The organisation of the tour operators in Rabaul was complete mayhem. It took an hour for us to be shown to our van, consequently leaving an hour late. Our 3 hour tour only took 2 hours! No one complained, but we were glad to get out of the van due to the overwhelming amount of potholes (craters) in their roads. Our tour guide, Charlie, was very attentive.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and we’re sorry your tour on 14th June didn’t meet expectations.
On cruise days Rabaul often sees 600+ guests disembark at once into a small port area. On the 14th the ship arrived later than scheduled, which compressed our normal staggered departure times and caused delays at sign-up. That’s on us to manage better, and we sincerely apologise that you waited an hour and your 3-hour tour was cut short to 2 hours.
We’re glad Charlie looked after you well — he’s one of our senior guides and we’ll pass on your compliment.
What we’ve changed since:
Extra check-in staff on port days to sign guests up faster and get vans moving on time.
Staging system so each van departs as soon as it’s full, instead of waiting for all guests.
Road updates: We’re now briefing guests before departure about ENB road conditions and adjusting routes where possible to reduce the worst sections.
We appreciate your patience that day. East New Britain’s history and culture are worth the bumpy roads, but we know your time is valuable and we have to deliver the full experience you booked.
If you’re ever back in Rabaul, please contact me directly. I’d be glad to host you on a complimentary tour to make this right.
Kind regards,
Dominic Tulo

The PNG Tour Group need to reorganise the way the run their business. We pre purchased and paid for a 3-4 hour tour. After we docked in Rabaul we had to line up with guests who had not prepaid or booked. after waiting for close to 30 minutes. Our driver, David, was sick and not fit to drive (one of the guests on our bus gave him a Panadol). Our guide Dora was pleasant but did not give us much information about where we visited. To make matters worse decided to chew a Beatle nut on our return journey to the ship. The tour lasted only 2 1/4 hours.

Thank you for your feedback, and I sincerely apologise that your tour on 14th June fell well below standard.
You’re right — prepaid guests should not be lining up with walk-ins, tours should run for the full time advertised, and guides must be professional at all times. We failed you on all three.
What happened that day: 14th June was an unusually congested port call with late ship arrival. Our check-in system couldn’t cope and we had a last-minute crew change due to illness. That’s context, not an excuse. The experience you described is not acceptable and not the PNG Tour Guide standard.
Addressing your specific points:
1. Check-in delays: We’ve now separated prepaid and walk-in lines and added extra staff on cruise days so prepaid guests board first.
2. Driver health: No guest should ever feel unsafe. We’ve tightened our crew health checks and standby driver system. David has been stood down until medically cleared. I apologise you had to witness that.
3. Guide professionalism: Dora was not properly prepared for that run and her conduct fell short of our policy. All guides are being re-briefed on commentary standards and our no betel nut policy while in uniform/on duty. This will be enforced.
4. Tour duration: 2¼ hours for a 3-4 hour product is not acceptable. We’re auditing all timing and routes to ensure full value is delivered.
We appreciate your honesty. Feedback like this is how we improve. I’d like to make this right — please email me directly so I can arrange a full refund for your group and a complimentary tour if you ever return to Rabaul.
We’re proud of East New Britain and the experiences we deliver here. On 14th June we let you down. We’re fixing it.
Kind regards,
Dominic Tulo

Well-paced and thorough tour of Rabaul. Mini van was little tight, but the AC worked. Debbie was an excellent guide.
