Mohomed Kareem was an excellent guide: knowledgable and accommodating to our needs. We were a little worried to start out with what seemed a rather gimmicky intro by a purveyor of spices and oils...but after that he showed us multiple excellent artifact, leather and rug and textile shops and helped us negotiate what felt like a good deal for a piece we are excited to have in our home. Would not hesitate to ask him to join us again in future when we have a better idea of items we want to source for a renovation project. Many thanks, Kareem!! :)

Private Tour didn't meet expectations

Positives The guide took us all over the souks, down countless alleyways that we likely wouldn’t have found on our own. We explored areas that may have felt intimidating independently, yet we felt safe throughout. The guide was pleasant, friendly, and knowledgeable about the area. We definitely saw far more than we would have managed by ourselves. Negatives We were dropped off at around six different shops (oil, carpets, leather, copper, wood, silk) and then collected afterward. The guide was clearly well known to the vendors, and it felt as though there was an expectation to purchase something in each shop. If you’re hoping for active help with haggling, you may need to make that clear in advance, as the guide wasn’t always nearby while we were browsing. My husband was interested in buying a carpet, but the shop we were taken to had astronomical prices. By that stage, I didn’t feel inclined to spend time negotiating prices that were roughly triple what we could pay for something similar imported at home. Two coffee shops that were not part of the “tour” were hurried past, which felt a little unnecessary and actually been something we would have liked to do as it was a private tour. There was a strong emphasis on items being handcrafted locally, but a fair bit of what we saw did not appear to be locally made, despite being presented as such. It becomes hard to know the difference and was not brought up in the tour. Although the tour allowed us to see more than we would have on our own, we may have preferred wandering independently without the pressure to buy from each category of shop. Overall While the tour provided a comprehensive introduction to the souks and gave us confidence navigating the maze of alleyways, it felt more retail-focused than exploratory at times. For those comfortable exploring independently, a self-guided wander might offer a more relaxed experience.

Rachid was a great tour guide. His English was very good and clear. He answered our questions well; pointed out things of interest along the way; and safely navigated us around the Souk. He told us at the outset that, although we would go into a spices/herbalist-type shop, we were under no pressure at all to purchase. So we felt comfortable and enjoyed hearing the ‘spiel’. We wanted to buy good spices anyway, so we purchased from here and got some other goodies too! The tour was fascinating, with lots of filming or photo opportunities as we walked. Thank you, Rachid!

BEYOND EXPECTATIONS Shopping Tour with Yahya Lotfi

My thoughts before the tour was that this would be a here's this shop and here's this shop and here are some tips for negotiating price. I couldn't have been more wrong. Our tour guide, Yahya Lotfi, obviously loves people and his profession. We were given an absolutely fun, informative, knowledgable, historical, and cultural tour of the souk area as only a seasoned professional could do. What you can expect is beyond the basics of very interesting shops, artisans, and specialty vendors but also the history and culture intertwined with the tour. This made the tour so much more intereresting to have more background of the everyday lives of the local people. The cost of the tour for our family of four was well worth the price, believe me. And ask for Yahya Lotfi, if you can. He will make you feel very much at home.

Yahya is a wonderful guide. He’s hilarious, laid back, and customizes the tour based on your interests. There is plenty of history mixed in, but done I away that teens in our group engaged. The areas he took us to were away from the tourist. All of the business owners were kind, helpful, and not pushy at all. We would have NEVER found these shops on our own. If you are coming for spices, argan oil based products, teas, etc… the shop Herbalism will blow your mind. You learn so much during the presentation. This is the only place we experienced Berber tea as opposed to mint (which we all love). It tastes WONDERFUL. We enjoyed every stop and left with hands full of bags. NOTE: Our heaviest bags were delivered to us at the last stop of the tour so we didn’t have to carry them. IMPORTANT: We overlooked that we should bring food with us. However, Yahya was kind enough to have chicken shawarma wraps delivered to the jewelry shop we were at. They were so good!!! We ordered them again the next day. I could write a book about this tour, but I won’t. Just do yourself a favor and BOOK NOW!👍🏾

An absolutely wonderful and memorable experience! I cannot rate Hassan highly enough, he was just superb and so knowledgeable and he took me to the best places for the purchases I was looking for! I had a list and he advised that he knew exactly what shops to bring me to and he guaranteed authenticity. I am a solo female traveller and it was my first day in Marrakesh so he made me feel completely at ease. He also spent over 3 hours with me bringing me to every inch of the Medina with a vast knowledge of the history of the place. I couldn’t have succeeded in navigating the more detailed parts of the Medina without him and he secured some bargains for me also in my purchases haggling down the prices further for me. He was a wonderful man and I highly recommend him. Thankyou!
