Left this for another app too. People should know: After having read what felt like a million reviews, referring to reddit, tracking down personal accounts, and comparing notes, I finally settled to book this tour through viator. Honestly, I wish I had saved myself the time and just booked this RIGHT AWAY. Our guide, Sergio, was exceptionally knowledgeable, funny, and engaging. My niece and nephew loved the opportunity to try cacao, chocolate, and sugarcane. Much to my surprise, sugarcane is no longer growing in the area of Florida where I grew up, near to where my family now lives, so watching my niece and nephew try sugarcane juice for the first time became a treasured moment of my own. I was hesitant to book this your because I am the only one of our group who is over-the-moon about dark chocolate, bitter flavors, and black coffee. Fortunately, EVERYONE enjoyed the tour, so I wasn't left feeling all that guilty. I would easily recommend this tour. Thank you Sergio and team. :)

Fantastic experience. Very knowledgeable guide helped me understand the entire process from bean to bar. It was fascinating to see the cacao pods on the trees and then learn how they are fermented, dried, and roasted.
Response from Host, Apr 2026
Thank you for the fantastic review! We are so glad you found the "bean to bar" process fascinating and enjoyed seeing the cacao pods in their natural environment. It was a pleasure sharing the art of fermentation and roasting with you.

Great tour - despite a slight hiccup with our collection due to some last minute bookings, we got to the plantation in good hands, and enjoyed being shown around. The chocolate tasting and explanation of the growing and processing was great, as was the generous tastings! Also great to learn about coffee, even as a non-coffee drinkers

This tour was right across the street from our airbnb so we did it to start one of our mornings. It was actually pretty interesting! The chocolate tasting was my favorite part. I hate coffee but I decided trying their coffee was something I needed to do. I’m not going to Italy and not trying pasta, ya know? For being black coffee, it was actually not bad! If you need a short tour to fill some time, don’t skip this! Sergio was funny and knowledgable!
Response from Host, Mar 2026
We are so glad we were a convenient and interesting start to your day! It’s high praise that you enjoyed the coffee despite not being a coffee fan. Thank you for the recommendation and for the kind words about Sergio. We hope the rest of your stay was just as wonderful

Hands-on tour that incorporates all the senses! Our tour guide Sergio did a great job of explaining all about cacao and coffee and sugar cane! We learned some historical and cultural facts, how they are grown and cultivated and their medicinal/health benefits! My husband enjoyed grinding the cacao with the huge mortar and making sugar cane juice in the press! The chocolate and fruit sundaes were awesome and we were able to taste everything. Sergio was a personable and knowledgeable guide!

Sergio was the best. The tour was educational and interactive. It was fun to try the chocolate, coffee and sugar cane drinks. It was one of our favorite experiences in Costa Rica. And, we found out Sergio is also a wonderful musician! We are musicians, too, so this added a good connection. We heard him play at a local restaurant/bar near our hotel.

Excellent experience! A must-do while you’re in Manual Antonio! Our guide was very knowledgeable, and answered our many questions with in-depth responses. All of the cacao and coffee samples were delicious; the guide provides context for each sample and one gets a deeper understanding and appreciation of the process behind these popular foods/drinks. This was a brilliant tour for our whole family that also tied in history of chocolate and the region. I enjoyed this chocolate tour in Costa Rica. We got several samples of coffee and chocolate and learned about the process. I would say it was a little pricey for the length of time it was, but all of Costa Rica was quite expensive so this tour was not the outlier. I thought we would be walking through a whole farm of cacao trees, but it was really just one tree that they showed us that is just used for demonstration. Overall though, a unique experience that you can only get in certain parts of the world so it was worth it, and the chocolate was delicious!
Tricia_R, Dec 2024
SO glad my cousin and I did this tour!! We had so much fun on a rainy day. Sergio was informative and kind. The chocolate, coffee, and cocktail were delicious. We were able to relax, learn, and snack, which is all that I wanted to do. It was a wonderful experience and we recommend!
