Things to do in  La Libertad

More hip than hippie

Sitting pretty on El Salvador’s rugged Pacific coastline, La Libertad is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations—and for good reason. Not only does the historic port town have beautiful, relatively untouched beaches—especially compared to El Salvador’s more popular neighboring countries—but it also has some of the best surf in Central America. Just a 30-minute drive from San Salvador, the best things to do in La Libertad include surfing, beach-hopping, partying, and exploring the Malecon Puerto de La Libertad, a recently modernized 19th-century pier and fish market.

When to visit

Most visitors prefer to visit La Libertad during the dry season (December to April), when the weather is warm and pleasant and the water inviting—just note that these months can also be pretty busy as city folks flock to the coast for the weekend. Rainy season (May to November) is a little quieter but can still be fun, especially if you like swimming—or more likely, surfing—in the rain.

Getting around

The best way to get around La Libertad is by public bus or rideshare. Public buses are very affordable and can be quite a fun experience, especially if you’re just heading up and down the coast. It takes around 15-20 minutes to get from La Libertad to El Tunco or El Zonte. La Libertad itself is easily walkable, as are most of the beach towns, but walking around at night is generally best avoided, especially if you’re traveling alone.

Traveler tips

Most travelers to La Libertad end up staying around the tourist towns of El Tunco or El Zonte, and then take day trips in to visit the pier, the waterfront, and the fish market, where you can enjoy some of the area’s freshest ceviche. El Tunco is one of El Salvador’s most popular destinations, known for its laid-back vibes, weekend parties, surfable waves, and sea caves. El Zonte, on the other hand, is a little more upmarket and family-friendly, with sandy beaches and more swimming options.
