice and charismatic, we would not recommend this tour. From the start of the day where we spent over an hour in a Starbucks while the tour company tried to organize themselves, to the constant badgering for us to spend money anywhere they recommended, to the terrible lunch they offered (anything that could be made cheaply), it was an unpleasant experience. We were really excited to tour the Chichan Itzá site but the guide merely repeated what was said on the bus and only took us the the main bit and didn’t even tell us about the additional ruins that are a mere 5 minute walk farther. Our group was extremely large and there were multiple screaming children. In fairness, others in the group seemed to be having a better time than us.

The tour did not start...

Tracey_J, Jul 2024
The tour did not start off on the right foot for us. Unfortunately there was a lot of confusion about our pick up time. I originally booked with a start time of 7:30am, which we wanted and preferred. Then we were contacted by the tour operator that our pick up time would be 9:15am. However, we kept getting emails with BOTH pick-up times and that was confusing. So my husband chatted with Viator on their Whats App the night before and that Viator representative said there must have been a mistake and to be at the pick up spot at 7:30am. We were there and 7:30am came and went. Then the time changed from 9:15am to 9:30am. We were picked up by a Van that then transported us to our bus. We did the upgraded Breakfast box, but the bread was stale and it was a ham sandwich so we did not eat it. Also, we were told that we wouldn't be picked up at the Main Lobby, that we needed to make our way to the front gate. We were at an ocean front resort and the gate is a long way away. I was surprised that they didn't come to get us at the lobby. I will say Thankfully they did drop us off at the lobby. The highlights of the tour was the tour guide Victor, he and his group did do a great job of educating us and they were friendly. There was a lot of talking on the bus but if you want to sleep I recommend using your headphones, earbuds. If you like knowing the history then you will love the info. The Saamal Cenote was beautiful and I would have preferred to have eaten there. I was not pleased with the buffet that we ate at though. The main event of seeing Chichen Itza was wonderful and we enjoyed seeing all of the historical ruins. I would recommend to my friends and family to book a shorter tour or to rent a car and go there themselves. Now that we know what we know that is what we will do next time. I was happy that we did get the unlimited beverages though as we drank a ton of water and they did provide us with that as well as offering beer, soda and even some tequila at the end of the night.

Spent more time on the bus than experiencing the locations.

Luz_D, Jul 2024
WIe were picked up then dropped off at a store to make a long line then wait for another bus. We thought we started our trip but then made about 4-5 more stops to pick up additional people. It was allot of driving that did not only include the drive to the locations. Not very organized. The locations were beautiful and one of our tour guides was very knowledgeable

13 hours of vacation wasted for 2 great hours in Chichen Itza

josh_f, Jul 2024
This tour is a complete rip-off and waste of most of a day. We only had 2 hours at Chichen Itza because we wasted 2 hours in a shanty town hearing BS about local culture and obsidian, eating a marginal buffet and standing around in a horrible gift shop. The stop in Valladolid was also a waste of time b/c we circled the square 2 times before we got off, then had less than 20 minutes to do anything before right back on the bus. We got picked up at 7:05a and then wasted over an hour sitting in a Starbucks waiting for everyone else....we didn't get on the road until close to 9am. Also a huge waste of my time on vacation. Chichen Itza is amazing and we had a great guide there. The Cenote was fun. It would be nice if you could find a Chichen Itza trip that maximized the time there and didn't waste half the day on other stops that offer no value whatsoever.

So-so

Amel_A, Jan 2024
Victor our tour guide on the bus was amazing, he deserves 100 stars! But overall the process was long and required lots of driving and waiting. The initial time I thought it would take was much longer and the stops were very touristy. We didn't get to stop in the town either. Overall, was not impressed based on the price.

Response from Host, Jan 2024

Hello Amel! We are glad to hear that your guide Victor was amazing. We would also like to thank you for your comments. The archaeological site of Chichen Itza is a bit far away from where your pick up took place, but we try to make sure that you can visit the most important points. Your comments help us to improve our services. Have a nice day!

Too much sales pitching!

DANNY_W, Dec 2023
Tour was good. Loved the time given at the pyramids and the information provided. I'm used to tour groups giving a sales pitch, but this was particularly long and brutal. 45 minute speech selling modern day Obsidian stones (read: snake oil) when rubbed on your head will cure your insomnia and headaches. Then on the bus there was a second sales pitch for liquor. The hard and persistent sales pitches really detracted from a the tour.

Response from Host, Jan 2024

Hello Danny! We are glad that your tour was good. And that you enjoyed the information provided by our guides and the pyramids. During the tour support is given to local vendors, we are sorry that it was a problem for you. We appreciate your understanding, have a nice day.
