On a cloudy day in Hoi An, we were picked up by Trang at our hotel by bicycle.
This was slightly unexpected and involved riding through the very busy roads of Hoi An - which was slightly terrifying due to the chaos. Our first stop was Basket Boat riding at a Coconut Grove which was nice but very touristy. Back on the bike, we thankfully headed into the country through rice paddy fields, which was very beautiful. We then came upon a huge water buffalo with his owner and were encouraged to climb on and have a ride. What an experience! Back on the bike, we rode on to Tra Quay Eco Village. I was gobsmacked as I was greeted by garden after garden of home grown vegetables, herbs and flowers. Trang then took us on a tour of the gardens with a local farmer who showed us the tricks of the trade. A very funny farmer. Back inside the restaurant to learn how to make rice paper and cook some Vietnamese food. These were up with our favourite activities and the food was amazing.
A highly rated day, full of activities and some of the most delicious, fresh food from the gardens, that we have eaten.

The whole day was a lot of fun. Trang our guide/main hostess for the day was an absolute delight to spend time with. We took a ride in the basket boats, took a short ride on a water buffalo, toured the garden and did a bit of planting and watering as part of a demonstration of how they manage their garden, visited the market while Trang bought cooking supplies and made 3 different yummy dishes. We also got to do a bit of biking, (but it was a fairly quiet day for them so I don't know if that would have been possible on a day when they have more guests).
It was a perfect day. Thank you to Trang and all of the wonderfully friendly people who hosted us at Tra Que Water Wheel!!

This activity has been one of the highlights of our trip to Vietnam and I cannot but fully recommend it to anyone visiting Hoi An! Our guide Kun was full of energy, good vibes and knowledge of the local culture, cooking and farming traditions. We started with a tour of the market where Kun talked us through the local products. We cycled our way to the farm, where we had so much fun preparing Vietnamese pancakes and spring rolls. We even did our own rice paper and planted greens in the farm, finishing off with a bamboo boat trip. If you want to have an authentic Vietnamese experience, you should definitely try this!

Such a fulfilling and rewarding day experiencing life as a farmer! Our guide Sun was super enthusiastic and motivating as we planted crops, learnt about the farm, rode a water buffalo, ate fresh water coconut on a basket boat, made race paper and then cooked up a delicious lunch together. The highlight was definitely making the rice paper, seeing the techniques and traditional ways of creating such an important food in daily lives.
We left with a full heart and stomach, along with amazing memories. Highly recommend this!!
Thanks,
Michael & Kim
