Fascinating visit to a cacao farm with a wonderful guide who knew lots about the medicinal uses of the native plants. Gorgeous waterfall. Highly recommend

Braulio is an amazing guide. He is knowledgeable, interesting, and has an intimate connection to everything he shares. His English is excellent, and he has a refreshingly positive worldview. The trip to the Bribri family farm was enlightening, and it was very fun to make chocolate from scratch...and then, of course, drink and eat it! The trip to the waterfall was truly something worthwhile. It had been raining a lot in the previous days, so the trail was muddy, and there were some stairs to navigate, but he was very patient and kind, helping us manage it all (literally - holding arms and keeping us upright!) so we could fulfill our dream of swimming in the waterfall waters. He has new, clean transportation, and it was extremely convenient that he picked us up and dropped us off directly from our hotel and another couple from their airb&b. If you love plants, history, chocolate, and waterfalls, THIS is the trip to take and THIS for sure is the person to take it with. I also loved that we were home by 1 PM so that there was plenty of the day left to do other things.

This tour was one of the most meaningful experiences of our entire Costa Rica trip. What made it so special was our guide Braulio — whose grandmother was Bribri — so the stories, language, and traditions he shared came straight from his own roots. You could truly feel that this was not “just another tour” for him, but something deeply personal.
Braulio is incredibly kind, patient, and full of love for nature and culture. His deep knowledge made everything come alive — from cacao preparation and medicinal plants to everyday life of the Bribri people. He shared not just facts, but genuine connections and respect for the community and the environment.
We enjoyed this experience so much that we joined another tour with him as well, and it was just as wonderful. Being with Braulio always feels relaxed, safe, and deeply enriching. We felt welcomed and well taken care of the entire time, and the pace was perfect even with a child.
If you want an authentic cultural experience guided by someone who truly lives what he shares — we cannot recommend this tour (and Braulio!) enough.

Fun mix of activities. We learned a lot about cocoa, medicinal plants, and the chocolate making process, as well as the indigenous Bribri culture. Getting to cool off by swimming in the waterfall was a nice bonus.

We absolutely loved this personal tour. The guide was very knowledgeable, and educated use on alot of the culture of the area. The lunch was the best tour lunch we had ever had. The food was hot and delicious. The fruit was fresh and tasted great. Don’t miss this tour!

Awesome experience, guide was amazing spoke english fluently, knew his stuff, and was passionate about the culture and plants growing there, talked to us about his future plans for his farm and everything, very friendly! We learned a lot, came and picked us up from our hostel and dropped us back there afterwards, even helped us by bringing us to a pharmacy and translated my symptoms to the pharmacist ( had eaten something not so good the night prior lol) would 100% recommend to anyone!

This was easily one of the most memorable experiences we had in Costa Rica. If you’re anywhere near Talamanca, and want to immerse yourself in the local culture, do not skip the chocolate-making tour with Braulio and the Bribri tribe.
Braulio is a wonderful guide who is able to speak on the history, agriculture, and current culture of the area. He welcomed us and walked us through the entire chocolate-making process the traditional Bribri way — roasting, grinding, and tasting raw cacao straight from the source. He also discussed Bribri history and demonstrated all the different kinds of plants and their medicinal properties.
What really made it special was Braulio’s way of weaving in the spiritual and cultural side of everything. He talked about the tribe’s connection to nature, the role of women in cacao, and how chocolate is more than just food. We then had a simple yet delicious lunch served in the traditional leaf bowl by the Bribri women.
We also had an opportunity to hike to the sparkling waterfall. Although it was too rough for swimming, the short hike was beautiful and full of frogs and plants.
This experience is well worth it and will be unforgettable!

We got to learn about the Bribri culture. I absolutely loved learning about all the plants & what they use them for. Making chocolate was such an amazing experience. The food was delish & it was def an authentic experience. The waterfall was a HIKE but worth it. Let me elaborate - the hike wasn’t long in distance just the hike itself & humidity. No regrets tho. Our guide was VERY knowledge able. I asked a ton of questions & get was so informative. Def recommend !

This tour was a highlight of our trip! Bruillio was informative, fun, and joyful. You can tell he loves what he does and has a great relationship with the families he works with. We can tell our friends that we made chocolate!

What an unforgettable experience! We had such an amazing time immersing ourselves in the deep-rooted history of the Bri Bri, discovering the power of medicinal plants, and crafting chocolate from scratch—tasting it fresh was pure magic! The delicious homemade lunch was such a special treat, and to top it all off, visiting the waterfall was an absolute highlight. I even took the leap—literally—jumping in for the first time, a memory I’ll cherish forever! Huge thanks to our incredible guide, Braulio, for sharing his knowledge and making this journey so enriching!

