This was the highlight of our trip to Puerto Rico! Tony was great. He asked why I would like to cook and of course I had to choose alcalpurrias& tembleque. He also showed us how to make arroz blanco con habichuelas y caldo de cerdo. Everything tasted great!! I love cooking and I can’t wait to make this for my friends and family! Tony shared so much history and information. He was funny and entertaining. His bed and breakfast is beautiful and historic. We ate on the patio and it was so cute! Everything was so great and so much more than I expected! When we come back to Puerto Rico I would love to take another class. Hands on is so much better than just looking at a recipe! I HD to give myself props because I already knew how to make achiote oil and sofrito but I learned so much. My husband also loved it. He helped cut the plantains and the root and we both made the alcalpurrias. It was definitely an amazing experience and my favorite part of Puerto Rico!

This cooking class in San Germán is honestly one of those experiences you keep thinking about long after it’s over. It feels less like a class and more like being welcomed into someone’s home, which makes sense since it’s set in this gorgeous historic house full of character and charm.
Tony, who is both the cooking instructor and the owner of the bed and breakfast where the class takes place, really makes the whole experience. He has this easygoing, welcoming style that instantly puts everyone at ease. You can tell he genuinely loves what he does. One thing that really stood out is how he asks about your food preferences ahead of time and actually builds the menu with you, which makes the whole experience feel personal right from the start. He explains everything clearly without making it feel technical or overwhelming, and he mixes in stories about Puerto Rican food and culture that make it all feel more meaningful. You’re not just following a recipe, you actually understand what you’re making.
The food is incredible. Everything is fresh, flavorful, and just feels thoughtfully put together. There’s a great mix of traditional Puerto Rican dishes and modern touches, so it stays interesting the whole time. And sitting down to enjoy everything at the end together is easily one of the best parts.
The setting really pushes it over the top. Being in a historic home that also doubles as his bed and breakfast makes it feel intimate and authentic in a way a typical cooking class just can’t match.
If you’re even remotely into food or just want a unique experience, this is absolutely worth it. It’s fun, welcoming, and just really, really good.

A cooking class with Tony is not to be missed! What a brilliant evening full of delicious food, history and Tony’s warm hospitality. We encourage anyone considering an addition to their vacation to schedule time with Tony! You won’t be sorry!

Tony explained the spices used in Puerto Rico and gave us history along the way while we learned to make authentic PR food. It was an experience we will never forget. Beautiful BNB that we will look to book next time we visit.

Tony was more than a pleasure to visit. It started by him calling us (my wife and I) the day before to ask for menu preferences. We are easy peasy and told him that we will cook whatever he wants us to.
Fast forward about 24 hours and now we are at Tony's front step. His BnB is in a beautiful Victorian Creole house from 1921 witn a bunch of history he will teach you. Super cool! Tony greeted us at the front gates and I instantly knew we were in for a good time......he was so happy and kind and looked just as excited as we did.
Tony instantly made us feel welcome in his house. He offered us some Sangria, gave us our aprons, and told us what we will be cooking. I am sure it will be different for everyone so I won't go too much into what we cooked, but I will say that we made a salad, fritters, a pork stew, and dessert. We had a blast cooking and had great conversation while doing so.
If Tony asks to go over the time, do it. He is so full of great conversation and the cooking itself takes some time. Good food isn't always fast food. But I will say the food we had with Tony was some of the best we've had in Puerto Rico so far.
This experience was one of the highlights of our honeymoon, and I encourage anyone to do this. Thank you Tony and we will definitely be coming back next time we are in Puerto Rico!

Very down to earth and lovely experience with Tony. We learned about traditional cooking and much more. It was delicious and we plan on returning again someday.

I had no idea how far from Rio Grand San German was! It took us over 3 hours each way. That said... it was well worth the trip! And we will do it again! The experience with Chef Tony was exactly what we had hoped for! He was gracious, knowledgeable and an amazing teacher. The menu was wonderful and his home beautiful (especially the garden/deck where we dined. We were even able to assist in the prep work for our meal which was very fun! The food was plentiful and delectable! Everything was so fresh and yummy! Tony even allowed us to stay an extra hour to learn more about the history of PR and this historic town. We went directly from Tony's to his local corner market to purchase the spices he recommended and showed us how to use.
I highly recommend this experience! Tony is a wonderful, accommodating host who obviously enjoys what he does!!

