Also known as the St. George Rotunda, Sofia's early-Christian Church of St. George was originally built by Romans during the 4th century, making it one of Bulgaria’s oldest buildings. Today, the church attracts visitors with its medieval frescoes, varied architecture, and Roman-era ruins that surround it.

Often known as “Vitoshka,” Vitosha Boulevard is Sofia’s main commercial street. Partially pedestrianized, it runs from the historic center to South Park, with most of the action concentrated at the northern end. Vitoshka is home to higher-end stores and cafés, St. Nedelya Church, the huge Communist-era TSUM store, and more.

The Sofia National Gallery is Bulgaria’s largest art museum, boasting a collection of more than 42,000 pieces. First established in the early 20th century, the gallery moved into the former Royal Palace in 1946, and has since grown to several branches across Sofia, including the Kvadrat 500 and Museum of Socialist Art.

Browse orderly shops and stalls of Central Sofia Market Hall (Halite) in search of souvenirs, snacks, and bargains. Pay attention to the structure, opened in 1911, as the market is widely considered to be architect Naum Torbov’s finest work, blending neo-baroque with neo-Byzantine features, in a neo-Renaissance structure.

Housed in a palace once home to Bulgaria’s Communist dictator, the Sofia National Museum of History tells the story of Bulgaria in painstaking detail. It features everything from Roman statues and Thracian gold to Russian fighter planes, folk costumes, and Antarctica. Exhibits are in Bulgarian and English.

A 17th-century merchant’s home turned museum, the Konstantsalieva House is one of the largest and most beautifully decorated houses in the village of Arbanasi, a historic trading town outside Veliko Tarnovo. Its austere and fortress-like defensive exterior conceals spacious rooms with bright fabrics and Bulgarian Revival furniture. There’s a souvenir shop on the ground floor.

One of Bulgaria’s biggest winter sports resorts, with a heritage dating back to the 19th century, Borovets perches in the Rila Mountains and offers downhill, cross-country, and night skiing. It’s particularly good for intermediates and improvers. A lively but affordable aprés-ski scene makes it a smash with budget travelers, while there’s excellent hiking and mountain biking over summer.

The Amphitheater of Serdica was discovered beneath Sofia in 2004. Dating back to the 3rd century, the 25,000-capacity venue would have held gladiator battles and blood sports and today forms part of the wider Ulpia Serdica archaeological complex. Visitors can peruse a small section of the remains, along with artifacts and animals prints that were uncovered at the site.

Nestled below cliffs in the Pirin Mountains, the Rozhen Monastery of the Nativity of the Mother of God boasts a heritage dating back to Byzantine times—although most of what you’ll see today is from the 18th century. Highlights include a 2-story ossuary, a miraculous icon, and a narthex (porch) with 16th-century frescoes.

A summer residence built for Queen Marie of Romania, Balchik Palace (Dvoreca) adds a touch of heritage to the waterfront of Balchik on Bulgaria’s coast. Around its main three-story villa are garden terraces with sea views, while the Balchik Botanic Gardens sprawl around it with vivid floral displays, forest paths, and small waterfalls.

A giant red star that once crowned Bulgaria’s Communist Party headquarters and a spectacular range of Lenin statues adorn the 80,000-square-foot (7,500-square-meter) sculpture garden of Sofia’s Museum of Socialist Art. As the name would suggest, the museum showcases works from Bulgaria’s Socialist (Communist) period: 1945–1989.

Erected in 1954 to commemorate the liberation of Bulgaria by the Red Army during World War II, Sofia’s Monument to the Soviet Army has been a topic of great debate for decades. Over the years, it’s undergone various transformations, including being painted in protest art and serving as a focal point for political demonstrations.

Variously written Kvadrat 500, Quadrat 500, or Square 500, Kvadrat 500 opened in 2015 as the largest museum in the Sofia National Gallery collection. Twenty-eight separate rooms house a wealth of artworks from around the world, with a special focus on Bulgarian art from the 19th and 20th centuries.

One of the star attractions on Mt. Vitosha, the massif just outside Sofia, Boyana Waterfall tumbles 82 feet (25 meters) down a stark rock face amid shady forest. It’s a tranquil, unspoiled spot that makes an excellent focus for a walk in the national park. One popular route goes by way of Boyana Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Over a million years’ worth of Bulgarian history is displayed across the four halls that make up the National Institute of Archaeology & Museum. The museum opened in 1905, occupying a 15th-century former mosque that was once the city’s largest. Exhibits include prehistoric objects, unique Thracian treasures, as well as a range of artifacts spanning Early Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages.

