It was the most amazing trip we ever had! Wonderful place, great tourguide, we felt super informed about the trip, and the most beautiful hike ☀️ The biggest recommendations!

Guide Henry is well versed in English. He and the local guides were nice, kept a steady pace, plenty of breaks, and made sure everyone was okay. Would recommend going with OX Expeditions.

Tyler was absolutely amazing, very thorough, knowledgeable, personable and made the experience great. Absolutely recommend any tour with him. He prioritizes your safety and having a great experience.

I did the overnight Acatenango hike with Ox Expeditions and was really impressed with how well organised everything was. The welcome briefing the night before is absolutely essential—it gives you a clear idea of what to expect and how demanding the hike truly is. One thing I really appreciated was that they offer lots of warm clothing to hire for free, which meant I didn’t have to pack bulky layers in my own bag.
I would strongly recommend hiring a porter for the ascent (for an additional charge). The hike is steep, long and genuinely difficult, and having someone carry your main bag makes a huge difference. Be prepared for very cold temperatures at base camp. Food is provided and perfectly fine for the conditions, but the campsite itself is very basic.
It’s also worth knowing that you’re not guaranteed dramatic views or a clear sight of Fuego erupting—weather and cloud cover can change quickly. Even so, the experience is absolutely worth it. Reaching the top and spending the night on the volcano is something I’ll never forget.

Great activity for solo traveling.. plenty of solo travelers from all over the world. Definitely not the easiest hike but it’s well worth it.

The hike to base camp is hard but totally worth it. Once we got to the base camp, the view was blocked by clouds but weather changes so fast and could see and hear the volcano. It is so impressive! The hike to Fuego is even harder and you will come back at night, but what an experience! It is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. I didn’t go to the summit in the morning because I was too tired.
The service itself was incredible. Axel, Leo, Lily and 2 other local guides were very careful, kind and professional. Such a good team. We felt safe and cared for at all times. They cooked for us and organized everything so well.
Definitely take the free gear they have to climb and rent hiking sticks.
Oh, and loooots of dogs to pet on the way 😍
Muchas gracias, it will stick with me my whole life.

Amazing experience! Wonderful people and really an incredibly beautiful experience! The food was good too, and we even had marshmellows in the evening!
Its a tough hike, so don’t overestimate yourself!

I did the Acatenango Volcano Tour and it was an unforgettable experience! I’m not a professional hiker, but the team made everything very well organized and safe. The guides were supportive and encouraging throughout the hike, and the whole tour was perfectly arranged. Watching the volcano was absolutely breathtaking — truly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Highly recommended!

I can’t say enough great things about OX. Absolutely wonderful staff. Before during and after the climb. The entire experience was amazing, gruelling climb albeit but that’s on my fitness level. However, the guides, porters and puppy dogs were the shinning light who helped and encouraged me throughout. I really did read every bad comment to be very realistic about my ability. I didn’t want to hold the group up or not be able to make it. Some of things people said simply weren’t my experience at all. I will say, if you are average and not overly “fit” it is a very hard climb, and our active climbers did use porters after the first leg. The reward is incredible! Campfire, shots of rum, wonderful meals, some laughs and new friendships. Amazing group of humans, OX and my group. You got this! Slow and steady!

Henry was our amazing tour guide! He kept a steady pace for the whole group, looked out for everyone and kept us entertained the whole way, thank you Henry!
Marit_T, Aug 2025
We were truly amazed by the quality of this trip. The guides really went out of their way to make it an unforgettable experience for everyone. The instructions given the day before were clear and helpful, the equipment they provided for us to borrow was of good quality, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was fantastic. Highly recommended!

It was difficult but beautiful! The final summit to the top was extremely cold and windy and rainy. Bring nice gloves and wear proper hiking shoes and appropriate socks!
Mil_O, Aug 2025
Amazing experience, a really good vibe in the group and really nice to climb the mountain. Although the fuego wasn’t errupting as we expected, it was still worth it and still the highlight of our vacation. The guide was very nice and realistic, he made sure everyone made it to the summit safely and he was honest when it wasn’t safe. For example: when the weather was too bad, you couldn’t see anything or when he noticed you couldn’t keep up with the group due to your physical condition, you had to stay down for safety reasons. Your physical condition doesn’t need to be on point, any average person can reach the summit. Also the company is very professional and climate friendly and it has its own challenges for the people who like to take it to the next level. Overall great experience, would recommend to do it with OX expeditions.
Jamie_D, Jul 2025
Absolutely incredible experience. The hike is very challenging, especially if you don’t want a porter to carry your luggage, but it is worth it. The views are amazing and we were looked after extremely well.
Alexis_H, May 2025
I enjoyed the experience. Went at a good pace and the guide took good care of us.
I’d recommend getting a porter and definitely poles if you plan to do fuego. If you want my honest opinion—- fuego not worth it. It felt unsafe (the wind/rain weather is intense up there plus it is a very active volcano) do your research and decide. The best views of fuego were from camp at night

