This was one area of France I've always wanted to visit, mainly because of the semi-wild gray horses who live here. Prior to arriving here, I spent a good deal of time looking into tours of the Camargue. They vary by length of time and what a customer will see. This particular tour appealed to me for a number of reasons. It touches on something I've been working on at home — creating habitat that benefits wildlife. The mode of transportation was an extended golf cart that was comfortable, easy to get in and out of and very quiet. The tour was limited to a small group of people. Our tour guide was part of the family that bought the property where the tour took place. He talked about their methods for building up wetlands for birds and was very knowledgeable about the different species of birds and other animals we saw. Our guide patiently answered questions and drove us all around the reserve. We stopped a lot and were able to see a lot of different kinds of birds, many more species than I saw in the rest of France. We had plenty of time at each stop to look around. Toward the end of the tour, he found some horses who were very friendly and enjoyed our attention. Tips: Take a water bottle and wear sunscreen and a hat. The tour company provides binoculars but it doesn't hurt to bring your own. It helps to be familiar with some of the types of birds that will be at the reserve.

We discovered a very beautiful nature reserve thanks to our guide Jonathan, who allowed us to identify numerous bird species. A tour that took us out of time because it was in total communion with nature. Thanks again to Jonathan, who shared his passion with us. We are already planning to do this tour again in another season.
