Guided tour of Parca della Murgia

Diana_W, Sep 2025
Enjoyable tour with Ivan, a very well-informed guide who answered questions on the history, ecology, archaeology and geology of Parca della Murgia and two Rupestrian churches. The view of Matera at sunset is stunning.

Incredible!

Olivia_M, Aug 2025
This was an incredible experience. We were very lucky, our guide, Mikele, was very knowledgeable and passionate. He shared a lot of information with us from history to architecture, nature and ecology. The sunset over Matera was breathtaking! I would highly recommend this experience.

Exhilarating and Fascinating

Brett_B, May 2025
What started out to be an exhilarating and worthwhile walk turned into a fascinating historical overview of the area opposite the Sissi. We were on the 6:00pm tour, which terminated at sunset, which happened to be quite spectacular with wispy clouds on the horizon. We visited a couple of rock/cave churches, as well as the set of a soon to be filmed movie. Loved it!!

We went to the meeting place a day before and were told that the tour would start at 5, not 5:30 as was scheduled. We got there on time and by 5:15 nobody was giving us any explanation as to why the tour was delayed. We finally set out on a mini bus, got to the destination and were on the bus for 15 minutes just sitting there again without any explanation as to what was happening. The guide who was going to give the tour in Italian was late but our guide was on the bus. We then got out of the bus and started the tour with Claudio. He's a very nice guy, but his English is not. He had a lot of difficulty explaining things, his sentences didn't make sense at times. We were looking forward to seeing the churches and hiking in the park, but they need to be more organized and hire people with better language skills.

Response from Host, May 2025

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We sincerely apologize for the delays and lack of clear communication you experienced at the start of the tour. We understand how frustrating it must have been to wait without explanation and we are working to improve our punctuality and customer communication. Regarding the language difficulties with the guide, we appreciate your honesty and will take your comments seriously. Providing clear and engaging explanations in the preferred language is a priority for us, and we are reviewing our training and staffing to ensure better language skills going forward. We’re glad to hear that Claudio made a positive impression despite the language barrier, and we truly regret that the overall experience did not meet your expectations. Thank you again for your valuable insights—they help us grow and improve. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future with a more seamless and enjoyable experience. Best regards,

Great

Francis_P, Apr 2024
Mimma was a wonderful guide. Very knowledgeable about the history, ecology and geology of the area. She suggested that we change the timing of our tour to see the sun setting over Matera Sassi. Definitely worth the trip if you can get Mimma as your guide!

We will be back

Vera_V, Jun 2023
Mimma opened the us up to the magic of the nature and history of the Murgia. Incredible to see the results of the interaction of man and nature for over 10000 years. Beautiful views too!

Amazing views

Bernice_C, Sep 2021
The views were fantastic. Our guide timed the tour so we saw the sunset over Matera. Lots of walking, but we’ll worth it!

Passionate

elisabetta_i, Apr 2026
We made the visit with Francesco, an archaeologist from Matera, very good and obviously passionate about his land and his work. He transferred so much enthusiasm to us and described both the historical and social and cultural aspects that made us grasp the beauty and importance of the place we were staying. Nice, but at the same time very significant also the anecdotes that enriched his story and that involved the boys. Beautiful are the caves and rock churches and not least the view of Matera at sunset.

Organizationally a disaster

Karin_R, Sep 2025
On time!!! 17 h start according to booking. No notification that it's supposed to start at 5:30 now. Nothing happened until 5:45 p.m. Then waited another 15 minutes for the bus. 18 h it finally started. After the tour to the Rusperti churches in the pitch darkness waited another over 30 minutes for the bus to take us back to the city. It had also rained lightly. You know when the tours are over. Absolutely incomprehensible. Then we were dropped off at another point, and not there as originally stated.

Parco della Murgia

Monica_V, Jul 2024

Esperienza consigliatissimo.
