We had a great tour with Marti! He is a great character, with lots of experience and knowledge of the area!! He has a unique style which we really appreciated and it made it a very memorable and special experience! Thanks Marti!

We were fortunate to be partnered with our tour guide Marty who has so much knowledge and passion for Belfast he made our tour really interesting- we would definitely recommend this tour if you want to hear about not only the troubles but how Belfast is leading the way with some fantastic community projects - definitely wear comfy shoes though as there is a lot of walking but well worth it!
Response from Host, Oct 2025
Thank you and I'm happy to read you found our wee dander (as we say here) interesting. And thank you for recommending this walking tour. And that you enjoyed hearing about the community projects that will help us recover from those times. And yes comfy shoes are always a good idea on this valued experience.

The tour guide is very knowledgeable but also opinionated. Had the annoying and awkward habit of challenging the group with, “What do you know about…” acting like we were imbeciles. If I knew everything about the Troubles I wouldn’t be taking the tour!
Response from Host, Jun 2025
Thank you for you option of this very difficult subject. In asking 'What do you know' it was not meant to be a question and 3 hours can only ever be an introduction to the troubles
But I do follow up with lots of information to further help visitors to Belfast understand the period known as the troubles better. And the ongoing healing this part of the island is now undergoing
I get all walks of life and mostly visitors who are fascinated by the information I share with them. And mostly visitors who know very little about the troubles. So hopefully the information I sent you will help you learn more

Best guided tour I've done in a while. Marty is very kind and knowledgeable. We've had a great time with my friends.
Response from Host, Jan 2025
Thank you for your kind words. And am happy to read you all enjoyed our time together.
Nicola_W, Oct 2024
The explanation of the complex history of the Island of Ireland, with multiple groups forming and unforming. Descriptions of the most recent events in the last 60 years. The tour leader appeared a bit reluctant to engage with questions. More interaction with the group would have been better. We left before the end of the tour so I can’t comment on the elements we missed.

Thanks for your review. This tour is an adult only tour. And I was surprised you had a minor with you. Too which you replied you where happy to take on the tour. As you say you left the tour early. Commenting it was too much for the minor you had with you. And so you didn't experiece the whole tour. On which i can only ever be an introduction to the subject. I did send you further information. Which you say you where most happy with. Thank you for taking the time to leave your views.

Marti provides an excellent overview of the nuances other considerations of the history of Belfast during, in particular, the las century. Walking in the areas of the Peace Wall and other community gathering places, it was easier to see the Belfast of today vs that of years in the past. A very interesting tour!

Thank you I do my best to give visitors to Belfast a better understanding of Belfast and give you all a different view to the one you have only heard of from books and media coverage. Going into those areas you get a real feel for what it's like now and the stories I share hopefully help you get a better understanding of it all. A city under huge change now set to help it's people heal and better understand the world around it as it looks forward not forgetting it's past. And hope you'll return some day to visit the new Belfast Stories exhibit I told you all about.

We did this tour yesterday and firstly, we must give Marti credit for his knowledge on the troubles dating way back to 5-8000 bc. He is sure knowledgable! The tour felt like a school field trip as we were hit with a plethora of information from beginning to end. Questions are not always welcomed as the guide was quite rude to a lady in our group when asked about one of the many facts that we were given. This was within the first 10 minutes of the tour which sort of lost all of our full attention for the next 3 hours. The vast majority of the tour was really good, as previously mentioned! If you want a lot of information and a personal/historical view on the troubles, then definitely go with Marti, however other members of the tour with whom we stayed with after the tour had finished, felt Marti was rude and there was another issue with a local due to some comments he made out loud about the area of Shankill road… awkward.
All in all I think it was a decent tour, but on this occasion there were too many awkward moments… all due to the guide and his manner! The three stars are for his knowledge alone!

