    This is amazing and delicious!

    Simon_R, Jan 2026
This was amazing! Ansel is a very nice person and she really took time to explain us all of the cacao history, the tree, the fruit, everything you wanna know before it starts with DIY chocolate making which was awesome! I felt a bit overloaded with all this information but I loved it. She showed us how you process the cacao bean in the right order step by step and how you treat the beans correctly. At the end we all had made some chocolate to take home and for me this was not the last time I make chocolate by my own. So be careful, this can make you addicted not only to eat but also to make cacao/chocolate on your own :-D

    Response from Host, Jan 2026

Thank you so much for such a fun and thoughtful review! I’m really happy you enjoyed the world of cacao — from the tree and fruit all the way through to making your own chocolate. It’s true, there’s a lot to take in, and I’m glad it felt exciting. It was a pleasure to guide you through the process step by step, and I love hearing that you left inspired to keep making chocolate on your own. You’re right, it can become a delicious (and creative!) addiction 😄 Thank you again for joining us, and you’re always welcome back for another cacao adventure!

She was super nice extremely informative. I learned so much. Best of all I'm going to try making my own chocolate. Ancel gave me confidence. I throughly enjoyed every minute.

    Response from Host, Nov 2025

oh, that's so cool Rhea! I'm so delighted to hear that. And YES! You go for it, I have absolute confidence in your abilities. Thank you.

If you have the time, do this tour!

    Melissa_P, Sep 2025
This is a great way to learn about how they make chocolate in Costa Rica and around the world. We ended up being on the tour for 3.5 hours as the host provided an abundance of information so take this into consideration when planning. In the end we did make chocolate bars that you get to keep.

    Response from Host, Oct 2025

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! 🌿 I’m glad you enjoyed diving deep into the world of chocolate and that you left with your own handmade bars. Normally the tour runs about 2.5–3 hours, but every group is unique — sometimes the conversation and curiosity take us a little longer, which sounds like it happened with yours! I’m happy it was a rich and memorable experience for you.

Fascinating & great value. Ansel is a delight; a font of wisdom & knowledge presented with passion & humour. I will be recommending her to my favourite podcaster, Blindboy, as a guest. I wish I'd recorded it to remember. Ansel - write a book!

    Response from Host, Oct 2025

Thank you so much for such kind words! 🌟 It means a lot to hear that you found the class both fascinating and fun — sharing cacao’s story with passion and humor is a real joy for me. Blindboy as a podcaster guest recommendation made me smile — what an honor! And who knows, maybe one day there will be a book. 😉 I’m so glad the experience stayed with you, and I truly appreciate you sharing this lovely review.

The owner of the chocolate factory is lovely and very knowledgable about Costa Rica and about chocolate making. It was a really enjoyable and highly informative experience. It was also great to have a hands on experience of chocolate making techniques. I would definitely recommend this activity.

    Response from Host, Mar 2025

Thank you Ruth for joining me in the chocolate kitchen! It was an absolute pleasure making chocolate with you both. Very happy that we had such a fun class and the conversation flowed with laughter. I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip in beautiful Costa Rica!

Best Tour in Costa Rica !!!

    Nora_G, Mar 2025
The tour was recommended to us by a girl and we were very enthusiastic. There was not a single negative point that we could complain about. The location is not far from Puerto Viejo and very easy to reach on foot, for those who do not have a scooter or bike. The woman was very very nice and could explain a lot of interesting information about cocoa but also about all sorts of things. We made a lot of chocolate and could eat and keep as much as we wanted. It was the most interesting tour we have done in Costa Rica and Panama. It's 100% worth the money. We recommend it to everyone, even for those who don't like chocolate so much.

    Great experience

    Response from Host, Feb 2025

    Not what I expected

    Adela_J, Apr 2024
The lady seemed passionate about chocolate making but this class was basically hours of just listening to her talk about the origins of chocolate which got pretty boring after 1 hour. I had hoped for more of a hands on experience which we barely got to do. She let us crack open some cacao beans and that was it. Eventually we got to taste the chocolate which she literally told us would be gross because they are not meant to be eaten. Even the hot chocolate she made for us was bitter and had no flavor.

    Educational

    Ourfa_M, Mar 2024
Amazing experience! Learned so much about cocoa and its connections to nature and humans! The history and how its the bar we buy today! Very interactive experience- we got to try every step of chocolate making and taste them too! Highly recommend

We had the most magical time. The farm was great. We got so hands on and learned so much! It was a full 3 hours of education, exploration and chocolate making!

    Take this class!

    Cynthia_F, Jan 2024
Highly recommend! This class was interactive and very informative. Ansel provided in-depth information and history, and answered all of our questions. You’ll walk away with a new perspective of chocolate.

    Great experience!

    Carmen_J, Jan 2024
Really enjoyed this class. We learned so much more than we could’ve expected. Much respect and appreciation for the teacher’s kindness and awareness of the history of the cacao plant as well as the detrimental impacts of globalization on the lands, animals, and the people who grow cacao trees across the equator.

A very interesting and enjoyable way to spend a morning

Such a great day, an introduction to the cacao three trough a genuine warmth in the storytelling. And lovely chocolate to go with it, we even made it ourselves!

    Wonderful experience

We had a wonderful experience with the cocoa tour. The owner is fabulous and we learned so much and made our own dark chocolate candy.

    Interesting.

    Melody_S, Apr 2022
Beware!!! There is no milk chocolate only dark chocolate!!! I have to say that this was an experience. The instructor is AMAZING!! She is the sweetest person you could meet. Down to earth, friendly and knowledgeable. But, this wasn't what I expected. It is literally in the outdoors, flies are EVERYWHERE even in the ingredients we were using to make chocolate and it is unsanitary. There were cats literally on the working stations where we were making chocolate and nothing was wiped down or sanitized. There were big animals (dogs) running loose and made me quite uncomfortable. I get it, it is a farm, but if you are running a business and someone is afraid of your animals the proper thing to do is put them away if your client/visitor is uncomfortable who is paying to be there.

    Cacao/chocolate experience

    4xpwy6hykd, Dec 2021
Ancel was very knowledgeable about the history of cacao in Costa Rica. I was fascinated by the evolution of cacao’s usages. She also led me through the process of turning cacao into chocolate and the different paths that process could take yielding different results. If you want a real educational experience and end up with some delicious chocolate at the end I highly recommend this experience.

    Fantastic and truly unique!

    Athina_G, Feb 2026
What a great experience and how educational! Be sure to do it! In addition, a farm tour is also offered, which is simply magical!

Thank you so much for your wonderful words! I’m really happy to hear that you found the experience both memorable and educational. It means a lot that you would recommend it. And I’m so glad you enjoyed the farm tour as well — it truly is a magical part of the cacao journey. Thank you for joining us, and you’re always welcome back! 🌿🍫

An interesting tour with a bit too much information.

    Julian_T, Nov 2025
The tour gets 4 stars out of 5 from me because the practical part was super great designed. The owner shows you with passion how her chocolate is made. 1 star deduction because the tour was too long in my view. In the beginning we stood for 50 minutes on the side of the road under a cocoa tree and got endless information about cocoa trees and much more. I found this extremely long-winded and 10 minutes would have been enough. Everything else was totally great. We were allowed to powder beans, grind cocoa and finally got our own chocolate bar.
