"Small Group" Landmannalaugar Tour Observations

* Felt misled that this was a small group experience - 14 travelers jammed in the vehicle. I had to sit in the back of the vehicle in the middle of three people. I did not have a window to see the scenery on the long drive, nor did my seat have a seat belt. * The trip leader, Robert, did not offer any natural or cultural history educational information on the tour. I really wanted to learn about Iceland's geology, geography, and culture. * The leader could not accompany the group on the hike due to a sore leg. He gave rather vague information on the trail and no trail map. * Lunch is not provided nor was a box lunch offered in the pre-departure materials. We were unaware sandwiches and other lunch items were available at the meeting point (Hella) & that there is a small cafe. * There are too many visitors at Landmannalaugar. We could not hike at our own pace because there was a group of 25 ahead and behind us. The parking lot was full for large and small buses. * The number of visitors clearly exceeds the destination's carry capacity. * The roundtrip road transfer time to the tour and back to our hotel was 3 1/2 hours * Overall, our experience was poor given the price US$623 pp, including transfer from Reykjavik hotel. * Several members of the group including one family told me they are requesting refund because they felt misled given that they paid over US$2,000 for the tour. My observations are based on 40-years in the travel industry, serving as Geographic Expedition's President and WWF's VP for Travel in partnership with Natural Habitat Adventures

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to provide such detailed feedback. We are very sorry that the Landmannalaugar tour did not meet your expectations, particularly considering the price you paid and your extensive experience in the travel industry. We are especially concerned by your statement that your seat did not have a seat belt. Safety is extremely important to us, and we will investigate this immediately. We will also review how the group size was presented, as we understand why sitting in the middle rear seat without a clear view would have negatively affected your experience. We are also sorry that you did not receive the educational and guided experience you expected. Our guides should provide information about the region and clear hiking instructions. We will speak with Róbert regarding the information provided and why he was unable to accompany the group on the hike. Lunch is not included in this tour. Lunchboxes are available upon request but must be ordered in advance. Guests may also bring their own lunch or purchase food at our meeting point in Hella. Unfortunately, Landmannalaugar can become very busy during peak periods, and visitor numbers are outside our direct control. The journey is also long, particularly when transfers from Reykjavík are included. Nevertheless, these factors should be clearly explained so guests can make an informed decision before booking. Please send us your booking reference and the name under which the reservation was made. We would like to review the booking information, including how the tour was advertised and what was communicated before departure, so we can respond properly regarding your request for compensation. We sincerely apologize that your experience fell short of expectations, and we appreciate you bringing these concerns to our attention.
