This is a trip well worth doing. We started a bit later than scheduled due to a request from a fellow traveller, around noon, but that was never an issue. Our guide, Harry, made sure we arrived in Porvoo safe and sound (it was not a company tour van, rather we joined a public excursion bus to and back from Porvoo).
Porvoo was small but charming. Harry proved to be an excellent guide, explaining concisely the history of Porvoo (and Finland in general) as we walked from one sight to the other. He definitely has an interesting personal perspective that separated him from the usual tour guides.
We visited the shores of the river, the old town, castle hill and some parks. There was ample time to grab some food and souvenirs during our free time, and I was able to a little exploration on my own as well. It was never too crowded, and the locals are very kind people.

Our guide knew nearly nothing about the town. He would tell us something and when we’d ask for a bit more detail he’d say”I’m not knowledgeable on that” or “you’ll have to buy a book to learn that” or “I think so - maybe”. He even got dates wrong. He said the cathedral was built in the 1200’s and the man who worked in the cathedral said it was the 1400’s. The map in the town showed 19 locations to see and he only took us to a handful of those places. Waste of a lot of money!

Visiting Porvoo was great. A little history, nature walk, quaint town with treats at bakery, visit chocolate shop and free time for shopping.
The guide we had was really great.
The bad part was the transportation. Our bus broke down, waited for one bus after another to have room to pick us up on the road unsuccessfully. Eventually guide ordered us an Uber ride, which was great. Then returning home, bus ride that was scheduled didn’t work out, so our group walked to another town and luckily our guide bought us tickets to get back to Helsinki. He did his best to get us there and back, but it took 90 min longer for this trip than we had planned.

The tour of Porvoo provided a great contrast to Helsinki. It’s a very picturesque village was brightly painted buildings and interesting shops. My tour guide Rachel was very knowledgeable and did a great job organizing the group.

Nice tour, though quite expensive. Porvoo is a small town with a few shops, museums, cafes and a church. Our guide gave lots of information about it and answered all of our questions. Would have been even better to have an extra hour in the town but a nice day out regardless.

Loved Porvoo! Super cute little town with restaurants and shops. Wish we had a bit more time to shop, but I am a shopper. We had about 1.5 hours for lunch and shopping. Our tour guides were very kind, knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommend!

You will travel from Helsinki to Porvoo (and back) on a regular Intercity bus. Guide will buy you tickets and will show you the seats. Guide will not comment or describe anything you see on the way. Then, the guide will show you briefly a few places around Porvoo, give very brief basic comments and let you walk around Porvoo for an hour or so. IMHO, you should save your money and do this trip yourself.

Peter, our guide was wonderful. He was on time and very friendly. He has a great knowledge about Porvoo and is passionate for Helsinki and Finland. It was good to go early as Porvoo gets very busy. We went to a fabulous bakery which served great coffee and food. A must do in Helsinki.

The meeting point was easy to find. Caesar our guide booked the public bus tickets and it took about an hour to travel to Porvoo. We took a walk around the old town which was very beautiful. We had some free time to look around and then headed back to the bus station. The walk was only minutes to catch the bus. The tour was very good and Porvoo is a beautiful quaint place. A little more time to look around would have been nice.

I was a bit skeptical when I saw we were taking public transportation, but once we got started, Harry made us very comfortable and we got underway. Porvoo has to be once of my favorite tours/destinations!! It was a beautiful medieval city with interesting architecture, beautiful views and cute little shops. I wish I had more time to explore. A must, though is the local chocolate shop where you can purchase yummy chocolate bars and truffles!

Great tour of Porvoo! Tour guide Daniela was very informative and engaging. The weather was perfect for all of the outdoor walking we did.

Its a long day, however the day is broken into small sections. Lola was a great guide and was very knowledgeable

Daniela who was my guide was very knowledgeable and patient enough to answer all my doubts about Finland.
The tour company was very kind enough to update me right from start to the end.
Highly recommended

Daniela was wonderful! The tour itself was great for those wanting to see Porvoo with limited time. She took care of the arrangements, was very considerate and knowledgeable. I would love to do this tour again!

Small group on an informative but relaxing tour in Porvoo. She also pointed us to many shops and restaurants to explore during our free time. Delightful day.

