Delightful and heartwarming

Mrs. Kanae welcomed us and took us to the local market where we had the chance to witness the locals selling fish and vegetables. She then took us to her lovely house and welcomed us in. Throughout the whole experience Kanae has been nothing but delightful to us. She modified the menu because my partner does not eat meat and she has responded to all our numerous questions on Japanese cuisine and culture. She enlightened me on the four basic pillars of Japanese cooking and i cannot be anything but deeply thankful to her for the time she shared with us. Grazie mille di cuore Kanae-san! Hope to see you again

Authentic home-style Japanese Cooking Experience

Kristy_S, Nov 2025
Loved our cooking class with Kanae in her beautiful home surrounded by mountains and falling snow. We were collected at the meeting point by Kanae and then driven first the local fish and food markets where we purchased our supplies for lunch. Surprisingly, a tranquil and quiet experience wandering through the market places. The fish markets back home where I come from are a bustling and stinky affair, but not here. Everything is beautifully presented , pristinely clean and calm. Then onto lunch. Kanae will teach you how to cook whatever you like and I had requested a seafood dish which turned out to be a lip smacking, umumsi bomb of home style salmon, spinach, miso and dashi. Will be cooking this at home. We loved our day! Highly recommend this activity. Thank you Kanae for a great day!!!!

Hokkaido Seafood Dish

Allen_S, Jul 2025
Kanae picked us up in her car at the subway station and drove to a local seafood market. She spoke very good English and was very friendly and helpful. We learned about all the different kinds of Hokkaido crabs and edible seaweeds. There was fresh giant Octopus and Scallops at the market. Back at her modern hillside home, she showed us how to prepare miso soup and spinach with crushed sesame seeds from scratch. The main dish was baked Hokkaido salmon with assorted vegetables and a miso paste sauce. It was delicious 😋.

Had an amazing time with Kanae-san. We visited the local fish/fruit/veg markets (which was amazing !!) and explained different fish and Ingredients and then went back to cook with Kanae-San - who is such a lovely lady 💜 had so much fun with her. She gave great instructions on how to cook. It has to be one of the nicest meals I have ever had. She is one the most kindest lady I have ever met - (thank you Kanae for an amazing morning 💜)

Learn cooking and culture from a local

Jacqueline_C, Dec 2023
Kanae was very personable. I was the only one in the experience that day so we walked around the local markets and she had explained things to me and answered my questions. After we were done walking around, we went back to her home in the hills with a beautiful view of the city. This was such a good experience because I got to see what a typical Japanese kitchen looked like. I've often taken cooking classes that are in cooking schools in different countries which have great but different vibes. It's not often you have the opportunity to experience a different culture authentically as a foreigner. Kanae had the recipes printed out so I could follow and help cook. While we cooked I asked her questions about Japanese culture and I was impressed by how much she knew about American current events. While this was meant to be a cooking lesson and we did cook, it felt like a cultural experience and I appreciated my conversation with her so much. The food was delicious and I'm making it when I get home. We made miso soup, spinach gomaae and chanchanyaki. Kanae is super sweet and a great conversationalist. I recommend this experience to anyone who is interested in learning how to cook local dishes or learning more about Japanese culture in general.

Fun Experience, Delicious Meal

The time with our host, Kanae-san, was wonderful. She's very pleasant and personable. The meal was delicious, and, we got to take hone the recipes for each dish we made.

If you like to cook, this is a ‘must try’ experience

Amazing tour with Kanea - she knows the local spots outside of the tourist markets and shares her love for food. Fantastic experience, highly recommend.

Great way to spend half a day in Sapporo

Taylor_D, Mar 2023
Kanae was an excellent guide and teacher. She took us to Sapporo Central Market, a nice alterative to the Nijo Ichiba market. Showed us how to prepare and cook gomae, agedashi tofu, miso soup with mushrooms, and two fish preparations. Had a lot of fun cooking and chatting Kanae.

The Guide was Informative and Interesting.

We enjoyed our half day tour with our guide, Kiyomi. She was very well informed about the area and well-versed in many topics. She even did a bit of research about our island in Hawaii so she could make comparisons. We really enjoyed learning how the historical clock works in the Clock tower. And, especially enjoyed visiting the locals' fish and vegetable markets with different offerings. The fresh Surimi (fishcake) was one of my favorites! But, it's hard to choose because the Shiroi Koibito Park Chocolate was also delicious! We're glad we did it.
