Saijo is one of Japan's three major sake-producing regions. There are seven sake breweries within walking distance of Saijo Station, and you can efficiently tour three of the seven breweries in an hour and a half while listening to an English guide explain the history of each brewery and the sake they make. You can also sample sake recommended by each brewery. You can sample a variety of sake, including daiginjo, junmai sake, and umeshu, so you're sure to find your favorite. Our Hiroshima and Miyajima tour was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan, and much of that was thanks to our outstanding guide, Angeles from Chile. From the moment the tour started, everything ran like clockwork. We departed on time, travelled in comfort, and returned exactly as scheduled—a testament to the excellent organization of the trip. Our adventure began with a pleasant boat ride to Miyajima Island. As soon as we arrived, the first residents to welcome us were the famous deer. Unlike some overly enthusiastic wildlife elsewhere, these deer were charming, polite, and seemed genuinely interested in meeting visitors. It was a delightful and memorable encounter. Angeles then guided us through the history and significance of Miyajima's famous Itsukushima Shrine. She explained the spiritual importance of the shrine, known for its iconic floating torii gate that appears to rise from the sea during high tide. Her storytelling brought centuries of Japanese culture and tradition to life, making the visit far more meaningful than simply admiring a beautiful landmark. One of the many fun moments of the tour was when Angeles taught us the Japanese word "Talaima”. Whether we pronounced it correctly or not is another story entirely, but it certainly added to the cultural experience and gave us all a good laugh. What truly set Angeles apart was her remarkable ability to keep the entire group engaged. She delivered her explanations fluently in both Spanish and English, seamlessly switching between the two languages without missing a beat. Her enthusiasm, warmth, and storytelling skills held the audience in rapt, almost mesmerizing attention. History lessons can sometimes feel like homework in disguise, but Angeles transformed them into captivating stories that everyone wanted to hear. After Miyajima, we continued to Hiroshima, where Angeles provided thoughtful and moving explanations about the Peace Memorial and its symbolism. She carefully explained the historical significance of the monument and the powerful message it conveys about peace, remembrance, and hope for future generations. Her presentation was informative, respectful, and deeply impactful. This tour offered the perfect combination of history, culture, education, and enjoyment. Between the scenic boat ride, the friendly deer, the magnificent shrine, the moving visit to Hiroshima, and Angeles's exceptional guiding, it was an unforgettable experience. What a surreal experience this was. Our guide was outstanding and truly went above and beyond to make it a memorable day for us. Visiting Hiroshima was a genuine bucket-list experience. Being there in person makes you realize the true scale of the events that took place. What we read in history books as children or watch in documentaries can never compare to standing at the Peace Memorial and experiencing it firsthand. The city carries a deep and painful history, and there is certainly much that world leaders can learn from its past. At the same time, Hiroshima is a remarkable example of resilience—rising from the ashes to become the vibrant and thriving city it is today. Miyajima was equally beautiful, with the deer freely roaming around and the stunning scenery all around. Our guide, Gordon, made this experience so much more meaningful with his storytelling. He brought us back to 1945 as if we had been residents living through this horrific time. Whether on the bridge, at the dome, museum, the Peace Park, the other historic sites, he totally enriched our experience. This walking tour was very informative! Our tour guide “Nisa” was excellent in explaining the history of the relationship between US and Japan. She explained the events leading to the A-bomb, the effects, the resiliency and the restoration efforts of the people in Hiroshima. If you’re visiting in June be aware of the heat. Bring water and a sun umbrella. There’s a cafe within the region to get drinks and snacks/lunch. There lots of restaurants in the area for after the tour. Loved this tour and a must do!

Fabulous tour from a local guide that went above & beyond

Mari was an outstanding guide. Not only did she give us an educational tour that benefited from her local knowledge, she included a visit to an excellent okonomiyaki restaurant for a tasty, local lunch, taught us origami, gave us a 5.5hr tour that should only have lasted 4hrs to ensure we saw all the principal sights of Hiroshima as well as guiding us back to our hotel so we didn’t get lost. She took lots of photos that she sent to us after our trip. Plus, ensured we knew exactly where we needed to be the following morning to join our next trip. Our thanks to the perfect guide. Jorge was the highlight

Let’s start with the negatives, we did not get our tickets until 12hours before the bullet train, but that was the only bad thing. Jorge our guide was absolutely amazing, insightful, intelligent and personable. The information he provided for both sites plus life as a Japanese man was very useful, he gave history and then stories on how that history was forged, Ok and for the trip, Miyajima And the floating Tori gate was great, The shrines and temples, and the food all great.
