The River Gambia National Park consists of five islands—collectively known as Baboon Island—that are home to a wealth of wildlife: hippos, crocodiles, monkeys, baboons, and a population of rescued chimpanzees. A selection of camps allow you to get closer to nature overnight, while river cruises feel miles away from the coastal chaos.

A tall white archway perched on eight huge fluted columns, Arch 22 was built to commemorate the military coup of 1994. It’s considered Banjul’s most important landmark—even appearing on the 100-dalasi note—and houses a small museum and café, though most travelers visit for the sweeping views.

Gambia’s—and Banjul’s—biggest market, the Albert Market is a high-energy dive into West African life. An arts and crafts section caters to visiting travelers, whereas the colorful food zone serves up fresh produce to locals. Meanwhile, in the dry goods section, you’ll find everything from clothing to electronics.
