That's why I offer my dawn tour, which requires a small initial sacrifice but pays off with a truly invigorating and aesthetically unique experience : The schedule is still flexible and if you really don't want to wake up before sunrise, this tour can still be done early in the morning. Must do in Matera

We had an intimate private tour as my husband and I were the only ones on the tour. We had less than 24 hours in Matera and wanted to get the most of it. Our ( nice middle age lady) she is a local, her folks have lived in Matera forever Great to hear the history of this mystical village, pictures and words do not do it right justice. Tour Matera with a native expert

We learned so much on this tour, having never experienced Matera before. Our guide, Renato, had a personal history, as his grandfather had been relocated from the site in 1952. He spoke of the squalor of the caves and the resourcefulness of the occupants, who foraged for food on the hillsides and built a system to provide public water. Renato told us of the "shame of Italy" and the government's efforts to relocate the cave dwellers. We heard stories, some humorous, some sad, but all with a passion for the history of Matera. There is a lot of walking and stair climbing - this tour is not for the faint of heart - but it is truly worth the effort. Grazie mille, Renato, for a wonderful experience and a lasting memory of Matera.

Fabulous experience!!!

It was absolutely amazing. Francesco was wonderful!!! Other tours had recordings and headphones, but Francesco spoke directly to us and provided interesting and pertinent facts. It was beyond our expectations. He stopped several times so that we could take pictures, visit a church and explore an actual cave house. I highly recommend this tour!

BEST way to see Matera

This is by far the best way to see Matera. Our guide, even with limited English, was incredibly helpful and friendly and showed us everything we wanted to see and more. Plenty of time for photographs and getting out and seeing incredible views. This is a great thing for somebody with a mobility issues, and the central Meetup location was easily accessible by taxi.

Touring Outlying Areas Around Matera.

The tour to Murgia Park was beautiful, allowing us to see some of the areas surrounding the Sassi portion of Matera. We were able to tour a cave church, learn about the refrigeration system of past centuries, and learn about some of the native plants of the area. The weather was quite nice. However, the low cloud cover on the evening of our tour did not allow for a magnificent sunset as we had hoped. To compensate for this disappointment was the ability to see the night lights of Matera’s Sassi area across the deep canyon between us. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and helpful with answering our questions. This was a very pleasant and enjoyable tour!

Lost in Italian

I did the tour knowing it was in Italian but there was no English option at that time. I loved walking around in the evening and the point is to view the sight. The best part and why I booked the tour was the entry to a church and cave house that I otherwise would not have seen.