I didn't complete the tour with OX Expeditions. The hiking was a little too much for me so I told my tour guide that I would go back down. On my way down, I saw some people going up by horse. I stopped them and asked how much they paid, and which company offers transportation by horse. I found the tour company. One of their men was going to take me up to the OX's base camp by horse. Since I had already paid OX, I thought they would let me use their campsite, but they said no. I called my tour guide a few times, but he didn’t answer my calls; another OX tour guide talked to him and told me he said no. They said their company doesn’t allow using horses. I was not asking them to take me up there by horse; someone else would. I just wanted to use the camp since I had already paid to OX. They said it's illegal to use horses. Well, there are other companies using horses, and I looked it up and didn't find anything about illegal to use horses. They said they were responsible for my safety, but they had no problem letting walking back down by myself. I knew it would be challenging to hike up there, and was going to take my time hiking up, but the tour guide said he could only wait a few minutes for me; he had other people to look after. I didn't ask if I could hike up to the base alone; but he let me walk down alone so the answer is, yes? If you are like me and need help getting up to the base camp, don't use OX Expeditions. Be careful picking the tour companies. Not all provide the same services. Know your limits and do research and pick the right company. I missed the opportunity to see the volcano; that was the reason I went to Guatemala and I was so excited and looking forward to it. I had gone up to the mountains several times using horses but I did hike up to 2 different mountains by foot on this trip. The Acatenango is more difficult so using a horse would really help. One OX tour guide said, “I signed up for hiking. That is not true; if it's just hiking, I can do that anywhere. I signed up to see the Acatenango volcano and hiking is one of the ways to get up there and if I can’t why not using horses.
Craig_W, May 2025
Amazing trip. The work is worth it. Use a porter if you’re not use to hiking often and carrying 35lbs doing so. Walking sticks are a must! Sooooo worth it. Axel
And Miguel are the best

I can’t recommend doing this tour with OX expeditions enough. Amazing experience right from the start. The gear they were able to provide was good quality, the food exceeded my expectations and the guide Henry was the best! I did both Fuego and Acatenango for sunrise and well worth the extra hiking. Views are surreal!

One of the most amazing experiences in my life .
A hard hike but a must do once in your life . Don’t be afraid of the unknown, it will take you by surprise
Tamara_W, Feb 2025
What an amazing experience! All the staff were friendly and helpful, the food was delicious, and their base camp was in a great location. The trek was challenging (expectedly!) but well worth it.
Karen_H, Feb 2025
The hike is very demanding, and the right equipment and condition are important with huge rewards for the effort, including the side trip up Fuego for sunset. It was expertly led by Gareth, who struck the right balance as our Guide between the needs of the group and individual members.
Christian_R, Jan 2025
I highly recommend OX expedition for your Acatenango hiking adventure . Our guide are very knowledgeable about the trains and weather condition . It was an experience of a life time to hike volcanoes Acatenango and watch Volcan Fuego spew volcanic lava . I highly recommend!!
Huiyang_H, Jan 2025
Wonderful experience!! It was challenging but manageable. The guides are professional and friendly, so def listen to their advices!
Matt_H, Dec 2024
Incredible experience with incredible guides. Ox was so well organized. The hike is HARD. I strongly recommend acclimating a few days prior and/or taking oxygen pills. There are frequent stops along the way to catch your breath, but even so, it’s nearly all uphill. That said, so worth it.
Rachel_M, Nov 2024
It was an amazing experience- so happy we stayed overnight and it was so active. Guides were great, hike was hard but worth it. Pace yourself if not used to altitude.
Only negative is outhouse is pretty stinky & steep. Steps down would be ideal if added so nighttime usage is easier. Overall highly recommend this company. Warm gear was so convenient.
Neal_K, Nov 2024
Incredible experience. The guides were amazing I would definitely recommend this company and activity. The hike was brutal but so worth it
James_N, Nov 2024
Great tour, really well organised, friendly and experienced guides, nice to meet other solo travellers
Wenxiu_Y, Sep 2024
Felt super grateful to choose ox expeditions in doing this 2D1N hike. It was not in my travel plan so I didn't prepare any hiking gears. Thanks to this thoughtful organisation that get the gear covered in tour package(sleeping bags, top fleece, gloves, hat, headlamp, backpack). Also, the guides especially Henry and Leon, they are patient, helpful and informative. They always check your condition along the trip and thanks a lot for being patient with my pace when getting to the summit. Salute to the porter too for helping me to carry my backpack to the top. Really appreciate it. Last but not least, the awesome funny team that we met in this hiking trip, the crew that clean the cabin and prepared the wine/hot chocolate/pasta/coffee, the absolute amazing views from the ground to the top made this whole journey became one of my most memorable trip in life. Love their ideas in the environmental friendly challenge too. Thanks team. Noted: the hiking sticks are indeed a need in the trip.

PROS: I really loved my experience with OX! I felt taken care of and SAFE, which is the most important thing. The guides felt like they had plenty of experience and always had our experience and safety in mind. The group felt put together and on it.
Some suggestions after my experience:
1. Justice for the slow hikers! I found that once I slowed down I enjoyed my experience a lot more, but often felt rushed by the guides. I rarely had a time to rest (while the rest of the group did) and often felt like I was scrambling to fit everything in once we stopped (drink water, reapply sunscreen, remove/add layers, etc.) it would be nice if the slow hikers got as many chances to rest as those ahead.
2. Somewhat related, but a 1-2 min heads up before we have to leave from a rest would be helpful. I would often be in the middle of something (like applying suncreen) when the guide would yell "let's go!" and I'd be left scrambling even more.
Thank you OX for such a great experience!!

Had to pay $25 USD for the smallest tear that was already there on one of their coats. Would not recommend because of this incident alone.
Hike itself was dope. Find another tour operator.
Response from Host, Oct 2024
Justin, we provide all of our gear for free. We have 4 signs on the way to the gear room, the information provided at the pre-trip meeting and a sign at reception all stating you are simply required to check your gear before you take it on tour(and if there is damage, you can exchange it). If you fail to check your gear and it comes back with damage you will be charged for it. If you did not do the damage, but also failed to check your gear that is an unfortunate situation but it is not without warning. We try to be as transparent about our gear policy as possible. We now have cards we give to each person stating our policy as well as it posted on our TV screen while people wait for the meeting to begin. We are simply trying to maintain the quality of our gear to ensure everyone has good gear to use. It is not a greedy and shady practice, simply one you didnt pay attention to and were held responsible to.
