After meeting your guide near the Piramide metro station in Rome, you’ll board your train together for the trip out of the city to Ostia Antica.
While the archaeological site is sometimes dubbed “little Pompeii,” Ostia Antica is anything but little with a huge collection of well-preserved ruins, a steep amphitheater, mosaics, and even a bathing complex. Skip feeling overwhelmed, and follow your guide straight to the highlights, while hearing tales of Ostia in its glory days as the port city of ancient Rome.
Pass along the main street of Decumanus Maximus, admire the Baths of Neptune, take photos from the sizeable amphitheater, and stroll amid the ruined shops and living quarters. After, you’ll walk back to the train station and return to Rome by train with your guide.

Rob was an outstanding tour guide. His knowledge of archeology, geology, botany and history was both delightful and informative. He made Ostia Antica come alive. He was also very attentive to the varied needs of the group regarding pacing and safety.

Very informative tour through ancient Ostia! We had beautiful weather and our guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, ready to answer any and all questions. Make sure to bring walking shoes as Ostia is big and beautiful and it's fun to 'get lost' there after the tour!

Great place to tour around , we found a statue hidden inside one of the tunnels and were surprised it wasn’t labeled nor advertised lol . Nevertheless it was a great find and was the highlight of our trip! The place is full of history and amazing , take your time looking around and be careful as the terrain is uneven . Also be aware that the ticket includes entrance to the palace across the street in front of the front gate . Our tour guide was nice but not so chatty about the history and the train was delayed so lots of waiting . Overall it was still a great tour! One of our favorites!

This was an EXCELLENT tour and guide. We travel a lot and, while the low price made me cautious, the reviews convinced me to try it. Our guide was very knowledgeable and I feel we were much better able to understand the buildings and culture of the site. Highly recommended!

Visiting Ostia Antica again did not disappoint. Liv, our guide, was a rich source of interesting facts and social history bringing the site alive. Would definitely recommend.

Rob was a fantastic guide. He brought the 1st Roman city to life. He is so knowledgeable and really knows the history and the facts. You can tell Rob loves his job and people. He made us feel like we were back in time, truly imagining what it looked like and how the Romans lived. Best tour and Rob is the best. Highly recommend.

Our tour guide, Barbara was very friendly, thorough, and engaging with the entire group. Her knowledge and passion for ancient history made it very easy to follow along. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone that is looking to explore the wonders of Ostia Antica. Great job Barbara!

This is an amazing experience, not to be missed. Our tour guide was Alberto and he’s knowledgeable and interesting.

Our guide Alberto was very knowledgeable and passionate regarding the archeological site. He was a wealth of information but not overwhelming and certainly not boring. He was patient with the group and answered every and all questions very professionally. I would highly recommend Ostia, a place which is not frequented by many, and od course with Alberto as your guide.
Daniele_M, Nov 2025
Don’t waste your money with this company! Very poor guided tour… But the site is interesting, so get there by the train ( very easy) and pay for an audio-guide.

The archeological park itself was really worth seeing. However, the guide Martina was as exciting as dry toast. I could have gotten more information delivered in a more expressive way from the audio guide that you can purchase with your entry ticket.

This was a great tour! We met and traveled by train together from Rome to Ostia Antica. Our group was under 15 people and our guide Laura Luongo was maybe my favorite guide I've ever had. She wss able to really help us understand Roman life in this area . Laura is from Naples and her warm, kind but tough nature helped us plow through crowds of teen visitors in our path and adjusted as needed to always meet the needs of her group. I loved this tour! Ask for her. Ostia Antica is so worth touring --no tine for Pompeii?, do this tour w Laura. Pro Tip : Also, be sure to read the additional info about the meeting point. Look for text the morning of to be at meeting point about 20 min early ❤️

Really awesome experience, more people need to see Ostia Antica it is incredible. Alberto was a phenomenal guide, one of the best. He was extremely kind, easy to follow and had a vast amount of knowledge. Made it fun for my kid to not get bored

The Ancient Ostia Tour with Cat was fantastic! Cat was a great tour guide, she was very informative and friendly. The tour was also the perfect amount of time.
JaniceJan_K, Sept 2025
We would highly recommend this tour. Our guide Cat was excellent. She had great knowledge of Ostia and it showed she loved sharing it with her travellers.
The tour is well organised and instructions were very easy to follow.