We were met at the Kampii Transit Terminal exactly at 9:30 am by a young man dressed in a long black leather trench coat, with wide leg jeans dragging on the ground and long black wet hair under a baseball cap, who introduced himself as Henry. We thought we were going on a 15 seat Viator private Passenger Bus - instead we were directed to the Public Bus entrance by Henry to go for a 40 minute public bus ride to Provoo. Our friends who had this same experience 2 days prior (we paid the same amount of money!) were picked up at their hotel by a guide, Darioush, who transported them personally in a car/van to the town of Provoo. During the ride their guide, Darioush talked of the history of the area and spent an hour talking about Provo once they arrived and was very entertaining per our friends.
Our guide, Henry, meanwhile got on the public bus and sat several rows back from the three of us and chatted with his 'trainee' the entire time.
Once in Porvoo, Henry did spend an hour talking with us about the history and guided us through the Castle Hill Park area, then showed us where we would meet in an hour.
We met up at the appointed time, he did offer to stay longer but the Monday we were there more than half the shops were closed as well as the Church, so without much to do in old town we where guided back toward the public bus pickup point.
Henry directed us onto a public bus to go back to Helsinki, this time he chose a local public bus which made Multiple Stops! Very frustrating experience taking 1.5 hours (vs. the 40 minute ride earlier) to get back to Helsinki on a public bus to the bus terminal - which is a 30 minute walk from our hotel! Especially knowing that our friends -just two days before- on the same excursion had been driven by car directly back from Provoo to their hotel.
We could have saved a $100 per person and taken the public bus ourselves and avoided the lengthy, frustrating public bus return trip. Wishing we could have had Darioush as our guide!
Hope the new trainee is able to spend time with Darioush!

Hi Steve, thank you for the detailed sharing, it's helpful for us to get a more clearer picture of the tour on 30th March. The tour you both and Rebecca booked was a bus tour, our customer service staff also reminded it when we sent meet up information to you that it's a tour by bus. Rebecca told us on 28th and 31st March your friends had a Porvoo tour by car. We didn't have bookings on those days, what they booked were different tours that operated by other tour operators and not from us. There are many tours to Porvoo available on Viator, some operators provide the tour with car ride. In our bus tour, the scheduled buses shall be express bus for both ways. We are sorry to hear the returning bus took more time. We have been investigating it with the lead guide on that day and bus company to understand if there's any factor unexpected on that day, thus the group had to take a bus that was different from the planned one. Thank you once again for the valuable feedback, wish you all the best. / Best Regards, Helsinki Tour

A public bus that cost 24 euro round trip as of the trip at 108 euro doesn’t make sense. A walk in a park and a couple of streets.
The guide did point out the shops we requested.
No ability for any narration along the way. Going we rode the express bus and coming back we stopped at least 20 times. Very subpar.
The town is very nice but not worth the time ir money
Response from Host, Apr 2026
Hi Rebecca, it's sad you didn't think it's worth it. Porvoo's medieval old town holds a unique place in Finnish history, boasting a rich cultural heritage. As our conversation via WhatsApp while you are on the bus to Porvoo, we cheked booking timetable and there were no bookings on days you mentioned by customer names provided, they booked different tours from different tour operators and not from us. Like what we shared with you, Viator is a channel for travellers to book tours, there can be plenty choices for tours to Porvoo. Your friend Steve who had the booking on the same day also shared same feedback. Buses for both ways shall be express bus, we are under an investigation with the lead guide and bus company to understand on 30th March if there's any unexpected factor or reason that made the group taking a different bus than the planned one. We appreciate your sharing, which helped us improve future tours, hope to see you again in Helsinki. / Best Regards, Helsinki Tour

Wonderful walking tour in Porvoo. We learned so much about Finnish history and culture from our guide Francisco. Free time for eating and shopping in old town of Porvoo shops was filled with great finds! Highly recommend.
Art_R, Feb 2026
Charming town. The tour involves walking on cobblestones; some uphill walking. We'll worth the effort.

Friendly and knowledgeable, Leticia provided us with a fun day out to a beautiful place to visit. Transport was via the public bus system departing from the city mall.
Tracy_O, Nov 2025
Porvoo is a charming and picturesque town, perfect for a relaxing visit. Its colorful wooden houses, cobblestone streets, and iconic red riverside warehouses make the Old Town especially beautiful. There are plenty of cozy cafés, small shops, and scenic corners to enjoy as you wander. Our guide, Darius, was very knowledgeable about the area, patiently explaining the town’s history and giving us plenty of time to explore on our own. Porvoo is a small town filled with character and heritage, and it’s definitely worth adding to your Finland itinerary.

Had a lovely morning in Porvoo, interesting commentary and friendly host, nothing was too much and the pace was leisurely.

Was a very nice tour with a great guide. Porvoo was beautiful and going into the shops was great for picking up gifts for people back home. Would highly recommend!
Chinta_S, Jul 2025
It was a very interesting historic tour. The old wooden houses and the new modern houses by the river was quite a contrast.
Karen_P, Jul 2025
Our guide Sergio was great about communications with us and gave us time to explore on our own. Porvoo is an amazing historic town.
Edward_O, Jul 2025
Our guide, Sergio, was excellent. He provided clear and informative commentary about Poorvo. We loved visiting the church, pastry and chocolate shops. It was nice to have free time to visit the shops on our own. We would recommend this tour highly!
Nancy_I, Jun 2025
Sergio made it a great experience. It is truly a great tour and you get to see Porvoo and it was just the right amount of time and able to see many different parts of it. Highly recommend!
