Perched in Kharberd, not far from the storied slopes where Mount Ararat rises, the family run TP winery is a revelation for anyone curious about contemporary Armenian winemaking. Their Moonq range -- crafted in small, handcrafted lots -- covers a pleasingly broad spectrum: bright, fruity whites and rosés that sing of fresh orchard and summer berries; a velvety red blend that balances silk and spice; and a hearty, tannic red Nrneni that delivers concentrated dark fruit and mineral grip. What strikes you first is the clarity of fruit and the sense of place in every bottle: these are wines with personality and purpose.
The rapid ascent of Moonq wines is no accident. In under five years the winery’s artisanal approach has won attention at international competitions and earned warm commendations from critics -- testimony to the care that goes into each vintage. Vine tending is attentive and sustainable, vinification is meticulously tested in laboratory, the cellar is modest but exacting. The result is consistency across small batches, where each bottle feels like a considered essay on grape and terroir rather than an industrial mass product.
A visit to the TP tasting room is equally memorable. The winemaker leads tastings personally, and his stories are as much a part of the experience as the wines: origins of each parcel, the peculiarities of the soil, the trials of getting the qulaity grapes, the triumphs of a blend that finally came together -- told with a warmth and humility that deepen one’s appreciation. Tasting Moonq wines with his narration turns flavors into narratives; acidity, tannin and aroma become chapters rather than isolated sensations. My personal favorites are Moonq 2022 Nrneni Reserve, matured in the oak casks from Artsakh, and the dark rose 2023, the most gastronomic wine I've ever tasted. You can enjoy with any food pairings from salads grilled fish and mezze to roasted meats and mature cheeses.
Whether you’re a seasoned oenophile or a curious traveler, TP’s Moonq line is well worth seeking out -- both for the wines themselves and for the human stories that give them soul.
