Things to do in  Senegal

West Africa’s coastal darling

In the westernmost part of Africa, Senegal offers a superb mix of natural beauty and historic sites. There are tons of things to do in Senegal, from heading out on wildlife safaris to floating in the saline waters of pink-hued Lake Retba. It’s also worth visiting the UNESCO-listed Island of Gorée—once the largest hub of the slave trade on the African Coast—which provides a solemn reminder of the four centuries of dehumanizing brutality that was the transatlantic slave trade.

When to visit

The best time to visit Senegal is in winter (Dec.–Mar.) when the weather is pleasantly cool but far from cold. It's wise to avoid the rainy season, which runs from June until Sep. Nov. is a particularly great month to visit as it coincides with the annual Great Carnival of Dakar, a showcase of Senegal’s many cultures.

Getting around

While it's easy to get around Dakar by taxi, if you plan to head further afield, you're best off renting a car or signing up for a guided tour. While it’s not particularly difficult to drive in much of the country, the road quality in some areas is poor. If you don't speak French, a guided tour is usually your best bet.

Traveler tips

Situated in the coastal fishing village of Toubab Dialaw, about an hour south from Dakar, the Sobo Bade guesthouse is a destination unto itself. This Gaudi-esque guesthouse was built using naturally sourced materials. Many people come to spend the night, but even if you're not staying, it's worth popping by just to check out the innovative architecture and pretty sea views.
