After a little hiccup with cab driver dropping us at the wrong Family Mart, and our tour guide rescuing us, we got started.
My friend and I were on our first trip to Japan, and booked this tour because it was recommended by another friend. This market is supposed to be fabulous and it is. But even better was our guide Yasuko. Having lived several years in Washington state, she's now in the Kyoto area and is of Japanese heritage. She definitely knows her stuff! We started out walking an area with suggestions for restaurants, learned local history, and then headed toward the market .
What fun! As we were the only two on the tour, we could stop where we wanted and ask questions as needed.
We tasted tofu skin, cuttle fish cakes, plum juice, seaweed soup, and more. The sake was a favorite.
Yasuko also helped my friend find a reliable ATM.
Thanks to Yasuko and Viator! Highly recommended.

Honestly skip it. 2 hours into the tour and we’d only tasted 2 things. Didn’t realize this included so much walking around without… food. In fact, we wasted so much time slowly wandering around, that food stores in the market started closing and we apparently didn’t even get what the guide usually gets for people. The guide pointed out free samples that you could’ve found on your own. And the options were sort of a “what do you want to try” type thing. Had I know it would be a choose your own adventure for food, I would’ve simply walked through the market on my own. Especially given that it isn’t a private tour and if others in your group do or don’t want something… I guess you have to go with that. I now see that some people in the comments like that they got to choose their own food, but I do food tours to find things I wouldn’t otherwise know to buy. The guide was sweet, but this needs some better structure. Also the included picture taking never happened. The guide didn’t offer to take pics, nor pointed out good picture spots. That part of the description should be removed. Overall, if you want to choose your own food, just walk through the market on your own and hit the free samples along the way.

Takuma was great! Any food lovers should certainly consider booking this tour as it was a good value with small group feel.

My wife and I came to the Meetup spot for this tour on May 16. We arrived 15 minutes before the meet time and waited, and waited and by 20 minutes after the tour was supposed to start neither the tour guide nor any other guest showed up. We were not notified that the tour was canceled. It took a great deal of time and energy and an expensive taxi ride to get to the spot and we were extremely disappointed at the no-show for this tour. We even tried calling the phone number for the operator of the tour and the line was continuously busy and they were unreachable.

Kazu was a fantastic guide - we had a walk around the area first and she explained much of the history. The food in the market was all delicious plus there were lots of free samples on top of all the food we had.

Very enjoyable. Varied food samples and our guide was helpful and nice. Skip lunch before because it is a lot of sampling!

A friendly tour guide. We went at a leisurely pace. Enjoyed trying all the different kinds of Japanese foods. Learned some Japanese words

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the market. Much to see and explore; so much easier with a guide to point out and show the specific sites and stalls that as a tourist would be so easy to miss.
Mnori, our guide was fantastic. Her English was excellent and her knowledge both of food and historical background, exemplary. If you come to Kyoto, do this early so you can become familiar with the area which would put you in good stead for an enjoyable and productive trip.
Thank you for a wonderful time.

My wife and 2 teenage kids had a great experience on this food tour. Takuma was very knowledgeable and kind. You better come hungry for this one. There was so much food included in the tour no one left hungry. It was also nice having a guide for this tour due to the fact that there were some different rules in this market than other we have been to before. One was that you were supposed to eat inside the area where you purchased the food.
