Itinerary
This small-group guided tour through Te Puia includes the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley, and Kiwi House. After hotel pickup in Rotorua, it’s just a 5-minute drive to your destination.
On arrival, visit a wood-carving studio, craft gallery, and flax-weaving display at Rotowhio Marae, a Māori village where you’ll learn about the history and traditional customs of New Zealand’s indigenous people.
After a peek at nocturnal kiwi birds inside a special enclosure, follow your guide past the impressive mud pools and steam vents of Te Puia. You’ll get a chance to see the daily eruption of the largest active geyser in the southern hemisphere: Pohutu Geyser, which reaches a height of 100 feet (30 meters).
Depart for a driving tour past Government Gardens, a public park situated on the edge of Lake Rotorua. Then complete your afternoon sightseeing with a photo stop at several volcanic lakes. See Lake Okareka as well as Lake Rotokakahi (Green Lake) and Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake), with interpretive views of Lake Tarawera, before drop-off at your hotel.

Very informative. It got me even more interested in the Māori culture & history. The bus tour of the lakes was really cool & Clive was amazing.

Thank you for the fantastic follow-up! We’re so glad to hear that the tour sparked a deeper interest in Māori culture and history—it is such a vital part of the landscape here. We’ll be sure to give Clive a huge shout-out; he’ll be thrilled to know his stories made the bus tour so memorable for you. We hope the beauty of the lakes stays with you for a long time

It was interesting but not exactly what I thought it would be. We never went to the blue and green lakes in the description. We got a Rotorua city tour which was nice. The cultural center was interesting but not enough about their life. It was more about the training school. The geyser is unpredictable so we only saw a small eruption. We saw 2 kiwi in the conservation center. It says small group which is true about our group, but then we are put into a large group at Te Puia. The best part was Linda, our driver. She was so nice and relatable.

Thank you for sharing your feedback on your Rotorua tour. We appreciate you taking the time to provide your honest perspective.
We're glad you found the city tour and the cultural center interesting, and that you enjoyed seeing the kiwi at the conservation center. We also understand your disappointment regarding the absence of the blue and green lakes, and the focus on the training school at Te Puia rather than a broader cultural experience. We will review our tour descriptions to ensure they accurately reflect the itinerary.
Unfortunately there are protest occurring by the Blue/green lakes that impact our tour and we apologise for not communicating to you prior to the tour
We also acknowledge your comments about the geyser eruption. Geothermal activity is indeed unpredictable, and while we strive to provide the best possible experience, nature sometimes has its own schedule.
We're particularly pleased to hear that you appreciated Linda, your driver. Her kindness and relatability are valuable assets to our team, and we will be sure to pass along your compliments.
We understand that the experience didn't entirely meet your expectations, and we apologize for any discrepancies between the tour description and the actual itinerary. We will use your feedback to improve our tour offerings and ensure a more consistent and satisfying experience for our guests.

Great little afternoon tour. Our driver was very knowledgeable and gave us a ton of information before handing us off to the tour guide at the art institute. Also a great guide. Amazing craftsmanship. The Geothermal Reserve is very interesting and they have a kiwi reserve too! Great afternoon.

We wondered how this tour would be as it started fairly low key, but as the tour progressed we found it well worth while. We enjoyed it, particularly seeing the volcanic geyser and the Maori carving. Glad we found it and chose it.

The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable. All aspects of the tour was well covered and very good value for money.

I was lucky enough to have an individual tour - as I was the only one booked in! The Tour Guide was amazing. He took me to see the small indiginous villages, telling me local stories all the while. We saw the rest of Rotorua township then visited Te Paui, where my guide showed me everything there was to see there, providing a wonderful commentry. At the conclusion, I was dropped back at my hotel.

I enjoyed the village and we were given plenty of time to look around. We also enjoyed the friendly and knowledgeable driver.