I think it was our favorite activity in Rome because of the amazing guide and the lack of crowds seen everywhere else. So much ancient history, the place is huge and ready to explore, definitely a gem not spoiled by hordes of tourists. Our guide Rob was very friendly, knowledgeable, and make sure we stayed comfortable walking around in a scorching 95 degree day. After the tour, we hopped on the train and went to the beach for a couple hours, definitely recommend!
Rosalie_T, Aug 2025
Outstanding information of all areas by our guide Liv. Her detailed descriptions of everything so absorbing, really brought to our attention the advanced way of life the Roman's led

This tour surpassed my expectations. Period.
Firstly, I extend my gratitude to our exceptional tour guide Rob, through whom I engaged with, acquired knowledge, and experienced this segment of Rome's history!
This tour was outstanding from start to finish! I enjoyed traveling by rail and experiencing Italy
—specifically, regions I would not have visited independently! Due to Rob's extensive knowledge, artistic disposition, and excentional narrative skills. I have gained significant insights. Kindly arrange for the booking of this tour. Stroll among the ancient ruins that influenced our history!

This tour is great for anyone who is interested in ancient Roman history and architecture. It was not crowded, so we could really get close to the points of interest. Our guide (Roberto) did an excellent job explaining many of the features of the town, the shops, and how archaeologists have done work there. At the end of the tour we could choose to leave, or continue exploring the grounds, including the Museum, which was fascinating. The tour involves stairs, uneven ground, and transferring on and off a train, so it might be challenging if someone has limited mobility.

What an excellent tour! We decided to do this tour rather than face the crowds at Pompeii and we are so glad we did so. Our tour guide had amazing history knowledge and was entertaining and informative. We really understood how life was at the time. There were very few people at the site and our guide found shady sites for us to stand in.
Meryl_B, Jul 2025
Alberto, our guide, was wonderful. He met us at a train station in Rome and took us, on the train, to Ostia Antica. He knew about all the buildings we saw and explained it well. It was not very crowded. This place is a gem.
Stefan_P, Jul 2025
This was really an insightful tour into a complete Roman city ruin. Provided a very real understanding of how the Romans lived and thought. Our host Alberto provided a clear view of how The Romans lived and the history of this particular city. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to truly explore the Roman day to day experience. Family was initially skeptical of “archaeological” tour (I was quite excited) but they all found the tour enlightening and enjoyable - no regrets at all. If traveling with teenagers - maybe offer them option to continue trek after tour to go to Ostia beaches just 1-2 stops further down rail from Ostia Antigua.
Toby_F, Jul 2025
We booked this tour to go on with our neighbors from home who happened to be in Rome the same time as us! This is a MUST DO especially if you do not have the time to visit Pompeii! It was incredible and our guide, Alberto, was fantastic! We appreciated not only his knowledge but, the tempo in which he tours. He showed us the most “important” ruins then gave us the option stay longer or head back. It was perfect!
Noelene_S, Jul 2025
Ostia Antica has so much to see in understanding Romes past. It should be on everyone’s must see list.
Erika_C, Jun 2025
Alfredo was a great guide! Very patient with our group and made it fun and interesting…it was very hot and he made sure we stood in the shade most of the time and explained to us about where we could fill our water bottles, etc.
Anne_D, Jun 2025
Great tour. Always amazed at how these cities were built so long ago and wonderful they are being restored for all to see. Our guide Alberto was very informative.
Dawn_B, Jun 2025
This was an easy train ride out of Rome for a half day trip. Ostia Antica is a great location dripped in history to be learned by all ages.
Joshua_F, Jun 2025
Ostia is a great place to visit there is a wealth of great sites to see that is a bit overwhelming. Our guide Alberto did a good job with the large group that had many different levels of knowledge on the tour. I could have spent hours more exploring the site but with two teens the tour was the right length. It is very easy to get out to the site on train and the metro passes work for even trains out to Ostia.
Great experience with a good guide.
Clampert88, May 2025
Great site to visit- the museum was also very interesting- be ready for a lot of walking.
My only complaint is related to the tour guide Lara. I have a problem on my knee and I need a cane to walk. The tour guide totally disregarded my disability not providing a little more time to get to each spot- She walked fast and started to explain stops even if the entire group was not present. She was quite rude and totally ignored me and my husband, we just needed few more seconds to walk. If you need a slower pace and your guide is Lara you better go alone, since you will be on your own. Disappointing -
