A once in a lifetime experience sleeping in view of an erupting volcano! The hike up Acatenango was strenuous at first and flattened out at the top, while the optional trip over to Fuego was extremely grueling, mostly because of the loose gravel and the path going straight up the mountain. Going down in the dark after sunset was particularly challenging and slow going. Make sure to wear proper hiking boots! The accommodations at the top were basic. But the whole experience was absolutely worth it! Diego Morales and the crew were really wonderful and friendly. I would highly recommend!

Seeing Fuego was amazing. However, the group had quite a fast pace and didn’t wait for everyone to catch up. And one point we pretty much lost the group and walked with another group for a while from what we gathered from them their group took more frequent breaks so that people could catch up and they also didn’t have to carry all of their meals up meaning that their backpacks were lighter (ours were 16kg). Because our groups’ pace was so fast even the slowest group got up there in about 4.5hrs despite the brochure saying it takes 4-6 hrs (we were amongst the slower ones and did it in precisely 4hrs). The guide and porters were friendly and the meal portions were very generous (we couldn’t finish them).

The hike itself was beautiful, and the company provided all of the necessary gear, which I appreciated. The food and equipment were generally well prepared.
However, I had a very concerning experience with the guides. We were taken onto the wrong route multiple times instead of returning directly to base camp, which added several unnecessary hours of hiking in extremely cold, windy conditions and slippery trail. By the end, I was exhausted, hypothermia, low blood sugar and genuinely concerned for my safety.
Another major issue was the language barrier. This tour is advertised as an English tour, but only one guide could communicate in basic English. During the route confusion, I was trying to explain that we were on the wrong trail and even asked about calling for rescue, but the guide couldn’t understand my English, and I couldn’t understand his Spanish. In a situation where safety is involved, this level of communication is simply not acceptable. I could’ve lost my life over there.
The scenery was incredible, but getting lost in those conditions while being unable to communicate with the guides made the experience stressful and potentially dangerous. I hope the company improves guide training, route planning, and ensures that English-language tours actually have guides who can communicate effectively. This could prevent a serious accident in the future.

Marvin & the entire group of guides were amazing. I had such a wonderful time, the view and the experience is just insane. The accommodation is good too, I was very scared of getting too cold at night but the sleeping bag is very warm.

Arduous hike. Requires heavy, lifting of the baggage all along the way up. Relatively doable by inexperienced people but if you’re not active and you’re over 35 years old I would strongly recommend against doing this without some preparation. Paying for the porters definitely helps. I went during the Rainey summer season and we still got great views but that is apparently a gamble. Lots of extra fees with this company for the bag, for the extra hikes up top, for the poles (which I strongly recommend especially on the way down as they make a bigger difference than the way up). There are cabins for 2 people but most people ended up in cabins of 3-4 just fyi. The fuego hike is particularly intense after a long day hike up the mountain for views that are more or less the same as from your cabin but the only difference is it is closer by a little bit. Another issue to consider is this company starts the hike so late in the day that there really wasn’t a ton of time up in the viewing cabin relaxing or cooking marshmallows before leaving right away.

Make no mistake, this is a challenging hike. If you find longer, uphill hikes difficult, maybe reconsider this experience. I will also say there are Porters available to help carry your bags to make it easier (we did not do this). If you can face the challenge, it is truly an unforgettable experience! Seeing Volcan de Fuego erupt was such an amazing thing to see in person. We chose to do the extra hike for about $35/pp and it was completely worth it. We had pouring rain and lightning as we were hiking up, it was still totally worth it and just made viewing the eruptions more dramatic! Once it cleared, we have multiple hours of eruptions that were so cool to watch. I would completely recommend this to anyone considering it!

We had an amazing experience hiking Acatenango with CA Travelers! Everything was very well organized from start to finish. Marvin, along with all of the local guides and porters, were incredibly helpful throughout the entire hike — always providing clear instructions, support, and making sure we had everything we needed along the way.
The food provided was great, and the housing accommodations were phenomenal — it honestly felt like glamping while being surrounded by incredible volcano views. The setup made the experience much more comfortable and enjoyable after a long hike.
They had sold out of the backpacks we needed to rent, but they quickly helped us find a rental shop in town that was easy to get to and pickup from, which we really appreciated. I also really appreciated learning that the money paid to the porters goes directly toward supporting them, their families, and the local communities. It made the experience feel even more meaningful knowing tourism is helping provide opportunities locally.
Overall, everything went very smoothly, and seeing an active volcano up close was truly the experience of a lifetime. Highly recommend CA Travelers for anyone planning this hike in Guatemala!

