An interesting and visit to the old capital of Hoa Lu with a knowledgeable guide, and a peaceful ride on small boats of 2 passengers each down the river at Tam Coc, with a fun bicycle ride around a village after that. The road trips were in very nice and comfortable small buses. However the buffet lunch was not great.

We took this tour on Saturday, October 13th, 2018. The guide said we could call him Sam. He was a very charismatic, likeable young man with a lot of potential, but sadly, he was a terrible guide. He talked about his love life - which was okay as an introductory aside, but then told us nothing about the sights we were passing, the history of where we were going, or the amazing geography we were seeing. He failed to point out where toilets were located even when asked, and we paid to use a very dirty toilet about 5 minutes before arriving at the place where we had lunch that had large, clean, modern restrooms because we had no idea when or if another bathroom break would occur. What could have been a very nice day, was mostly boring and long because the guide was so inadequate. He slept on the way back to Hanoi, then dumped us out about 12 - 14 blocks from our hotel at the end of the day in spite of the tour description stating hotel pickup and return. The guide told us to ask the locals how to find our hotel. After 35 minutes of feeling lost and abandoned, thanks to the help of some policemen and a couple of street vendors, we finally found our hotel, but the fear and frustration of having to do so after an 11-hour tour was maddening. I have taken tours booked through Viator all over the world, and nearly all have been excellent, but this one was a disaster.
As other reviewers have stated, the food is not great, but there is plenty of it. The activities were okay, but would have been so much better if we had known what we were seeing and experiencing.

Fantastic tour of the ancient capital and the river ride through the three caves. Do get a photo taken by a photographer...its cheap. And don't forget to buy a Vietnamese cane hat

The restaurant and food choice was very mediocre and poor. For a luxury tour, it was very crowded.

The tour was good.
However we had booked the luxury tour...limousine bus and "better lunch" they said.
Well to put it bluntly lunch was pathetic, tasteless and poorly prepared.
The offerings on the cheaper buffet downstairs looked better!

Brilliant trip Sunny was our very knowledgeable guide. Shame the weather wasn't sunny but the rain stopped on our return boat trip at Tam Coc .Be aware as you will see from other reviews about tipping ,stand your ground with the food sellers but you might want to tip the person who rowed your boat.
The weather did not detract from the amazing scenery.

*They were an hour late picking me up.
*The tour really didn't start until after lunch (1:45pm)
*THE PICTURE THEY USED TO ADVERTISE THIS TOUR WAS NOT TAM COC! It was Ninh Binh. I only booked this tour to see that scenery, but it wasn't even part of the tour.
*Very boring tour and such a slow pace!

The limestone mountains and caves were beautiful, but the 1.5hr bumboat ride felt a little too long and the Hoa Lu temple tours weren't well managed or explained - you pretty much walk in and out in 5 minutes. The buffet spread at the restaurant was not great, either. In hindsight, we would have explored Ha Long Bay more, instead...

I had a thoroughly enjoyable day both visiting Vietnam,s first capital and during the boat trip in the afternoon. Travel in the bus was comfortable, lunch was enjoyable and the guides were informative. In my opinion the itinerary was well suited to the locations visited and the travel time to and from.

Another highlight of our trip! The driver and guide are prompt in collecting all the tourists from their hotels and the guide in particular was very informative and friendly. We travelled in a large group but it was a comfortable though long ride from Hanoi. The landscape along the way and ruins in Hoa Lu are truly beautiful. The buffet lunch at the restaurant in Tam Coc is lovely, and a nice break from being on the bus. It was followed by a 90 minute little canoe ride along the river through a series of caves - honestly one of the most picturesque and unique landscapes we've ever seen! Be prepared for a group of women selling drinks and snacks in the river who are linked to the drivers - you will most likely be pressured into purchasing something not for yourself but for your boat paddler! They will also ask for a tip upon arrival back in the bay. From here we were invited to take a self guided bicycle trip through the streets of the city which is a must do! If you are confident enough to veer off the main road you can end up in some beautiful private spots such as cemeteries and rice fields, but even reaching the outskirts of the city from the main road will bring you to some lovely sites. Definitely highly recommend this tour for some cultural experiences and amazing landscapes!

Une journée magnifique à ne pas rater. Nous avons eu un excellent guide qui nous a conduit jusqu'à Hoa Lu en nous racontant des histoires du Vietnam. Ensuite nous nous sommes balladés en bateau dans le paysage extraordinaire et magique de Tam Coc. Un bon déjeuner et promenade à vélo tout près de rizières. Tam Coc est touristique, c'est certain, il faut l'accepter ainsi que des vendeuses viennent te proposer certaines choses, mais finalement, elles ne dérangent pas tant que ça. Il faut se laisser aller et profiter de la super ballade. Je vous conseil ce tour. Une journée complètement différente à ce qu'on a l'habitude de faire et voir en Occident :-