Bringing a fairytale castle to life, the Castle of Ravadinovo, also known as “In Love with the Wind,” is an attraction just outside the Bulgarian seaside town of Sozopol. Construction on this fantastical marble castle began in 1996, and around it are many ornate gardens full of statues, fountains, lakes, and exotic birds.

The Stob Pyramids, a series of earth and sandstone pinnacles formed by national erosion, lie close to the village of Stob in the foothills of the Rila Mountains. These photogenic rock formations make for pleasant hiking and are a popular stop-off on the way to the Rila Monastery UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sunny Beach is a resort destination on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria where you go for fun in the sun—and that’s exactly what you get at its original water park, Action Aquapark. This large water park has more than 30 pools, slides, and raft rides to entertain visitors of all ages, from young families to thrill-seeking adults.

Loud music, sound effects, laughter, and gleeful screams ring out over Sunny Beach Luna Park in the Black Sea summer resort of Sunny Beach. Wedged in the heart of the resort near the water, this amusement park entertains beachgoers with its assortment of rides and attractions.

Both interactive and educational, the Museum of Illusions Sofia explores how physics and optical tricks can create unbelievable results. At this family-friendly museum, the illusions aren’t contained to art hanging on the walls, with installations such as light painting, shadow making, and upside-down rooms, which you can not only engage with, but learn about on a deeper level.

Set on 10 acres (4 hectares) on the outskirts of Sofia, the National Museum of Military History pays tribute to Bulgaria’s past glories. An impressive selection of mainly Soviet-designed military hardware includes tanks and fighters. Inside, displays cover art, weapons, uniforms, and insignia, alongside a bookstore, a café, and a library.

In the Golden Sands resort town up the coast from Varna, Aquapolis is a 10-acre (4-hectare) landscaped water park with a lazy river, pools, and a number of slides. Besides adults’ and children’s areas, the extreme zone boasts the Kamikaze, a slide delivering speeds of up to 37 mph (60 kph). There are a number of food options on-site.

Set in a grand 19th-century building, the Varna Archaeological Museum houses Bulgaria’s finest archaeology collection. Displays spread over 23,000 square feet (2,150 square meters) and run from Stone Age times to the 19th century. Highlights include some of the world’s oldest worked gold, dating back over 6,000 years.

Sofia’s biggest park, Borisova Gradina offers lakes, woodlands, and manicured flower beds. Almost as big as New York City’s Central Park—and in a much smaller city—it’s home to two stadiums (the Vasil Levski National Stadium and the Bulgarian Army Stadium), a TV tower, a myriad of statues, the Communist-era Mound of Brotherhood monument, and several children’s playgrounds.

Ancient church ruins and quaint houses of Bulgarian Revival design line the cobblestone streets of Nessebar Old Town. The historical center of Nessebar, also known as Old Nessebar, covers a small peninsula on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, with cars and souvenir kiosks some of the few signs that you’re still in the 21st century as you wander its mostly pedestrian streets.

Located along much of Varna’s waterfront, east of the city center, the Sea Garden is a sprawling green space with something for everyone. Not only will visitors find promenades, fountains, and monuments here, but also a range of attractions, including the Varna Summer Theatre, the Museum of Natural History, playgrounds, and sports complexes.

Built on land acquired by Tsar Ferdinand I in the late 19th century, Vrana Palace (Park-Museum Vrana) was the preferred residence of the Bulgarian royal family until their exile in 1946. Previously home to a working farm and a zoo, the grounds of the 247-acre (100-hectare) estate now make for an ideal getaway from the hustle and bustle of Sofia’s urban center.

Rediscovered in 2007, the Tsari Mali Grad (Tsar’s Little Town is a restored fortress an hour south of the capital. The sprawling 10-acre site provides insight into the country’s Thracian, Roman, and Byzantine history, and its religious ruins, rural trails, and hilltop views are a must see for any first-time visitor in Bulgaria.

A royal palace first built as a hunting lodge, Tsarska Bistritsa nestles with a fairytale air near the Bistritsa River and Borovets ski resort in the Rila Mountains. Trophies and antiques fill the cozy, wood-lined interior, with a gallery in the stables and an intimate new chapel in the grounds. A century-old hydroelectric turbine still powers the palace radiators.

Once home to the leading Bulgarian figure Neofit Rilski, a monk, writer, and educator, this museum now shows visitors what a typical 18th-century house was like in the town of Bansko. Set behind high walls, the space is well-preserved, though the small exhibition in the barn about Rilski’s work is a modern addition.