I want to start first by thanking Leo for providing an overview of the hike and helping us get to Acatenango while giving us a nice history overview of Guatemala. I had a really hard time hiking up but I am so grateful that we had Lorena, Wilson, Gerson and other porters too, I sincerely couldn’t have done it without them. HUGE HUGE shoutout to Lorena, I was the slowest in my group but she was so patient and caring and so were Wilson and Gerson. Acatenango was not easy but having Lorena by my side truly made a difference, thank you thank you and thank you ❤️. I had David as my porter and he was truly a champ, I truly admire his positivity despite the steep hill he constantly kept a smile on too thank you thank you thank you David!!
Cabins were pretty nice, and the group was wholesome. Despite the hardship there were wonderful memories!!

Amazing, well-organized experience. Marvin was an excellent guide, and the quality of the meals, gear, and cabins exceeded expections!

Really happy with CA travels! The guides were so nice and helpful. I did it on the 29/3 and everyone involved were lovely. Really good price for everything it included, they also support the local community which is very wholesome
Paolo_V, Mar 2026
They were very prepared, excited, and on time! Overall, loved the group we went with and the hike itself was unreal.
Samuel_M, Mar 2026
This trip was certainly a highlight of the time in Guatemala. The guides are friendly and well equipped to take care of the group. The optional hike to Fuego and the sunrise summit hike are well worth it! The .pdf that is provided upon confirmation has all the information one could need to prepare for this hike.
Jakob_S, Mar 2026
Though hike worth the effort. The guides where informative and helpful. Absolutelly recommend this hike.

Great guides!! Best experience!!!! I'll never forget this adventure and will tell about it for the rest of my life.
Jocelyn_C, Feb 2026
This trip was amazing. We were a little underprepared to carry as much in our pack as we did, so I would say pack smart and layer up because it get cold overnight. The guides that went up Acatenango with us were so kind, patient, and tentative. They are really good at what they do and I was just so impressed by the work they do. Highly recommend this tour company.

What a wonderful experience. Challenging but beautiful and memorable. Marvin made sure to make us feel safe and created good vibes 🤙 The food and accommodation was top notch! Only wish we would have started the hike a bit earlier to get some more time at base camp before the Fuego hike ✌️
We traveled as a couple and one of us used payed for a porter to carry the bag to base camp. Based on what I have learned now, unless you feel like having the extra challenge, the money spent for the porters both help them directly and make the hike more comfortable.
I both carried my bag and did Fuego and the sunrise hike, and in hindsight, paying for a porter would have been nice to do. Fuego is truly challenging 🔥
Can't recommend this hike and company enough!
Jacob_B, Jan 2026
Best experience of your life. Insanely difficult hikes, especially if you do Fuego or sunrise but they can be done. Bring tip money for the guides, they deserve it, ours took us off the main trail on these quicker less travelled trails that made the hike less difficult and dusty. Sleeping situation is bunk beds in a tiny room but the beds were really comfy actually and warm plus I didn’t hike a volcano just sleep while it was erupting. Great company, great guides. This company is worth going through for this insane experience
Rodion_I, Dec 2025
This was a great experience and I highly recommend it. The hike can be quite challenging and do not underestimate it.
The company provided all the extra gear (i.e., winter jackets, gloves, flashlight, sleeping bags, food, etc...). The rental equipment did the job well. However, I recommend for the operators to bring the sleeping liners to the base camp. Even though the liners were not heavy, they did end up taking a lot of space in the bag.
The food provided was very good (2 breakfasts, lunch, diner), and you do have the option to buy extra snacks during the lunch stop. Please note that you do need to have extra space in your backpack or have the possibility to attach the lunch box as they are quite big. The accommodations at the camp were okay and provided a reasonable protection from the elements.
The hike was challenging, but the guides were great and very supportive. The hike to the Volcan de Fuego can be a bit of a gamble depending on the weather, and we had <5min of clear views on arrival. However, even if you do not proceed with Volcan de Fuego hike, the views from the basecamp were spectacular if the weather is right. The sunrise hike was well worth the effort.
Overall, great team, organization, and the experience itself. Highly recommended.

