Incredible!!! This was my favorite thing we did in Iceland. Our guide, David, with gravel travel was so knowledgeable and shared stories, history, geology, and more with us. We were able to engage and chat while riding out over beautiful snowy terrain looking ahead at volcanoes and the glacier we’d be visiting. I highly recommend a stay in Vik to see the scenery on the southern coast and to do this tour. Being inside the cave itself was surreal. The vehicle felt safe and comfortable and we even drove back across the beautiful black sand beach. Highly recommend!!

This company does not provide you the ice cleats/shoe chains that other companies do therefore, unless you have your own ice shoes, I do not recommend the company. It is not really safe. While major sections can be gravel and therefore no problem. All you need is a small section where the ice has become a slick for it to become dangerous.
The guide was very fun. He did a great job of giving us information about the glaciers. The tour was interesting. Note this is a large ATV vehicle not small ATVs for individual drivers.

The ice cave we got to explore is very small, probably only 20 meters deep. The tour lists as 3 hours long but in fact, it only lasted 2h 20m for us. We spent only about 30 minutes at the destination so the rest of the times were wasted communting back and forth.

This was a disappointing experience overall. We received very little guidance throughout, and there was only a small cave to see at the end. I’m not sure if the ice caves were out of season during our visit, but the experience did not meet our expectations or seem to match what we anticipated. Unfortunately, we would not recommend it based on our experience.

I cannot say enough about what an amazing trip this was. We were blessed with an incredible tour guide, Jon. He made the experience something neither my son or myself will ever forget.

It's a bit rugged, but a lot of fun. The winds at some stops was crazy. Tunnels are wild! Gravel Travel had great tour guides.

Wow – what an experience! How often do you get the chance to go into an ice cave let alone one in Iceland? This is easily one of my favorite highlight moments from Iceland and favorite images I captured. Our tour guide was superb – he was very knowledgeable and funny! The group is intimate, about ~15 people and everyone was an all around vibe. Highly recommend.

It was great and easy experience. If you’ve never seen a glacier/ ice cave up and personal before it’s definitely worth it. The tour guide was very nice and drove us/ took care of us.

Excellent way to experience more than just the ice caves! Not only did we get to go into a beautiful, man made, ice cave, we made several stops along the way. We stopped to take some pics near small mountains, some plains, and finished up with a ride on the beach! Kate was a a very good guide and had some of the most amazing dry humor you could ever love. Five stars and one of those can't miss when in the area. Thank you!

I would not recommend the tour company Gravel Travel to anyone. We booked the Katla Ice Cave Tour with them and they actually left us at the meeting place without saying a word. They weee hard to find, two unmarked off road vans among twenty. When I finally Bally figured out who we were going with, I told the driver I was going to my car to get my daughter. This was at 12:55 for a 13:00 tour. Now is the part y you ou want believe. As my daughter and I were crossing the driveway from our car to the parking area where the tour vans were parked, one of the two vans drove right by us. They could not have missed seeing us. It was exactly 13:00. After getting over the shock, I contacted another local tour company, Troll.is, who took us on a fantastic tour, with a great guide. Do yourself a favor and call anyone but Gravel Travel. It is a bit deceiving because the listing was under Vik Small-group guided Adventure by Viator. That was part of why it was hard to find them. Gravel Travel was not shown anywhere except on the invoice.

The ice cave they brought us to was way better than the one we went into last year.
Going in was definitely safer, we didn’t need crampons

Many beautiful places apart from the cave! Many beautiful places apart from the cave! Many beautiful places apart from the cave!

The tour guide was amazing. The ice cave was smaller than expected but all the additional stops made this tour worth it.

Ingo was a fantastic guide. The ice cave was smaller than expected, but the ride out — especially driving along the black sand beach — was a lot of fun, and the information he shared made the whole experience worthwhile.

