Amazing experience learning about chocolate and the history of Costa Rica’s chocolate industry. The owner is great. The place was beautiful. The biggest surprise and one of the highlights of our trip was the river experience…we jumped off the rocks and floated down the river. It was fun for all. To end the experience we had lunch at a local family’s house and she made a killer “Casado” for us. For a group of 8, we had the entire place to ourselves. We had fun trying chocolates and making truffles. The tea from cacau beans was awesome.

Our group voted this day as our favorite activity! Our driver and tour guide were both amazing, telling us about the area and vegetation as we drove. We had a great time tasting and learning about chocolate and making our own truffles to bring home. Hands on and very fun. What we didn’t expect was how fun the swimming and waterfall portion would be! This can depend on the height of the river, but our group enjoyed jumping off rocks and floating down river….it was like being in a movie! Then lunch at Dona Luz’s house was the best meal of our trip! Such a memorable and fun day. Our guide really wanted us to learn about the culture and enjoy the experience. It’s a core memory for sure!

Amazing tour guide named Alberto and the lunch was so so good. The heart of our chocolate making/tasting was Carrie (Bruja) she taught us a lot and had such personality
so hard to think of words to say how much we enjoyed our experience. The waterfall dip was so refreshing too.

The chocolate experience and waterfall was one of our most memorable while visiting Costa Rica. Cara and Carrie made it a very special day of learning about cacao and making truffle followed by a relaxing visit to a beautiful waterfall and river nearby. We finished the tour with a fabulous homemade traditional lunch in a woman’s home. It was such an amazing adventure

Alberto picked us up at hotel and spent entire day with us. He was wonderful as was the entire experience! One of the best things of our trip to Costa Rica! It was actually emotional having lunch in someone’s home and her amazing cooking, learning about chocolate making and the cacao bean, seeing the beautiful land, the waterfall and just a fun, educational day!! One for the memories💕

Wow, what an amazing local experience in Manuel Antonio! While the waterfall, the chocolate making, and the home cooked lunch were all incredible, what trying made this a remarkable experience was Alberto, our tour guide. The personal touch he provided made us feel like we were being taken around by an old friend, not someone we just met for the first time! I can’t say enough positive things about him, would jump at the opportunity to take a tour with Alberto again!
If you have ANY doubts about taking this tour, please do yourself a favor and leave them behind, this was worth every penny and then some! Can’t wait to go back!

What a truly fantastic experience. Cara has orchestrated a fantastic, multi-episode adventure in Costa Rica. You begin being entranced by Kerri — tasting chocolate, preparing the ganache (sweetened cocoa + cream) to chill, then seeing the steps of chocolate from fruit --> bean --> fermentation/drying --> roasting --> peeling --> nibs --> liquid chocolate! By the time you're done the ganache is cool and you hand-make your own truffles while tasting different single-source chocolates. YUM.
Then to buoy your sugar high you toddle down a trail with a local guide (in our case, Alberto), who expertly leads you to a stunning waterfall with a perfectly cool pool to relax in, and the ability to climb up to a watering hole mid-way up the fall, if you dare! (We're glad we did, but it is truly at-your-own-risk and not for the faint of heart!)
After relaxing you head up the hill to Doña Luz's home for — hands down — the best meal we had in Costa Rica. Truly authentic, delicious, and we loved learning how to make tortillas with her. My children exclaimed, "this is the best chicken in the world!" And my kids are picky AF.
This will be my top recommendation in the Quepos area for any friends who visit Costa Rica.

I did this experience with my husband, daughter (7), and mom (71), and it was a hit with us all. Alberto picked us up at our hotel promptly and with a warm smile. He drove us on a dirt road to a tiny town along a river, where we were met by Carrie. We learned so much about the chocolate making process from Carrie, and we enjoyed tasting the results of processing beans from different regions.
After making our own truffles, we walked down to the river and swam for an hour or so. Alberto and Cara showed us where to jump from rocks and how to float in the current safely. My daughter swam in the river the whole time. The waterfall area is perfect for little ones, as it’s not too deep, and there is no current.
We hiked back up the hill to a home where our first traditional Costa Rican lunch was waiting for us (casados, picadillo, maduros, pollo). It was definitely in the top 3 meals we had in Costa Rica!
This experience is exactly what I was hoping for… something off the beaten path, but easy enough for my mom and daughter to enjoy.
Thank you to the team at Luna Vida for these beautiful memories!
Tips:
- Wear or bring water shoes, swimsuit, towel. There is a place to change, but I’d recommend wearing to save time.
- The walk down to the river is a bit steep, and the trek out to the swimming hole is over about 50 yards of river rocks, so keep that in mind if you have trouble walking. My husband wished he had brought his hiking pole.

Beautiful experience all around. I went with my son Henry and we both thought it was one of the best experiences during our week in the Quepos area. Loved Kerri’s chocolate experience, informative and delicious. The waterfall and cultural lunch were also a treat - everyone was so kind🌷