I did the Acatenango and Fuego hike with our lovely host and guide Marvin. This is a hike and company I would definitely recommend! Everything was well organized from breakfast and introduction with the group, gathering of warm clothes and other equipment, transport to the starting point of the hike, food during the day, cabins where we spent the night and the hike itself. The group was very fun and we took breaks during the hike to basecamp to accommodate everyone on the group (a bit too many breaks for my preference, but it's good we didn't leave anyone behind). You had the option to rent a porter for your backpack, which I would also recommend. Unfortunately we didn't have the best weather so we couldn't see anything from basecamp, but I was glad I did the extra Fuego hike. Seeing the volcano erupt is a once in a lifetime experience, that I wouldn't miss for the world! All together I had a very good experience!
Spencer_B, Nov 2025
The hike with CA travelers was really good! They knew what they were doing and it felt comfortable and safe. The cabins at the top are pretty good and better than I expected. The view was incredible. Marvin was fantastic, he was fun and chill. One thing I learned that I didn’t know booking them is that all of the money you spend goes into investing in schools for the community in the surrounding area, which feels really good, because the Guatemalan people are wonderful.
A few notes for the hike itself, ITS HARD! Pack layers, lots of them. And bring extra because everything gets wet, you hike through the rain forest. And hire a porter!!! You will enjoy it significantly more if you hire a porter. The money helps the porters out and their families too. They’re all very sweet.
Davis_R, Nov 2025
Challenging uphill climb, freezing temperatures, some haphazardness, but overall an awesome experience.
LeeMarshall, Nov 2025
Marvin and the guides were fantastic. They were encouraging and kept a good pace. All the food was delicious, and the sleeping arrangement was good. Highly recommend hiring a porter to carry your bag up as it is not an easy hike. After the hike to basecamp, if you still have energy, the Fuego hike and summit hike are both well worth it! Would travel with CA Travel again!
Maria_E, Jun 2025
We had amazing guides, Lorena and Marvin were super helpful and made the experience great. Lorena was so patient and had such a positive attitude the entire time even when my partner and I were tired. I have to say I was not prepared for how steep this trail was going to be, you are practically hiking a steep slippery slope the entire time which was a physical challenge, even for someone who works out. It’s important to note how cold it gets at the top of the volcano, if you can bring your own gear it’s best. Overall a good experience, please prepare if it will be your first hike and know it is not easy. We did not get to see an eruption but the view would of been incredible if we did since you get an amazing view of Fuego.
Jeff_W, May 2025
The experience was amazing overall! So so beautiful. As two fit people in their 20s, the hike wasn’t all that hard, but the optional add on hike was definitely challenging. The experience loses points for poor transport to and from the trail head. Additionally, they say there are hiking shoes for you to use, but they’re terrible. I ended up just wearing my running shoes instead of their hiking shoes, and I regretted not bringing my own hiking shoes.
LEE_Y, Mar 2025
They provide everything you need, like lunch, dinner and breakfast in boxes, blanket, jacket...., which means you have to hike up with all these stuff, it's more than bearable burden for a beginner to hike up without hiring a porter.
There are almost 30 people in a group with just 4 guides accompanied, it's difficult to take good cares of everyone with all different conditions.
Thought the staff and guide are friendly, this is not an appropriate tour for beginners, unless paying extra for porters or horse is acceptable.
Response from Host, Mar 2025
Hello Lee,
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We appreciate your feedback and understand that carrying the provided gear can be challenging, especially for beginners. Our goal is to offer a well-equipped and safe adventure, which is why we provide meals, warm clothing, and essentials to ensure a comfortable experience at the summit.
Regarding group size, we always send 1 guide for every 8 people to ensure better attention and safety, while other companies typically send 1 guide for every 10 to 12 people. Our experienced guides do their best to support all hikers, but we understand that each person’s needs are different. For those who prefer a lighter load, we also offer the option to hire a porter or horse for added comfort.
We’re glad to hear that you found our staff and guides friendly, and we truly appreciate your insights. Your feedback helps us continue improving our tours for all adventure levels.
Best regards,
CA Travelers

You need a large 40 lt hiking back pack . We had to rent one from them. Difficult hike but they let you take breaks as needed. They offer porters to carry your things if needed. Definitely worth it. Amazing views from the top. It was well organized, private cabins, food boxes, water. The guides were great!
Reyna_C, Feb 2025
Guides are amazing, careful and always asked me if I was ok since I had to stop several times to catch my breath. The only thing is I wish this tour starts the hike at least 8AM and not 11, we reached camp ar 4:30 by that tome clouds roller in and we were unable to summit due to weather. Guides did kot recommend summit under those conditions and I listen because they know better than me, I feel if we started earlier we could have made it Otherwise the CA is great and the guides are professionals.
Alfeah_S, Jan 2025
What an amazing experience once in a lifetime, the hike took me out, and left me out of breath, but as a first-time hiker, I will stubbornly do it again next year. The company does a good job at preparation. Please hire the porter for your bag, and don't overpack.
cecil_c, Jan 2025
Let me start off by saying don’t be afraid to do this hike. This company took care of my friend and I all the way through. Marvin was great he made sure he explained everything to you, very up front and made sure you had all your equipment and food. When we started the hike all the guides were so helpful and patient there are about 4 or 5 guides and one always stays behind to make sure you are okay. Also if you haven’t hiked I highly recommend for you to get a porter they help you and they also stay with you. It’s very cold so bring lots of layers and snacks the views we got were spectacular unfortunately the volcano did not erupt but the views was still breathtaking I would recommend this company 100%