Thank you for your constructive review. I do my best to tell a series of stories that help not only locals but visitors to the troublesome areas of Belfast we go into better understand the conflict that has taken place here over many centuries as you say. At times I get difficult questions I have to coup with, which I do to the best of my ability. And on most occasions my guests appreciate the realistic feel I give them of the conflict and convey the facts like the three generations of healing the people are now going through. With an ever changing world around them. And the hopes they have for the next generation, and the enviorment around them. I have taken groups of University students, Politicians and individuals who where involved in the conflict in those areas on walking tours and they all thank me some by leaving reviews and others personnelly as I've helped them better understand the Belfast of today and yesteryear. A city now going through a period of healing, at a new beginning telling it Belfast Stories. Which I know I shared with you as we pasted the site of the new attraction that will help heal and better help visitors and tourists better understand our past, present and future. Thank you and hope you'll visit it by the time it opens in 2030. But for now I'll continue to share the story of peace and what it takes to maintain that 🙏

Marty offers unique tours. He keeps the group small.
He is very knowledgeable and will try his best for you to learn as much as you can. For me it was too much information in little time but this is personal because some people prefer it that way.
His English accent is clear. Easy to understand.
You need to keep pace with him not to miss anything he says. Be aware he doesn’t use a microphone like other guides do.
He walks fast. Think if you would also be able to walk fast.
We walked a bit more than 6km in 3h.
He loves teaching and showing, and will do extra time if needed. He did extra time with us. Thank you.
Winny_T, Jun 2024
Marti explained to us the complex history of Belfast, so we could understand the present. We saw great streetart , not only the political ones. We visited both sides and Marti was neutral in his comment.
Response from Host, Jul 2024
Thank you I do my best to explain the complex nature of the period known as the troubles. And yes we see ot only the political murals but a mix of Street Art and community Murals that help in the healing process we are now going through. After those troublesome times. Thanks for taking the time you leave me your review.
Felicitas_G, Jun 2024
Marti was really knowledgeable and provided with interesting information. Not only he told us about the beginning of the troubles but also, about the healing process and life in Belfast nowadays. He also gave us good advice for our stay in Belfast.
Great way to get to know the history of a city .
Mark_B, May 2024
Our guide Marty was superb. Extremely knowledgeable and was happy to answer every question thrown his way. A lot of information to take in but it gave us a better understanding of the conflict and reasons behind it.
Andrew_B, Apr 2024
We really enjoyed our walking tour, Marti is a great guide! He explained the history behind the troubles at the start of the walk giving us a good insight into more recent events. We felt that he gave a very balanced view and was keen to stress that the majority of people are keen to work towards a more harmonious way of living. Being on foot (rather than in a cab) to see the murals certainly gave us a better feel of the area. We would definitely recommend this tour.
Natalie_J, Apr 2024
We had an educating time on our tour. Despite rain we still made it around the entire city learning about the experiences of the communities through their art. Marti placed such an amazing emphasis on peace throughout the tour, and something that impacted us the most was his remark that it takes three generations to overcome trauma. You can see that the trauma of past generations still exists in Belfast, but through these murals and peace efforts of people like Marti the journey to recovery is just as evident. Don't miss this tour on your trip to Belfast!
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Yeah it will take time to heal the wounds here. At least 3 generations to heal what was a complex situation here. That I hope you have a better understanding of it now. And yes through the medium of Street/Art and Murals we continue to share with all those including those who didnt live through the period you know as the troubles... I can only ever be an introduction. I thank you for your kind words. We are all here, working to make a better World for the next generation.
Alexander_C, Apr 2024
We learnt a lot from Marty. He is a true local & has a lot of knowledge to share. A great afternoon.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank You happy to read you found our time together interesting. And as a local. Like to help you find the Belfast you seek 😉