Braulio was an excellent guide. He did not only made the cacao tour with us, he showed us a Tucan and lots of frogs, which was amazing. We were allowed to make cacao by ourselves which was a great experience.

The highlight of our time on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica was this experience. Braulio provided a personal experience that was much more than we thought we would get. My husband & our two daughters (18 & 30) enjoyed every minute. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I had an incredible time with this experience. My guide, Brauilo was fantastic and shared insights about the Bri Bri culture, including traditional uses of natural medicines. The chocolate making process was educational and ended with a delicious treat. This was a truly immersive way to connect with the Bri Bri culture and I really appreciate it.

Braulio’s tour was amazing! It was our favorite part of our trip to Costa Rica. He has such great knowledge of BriBri culture and life in Costa Rica more generally. The experience taught us a lot about food, culture, and the natural surroundings; a must do for anyone interested in learning about the native history of the area, and cacao!

This tour was so fun! We visited the bri bri people and learned how chocolate is made, we also got to be a part of the process- from roasting the beans, to crushing them, to making the chocolate paste, to turning into hot chocolate, and finally tasting our creation! Our tour guide Braulio was amazing and entertaining! He was so knowledgeable and pointed out so many herbs, plants and animals. Then we hiked to a nearby waterfall and swam for a bit, the water was so cool and refreshing. Highly recommend!!

Braulio was a wonderful guide.
He gives great history about the area and it's people. He was able to identify the botanical and give us information about its use. We were lucky and had a wonderful rain free day. After the tour he was kind enough to take us to a wonderful place for lunch and then a quick stop at the beach.

Amazing tour, great value. Includes education on BriBri culture and history, medicinal plants, chocolate making and a waterfall. Plus we got a homemade delicious lunch our kids loved. One of our favorite tours from 5 weeks in Costa Rica. Don’t wait, if Braulio is available book it now you won’t regret it!!
Dustin_F, Jun 2024
We were met by the tour guide, and during the short drive, he gave us a wonderful foundation of the area, the tribes, and the history. We sampled numerous plants, fruits, etc., that grow locally during our visit. We then had a chance to make some chocolate and headed to the waterfall. It's as much a tour of local fruits and the like as much as a chocolate exploration - which was better, in my opinion. We loved it -the kids loved it, and the waterfall was a perfect ending.

We did a normal touristy chocolate tour AND this one. This one was much better. Although it did not discuss the way chocolate is made today, we had the pleasure of learning about the Bribri's people's relationship with both chocolate and many other plants. Also, the actual chocolate tasting was better because we got to try the chocolate in a banana and as hot chocolate.

Hands down the best tour of all Puerto Viejo! Super immersive and eye opening. Lots of information about the culture and indigenous tribes in Bribri. The tour guide is the best and very fun. The waterfall in the end of the trip was beautiful. Not a long hike.
I would come back just for the vibes😎

Our tour guide, Braulio, was very personable and competent. We enjoyed his "Show and Tell" of the BriBri culture and of the chocolate making process. It was great to be able to participate in the making and tasting of chocolate. We also loved the BriBri man and women who helped our guide with his demonstrations and language teaching. We learned much about the medicinal plants that our guide showed us as well. Make sure you bring some money along for the lovely hand crafted souvenirs and chocolate!
Another highlight of the tour was our swim in the waterfall. Braulio was very willing to take pictures of and video our swim. It was a very worthwhile and enjoyable tour that you shouldn't miss!

Braulio was a very knowledgeable and experienced guide on the history and culture of the indigenous people of Puerto Viejo.
His explanation on the cacao fruit and the creation of pure dark chocolate paste was a lot of fun. We were very hands-on during the whole experience.
We explored the poisonous frog sanctuary, strolled through the plant field and learn all about the different species of plants and their health and medical properties.
Keep an eye out for the Old-man whole likes pranking you with fake snakes and lizards(he was a hoot).
The hike to the waterfall was unexpected but turned out to be a lot of fun and worth the trip. A tranquil spot with a low tide riverbank linked to a modest waterfall. We even got to see a female Sloth climbing her tree near by. We would definitely recommend and would do it again.

Our guide Braulio was both personable and extreme knowledgeable. The BriBri farm and family were warm and welcoming as we were taken on a comprehensive tour of their generational farm. The medicinal plants, chocolate and waterfall were wonderful.
Our young daughter was celebrating a birthday and at the waterfall, the host family serenaded her with Felix Cumpleaños, complete with a piano accompaniment!! Their hospitality was amazing and the experience was great for kids and adults alike. Highly recommend this experience as the tour support the indigenous people of this region.