If you want to have a Fabulous time in a beautiful, antique home filled with tons of history, THIS is the place for you.
Not only did we learn so much about the house and town but also learned how to make some Yummy food. I am still thinking about the chocolate coconut tembleque (custard).
It is perfect for a Romantic Date Night experience, but also family friendly. Chef Tony was so Hospitable, Friendly, Funny and a Great Teacher. After our session we felt like family. Looking forward to doing this again in the future. This is a Must-Do!

Both the town and the host were absolutely wonderful! It was a huge treat to be able to spend time and learn to cook in this historic home. The host was so gracious and friendly.

This really is a private cooking class. It was just the two of us! Tony is very accommodating. The day before he asked what we wanted to cook. We said we wanted to learn authentic Puerto Rican dishes and prefer not something we would find on a menu. He did exactly that ! Plus he added a few little bites during the time to try.
We thought it would be hot in the kitchen but it was fine with a fan. He’s entertaining and taught us about certain spices and short cuts. He gave us a tour of his beautiful home which is also a
Bed and breakfast and his garden where he picked bananas and make a snack out of them. We ate the lunch out on the porch. Just perfect. We would highly recommend Tony you won’t be disappointed !

An absolute must do on any trip to PR. Tony was amazing- not only is his house in San Germán a historical gem, but the food we made was absolutely perfect. Couldn’t get any more authentic. Plus he filled with knowledge of the history of the island. One of our favorite vacation experiences for sure. Oh and be sure to vote for him in the election he will save PR!
Response from Host, Oct 2024

We loved learning the history of the food, the house, and the island. We loved hearing his family stories as we cooked some of his traditional meals. He served us at the end and let us enjoy the space and food. Tony was VERY hospitable and the food was DELICIOUS!

Absolutely amazing Experience! This is what my husband and I like to do whenever we travel, cook with a local. We spoke with Tony a few days beforehand and he offered us the option to do it as a cooking class or for him to do the cooking and serve us. We definitely wanted to be hands on. He was extremely flexible with the menu options. We wanted to learn local cuisine and he and came up with an excellent menu for us to make together.
He was prepared when we arrived and we got right into making food! He was so friendly telling stories, cracking jokes, and making sure we were doing ok. We got distracted at times and so it ended up taking longer than expected but we were prepared to spend all day there and we had so much fun the time flew by! When we were done cooking, he served us on his beautiful patio.
We also got the chance to chat and then took a tour of his bed and breakfast that he runs in this beautiful unique historic building. I loved our time with Tony and would definitely recommend this as a must do for a lot of our friends and family. So down to earth, such a sweet palce, and easily our favorite thing we've done in puerto rico! Also the best local food we have had here too!
What to expect:
- No A/C, it will be hot
- No set schedule, do yourself a favor and don't have somewhere to be afterwards so you can relax and enjoy the experience
- This isn't a super structured class with a written down recipe. This is part of why I loved it, because using the memory of a recipe as a suggestion is how I like to cook. I did make sure to take notes though.
Local foods we made:
- chaote shrimp salad
- almojábanas (fried dough balls)
- mofongo
- cod in a sofrito onion tomato sauce
- fried pork
- arroz y habichuelas (rice & beans)
- coconut & mango tembleque (like panna cotta)
Everything was delicious!

Chef Tony is EXCELLENT ! We booked this experience for our daughter's birthday and the whole event was AMAZING ! From the minute we met him, Chef Tony was completely engaged, made sure we were safe in his restaurant-level kitchen AND had FUN all at the same time ! Chef Tony customized the menu to foods that she loves, including fresh fruit, rice, plantains (made into pinones), salad, sushi, pork as main course and tembleques (pudding-like) for dessert, and was willing to customize the experience on the spot if we wanted last-minute changes. He showed us his B and B "mansion" with great pride and joy. We loved his chatter as well as his friendly way while we were preparing the food. Would ABSOLUTELY and POSITIVELY recommend this experience !! The food was fresh and SO, SO, SO tasty ! THANKS Chef Tony !

We are immensely grateful to Chef Tony for an experience that was not only culinary, but humane. From the previous call to know our tastes, to receiving us with a glass of sangria and a sincere smile in your home, every detail felt thought with affection.
Preparing together almojabanas, fresh green salad, gray rice and an amazing stuffed pork loin was special... but the most valuable thing was the conversations, patience, and the feeling of sharing something meaningful.
Thank you, Tony, for opening up your kitchen, your time and your heart. We take much more than an exquisite menu; we take a souvenir that we will treasure. Fully recommended.