A fantastic walking tour. Marty was a top guide and very knowledgeable on this fascinating city. Highly recommend this tour!
Response from Host, Nov 2023
I thank you and I'm happy to hear I helped you understand Belfast better. A city that still has a lot of healing to do.
SUSAN_D, Sep 2023
Marty’s walking tour of Belfast Political Murals Street Art and Peace Wall is unique and not for the faint of heart. However, if you want to learn about the lived experience of the people of Belfast during the post 1960s civil and political unrest (The Troubles/Na Trioblóidí) as well as the current and future hopes for the city, then this is the tour for you. You will come away from this tour with a deeper understanding of Belfast and Northern Ireland Conflict. You’d also be hard pressed to find a bigger booster for the city today.
This walking tour is akin to a one-man show where for over three hours Marty shares his historical and personal knowledge. He uses the murals as touchstones for telling the story of how generations of people survived violent political conflict over the years and continue to work to establish a lasting peace and a better future. Marty offers an unforgettable lesson for those who know little about the conflict as well as those who have studied it a great deal. He stresses how complicated the history is, with a focus on the suffering of the ordinary working people. At the same time he gives a lot of himself in sharing his personal experience as a Belfast native. It is not superficial: there is real heart and humanity in this tour.
There were only five of us with Marty, who prefers to walk with small groups in order to respect the people whose neighborhoods you are walking through. Be prepared to walk briskly and cover a number of miles. If you are up for the challenge you will not regret signing up for this tour.

Marti knew the history of NI right back to several years BC. He was extremely knowledgeable and interesting. He took us all over to city to places we would never have gone without a guide and gave us the real story behind NI. He explained the murals and what they meant. Would highly recommend - wear good walking shoes!
Response from Host, Sep 2023
Thank you and happy to hear you enjoyed hearing about the period known as the troubles, as we discovered Street Art or sometimes known as Political Murals. In the West of the city. From all three sides. And yes a great way of doing so on foot.
Georgia_H, Nov 2022
We had such an in depth tour - really pleased to find a neutral & respectful tour that offered so much historical & local knowledge. Loved seeing the street art and visiting all across the city to gain a real community insight. It sparked our minds to learn more about Northern Ireland. Such a kind-hearted tour guide! Thanks so much!
Response from Host, Nov 2022
Hi and thanks for leaving such an inspiring review. Which will help me keep going with this insightful experience of the local troubled History. Told through the eyes of the incredible street art we saw, by both local and international street artists. Thank you for your kind words. And I'm pleased to hear it has given you the incouragment to learn more about this very special community which still has some way to go to heal.
Judy_R, Aug 2022
The tour was very interesting, tour operator definitely knew his history . It was a bluebird day with the sunshine
Response from Host, Sep 2022
Thank you Happy to hear you enjoyed our time together. On what a slitly more uplifting view through Street Art of the passage of time now known as the troubles. And as you know we covered a whole lot more.
Michael_L, Aug 2022
Excellent guide. Brought real insight to past and present artistic and political situation in Belfast. Covered a lot of ground
Response from Host, Aug 2022
Thanks, I do my best to share the time line of our troubled past. And the Political Murals and Street Art that we see is a great medium to help me achieve that. While we pass through areas from those times. Thanks for taking the time to leave me this encouraging review.
Matthew_H, Jul 2022
Marty was wonderful. He was a truly great guide; knowledgeable, generous, a great storyteller, and spoke from personal experiences. Highly recommend.
Response from Host, Jul 2022
Thank you for your review. And always happy to hear my guest say they enjoyed one of my walking tours. It was a pleasure showing a little of this great wee city. And hope to see you again sometime on another adventure along the Marti Way 😀
Katie_W, Jul 2022
100% recommend this tour whilst in Belfast. Walking allowed us to see so much more of the city and the street art. Marti was a great tour guide, really went into depth and gave a great overview of the troubles without any bias.
Response from Host, Jul 2022
Why Thank you. I find a great way of understanding the troubles, is to explain them through the street art. Once I've given you an over view of those times. Thanks for your review it's much appreciated.
Joke_M, Jun 2024
Response from Host, Jun 2024