This is a great experience. The guide is really good, Cave itself is very small but getting there and out of there gives you the F1 Road experience which you may not have in your itinerary, on the way back he stopped at a POI where its only vast expanse of black sand against the backdrop of green mountains. view to die for.
Overall good value.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Katla Ice Cave tour with Gravel Travel was one of the highlights of our Iceland trip. The ice cave itself was spectacular, and we were fortunate to have beautiful weather (above 20°C & sunshine) and a small group of just 14 people, giving us plenty of time to enjoy the cave without crowds.
The scenery outside the cave was equally breathtaking, with rugged green cliffs contrasting against the vast black lava sands. Every turn seemed worthy of a photo, and the landscape truly felt otherworldly.
A special thanks to our guide, Gunnar, who was knowledgeable, engaging, and full of great stories. His sense of humour made the experience even more enjoyable and helped make the day memorable.
Highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting south Iceland and looking for a unique and unforgettable experience. 🇮🇸✨

This was an excellent tour! Our guide, David, was great. He was very knowledgeable and entertaining and an excellent photographer.

This was such an amazing tour. We had the best time with our guide Ingo. We drove to the ice cave with a few picture stops on the way, and Ingo told us all about the geography and history of the area. The ice cave itself was fantastic, it was amazing to see the different layers and the landscape. We also did a bit of exploring afterwards to see different waterfalls and areas near the ice cave and on the glacier. We then made our way home with a quick drive across black sand beach. I would highly recommend this tour, especially Ingo!

We did gravel travel. Since Katla caves are covered with ashes and you can't see blue color due to lack of light passing through but still it was breathtaking to see natural ice cave and glacier up close. It was awesome experience. Inco our guide was very pleasant, very happy with his guide.
Sabine_K, Jun 2026
The cave is short, but very pretty. The leandscape is spectacular. At least we drove on the black beach, thas was fantastic, too.
Jolene_S, Jun 2026
The ice cave was cool, and the guide was very nice. But we drove for over an hour each way (beautiful landscape) to be in a cave for about 15 minutes that had water in it (so couldn't go in all of the way). I think it is horribly overpriced for what you get.

Entertaining and knowledgeable tour guide. Great cave experience. The ride there was equally exciting.
Rajashri_S, Jun 2026
Our guide Gunnar was very knowledgeable and make the ride to the cave fun. The landscapes are amazing and we had enough time in the cave. On the way back we stopped for some pictures and as a bonus- drove on the black beach!

We did the morning trip to the Katla ice caves with Davi, he was super knowledgeable and had great information. The ice cave was really awesome and afterwards because the weather was so nice we went to a couple other view points to see the volcanic deserts and glaciers. We drove back along the beach and Davi had plenty of stories about trolls and elves to keep us occupied!! It helped that the weather was beautiful and sunny and in the mid 50s. Overall a great trip and highly recommend Gravel Travel!

Pick up could have been described better, it’s basically a truck in the car park at the rear of the IceWear store. The tour guide made the day, very informative, with a few stories thrown in. The scenery is breathtaking and our cave was excellent. Got some great photos and memories.
Bobby_C, Jun 2026
Ask questions to make sure you are getting what the title is advertising. Ice cave tour and glacier walk was not at all what I expected.
Rachel_B, May 2026
This was a really cool experience. Katla is the only ice cave that can be visited in the summer (when we were going), so we knew we wouldn’t get to do one of the big impressive ice caves but thought we should see what we could. The guide was nice and capable, and our group was able to get all the time we wanted to explore and take pictures (we collectively felt done after 30 minutes). It’s a process to get there and back, and unfortunately it was very rainy and foggy the day we went so we weren’t able to enjoy the views, but it wasn’t raining in the cave so it was still worthwhile. If you’re visiting in the summer and want to visit an ice cave, this is definitely the best option.
Laurel_O, May 2026
The tour was great! We went in a rainy and foggy day and still had a blast. They drive you out to the glacier through lands that look like you were on another planet. Then you put ice chains on your feet and it’s a short 5 minutes walk to the ice cave. You get all the time you’d like to take photos and enjoy the cave. Pretty good tour for most abilities. Wear hiking boots!
Petrus_D, May 2026
We were out and about with guide David for 3 hours. He told us a lot about the culture and customs of Iceland. Upon arriving at the ice cave, the formation and disappearance of the ice caves were clearly explained to us. It was a fun and interesting excursion, well worth it.

I really enjoyed this trip! Our guide, Gunner, was engaging, knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. The transport vehicle was awesome as well. The lava fields were otherworldly and the ice cave was super cool. I’d recommend this tour!
