Make your way to the tour office for morning or afternoon departure, then board an open-top Jeep for the trip to La Plata Canyon, which has the distinctive, U-shaped landscape left by ancient glaciers. With peaks on either side of the scenic canyon, enjoy great views throughout the drive, while riding higher and higher into the mountains.
Watch for wildlife as you follow rugged Jeep trails past several small waterfalls and mountain rivers. Climb to alpine meadows to find bright wildflowers, then discover La Plata City, an abandoned mining town that was first established in the frontier days of 1875, with visible remnants of old mining claims.
Reach Kennebec Pass at 12,000 feet (3,658 mt.) above sea level, with majestic views to Cortez and Telluride, and a bird’s-eye perspective on spruce tree forests, peaks, and river valleys. Following your time at the pass, trace the Jeep roads back out of La Plata Canyon and return to the original departure point, where this tour concludes.

This Jeep excursion was great! Our tour guide, Jarrod, was incredibly knowledgeable about the region and the rich mining history of the mountains. He shared so many interesting facts! I also liked that he was willing to spend time with us at some of the stops to let us explore, ask questions, take pictures or just sit and take in the astounding views. We never felt rushed. The tour does go way up into the mountains, to 11,000 feet, and gets pretty rough due to the rock & natural debris trails, so you need to be capable of holding on and handling the very bumpy ride. However, if thats not an issue for you, it was absolutely worth it for the unbelievable views we got when we reached our destination!!! It was breathtaking-nothing we've seen before. Jarrod knows his vehicle, the mountains and his history extremely well. We consider ourselves lucky he was our host for the afternoon. 10 thumbs up!! PS: Wear sturdy, closed toed shoes or boots, bring small snacks. Your guide will have water. Suggest not eating prior to your tour!

Our guide Myles was excellent. His oratory and information all through the day was interesting. He offered water and snacks. We met new people and enjoyed their company.
We travel the world and have to say until we reached the last step at the top of the canyon the sires were not impressive. This is only my opinion.
While the description mentioned a bumpy ride, it was much more than I anticipated. Thankfully seat belts kept us connected to the earth.
Very nice people, great information about the mining which went on, just understand the ride up and down is not for anyone with neck or back problems.
The weather was beautiful. Myles rolled the top tarp up so the sides were open. I wish the cover provided views to the front of the vehicle, but I don’t believe it could. If you’re well informed about the rugged drive up and down the canyon, you might find the journey well worth your time. This is a good company so understand I am not downing the experience for others, this is just an honest, personal assessment.
The view at the top was beautiful.

This was an amazing experience driving up to the top of the peak. Our expert guide, Paul, drove with skill and precision all the while giving us the mining history of the area; the wildlife - we saw deer and cattle; and other artifacts - the chimney and old schoolhouse. Paul also delved into the landscape - the flowers, trees-which I loved. He is an encyclopedia of the area. Hopefully you get him as your guide.

Bella was an awesome guide! The history was engaging. I expected to see a little more but the snow limited the tour. Only complaint is that sitting in the jeep with benches facing each other made it difficult to see some of the sights Bella pointed out

Our guide was Jay. He is very knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor. He was great with the child on the trip. He would stop by streams and show him what types of rocks to look for. He showed him how to break a rock to look for silver or gold inside. We had a fun afternoon.

The beautiful view, and Lee, our tour guide, was amazing, fun and very friendly! He also taught us a lot about the area and the history.
Our guide Tosh stopped & picked wild gooseberries for us to try. No one in our group had ever had them. He was a great guide & very knowledgeable. He kept it really fun!

We were very disappointed with the lack of information from Victor. The original trip was cancelled because of avalanche warnings and we were able to take the Silverton trip instead. Thank goodness we had corresponded with the company so we knew what had happened.
We saw some of the most amazing scenery that we would never have seen without being on the jeep tour. We had an extremely knowledgeable guy name Jared. He was amazing and we had a great great time!
Enjoyed the back woods way off the trail with Jerid and his knowledge of the history of the Mountain and follage.
Our guide Ohmar was great. Very informative and personal. The trip up the mountain was beautiful. Would love to do it again !!
